One double-page woodcut color printed hemispherical map of the world, and 43 (of 44 full) page color prints of people from all over the world - portrayed in somewhat fanciful native costume, largely in pairs, male and female. Each portrait has explanatory text on the facing page. Save the lack of title labels, collates identically with the Waseda University copy. (The one missing plate is of two American sailors). The fascinating and unusual Japanese view of the human race at the time of Perry's arrival. [Kerlen 422 for 1854 edition; KSSM II 41-3] Very good impressions and colors, nicely restored. In custom clasped chitsu folding case.

One dog-eared leaf; ink initials to one interior margin. Front hinge cracked, with rubbing and scuffing to boards which show wear to extremes and chips from head and tail of spine. About very good.

1809. [EHON] Suzuki Fuyô, artist. GAZU SUIFUYÔ 3 volumes. Edo, Bunka 6 [1809] 26.6 x 18.2 cm, string-bound, Japanese-style, fukuro-toji. Appears identical to the copy at Mitchell 264-5. There is a copy in the British Museum and a handful in Japan. Illustrated throughout in fresh sumi-e impressions of Nanga style interpretations of Chinese art by Fuyô (1749-1816) Interestingly, he was originally a teacher of Tani Bunchô and later became his student. In very good condition, original covers and title labels. De-accessioned from the Brookline Public Library with cover markings but no internal marks. Broken binding threads.
