Heel of spine is slightly soiled; light pressure mark to front pastedown and flyleaf with a bookstore sticker to the bottom of front flyleaf. Slight age-browning to pages, else fine internally, in a moderately edgeworn dust jacket.

A photo magazine illustrated in color and b+w, captioned extensively in Japanese throughout, with more substantial articles, as well. Interesting magazine for the home front on Japanese progress in the Asian war and on the war in Europe (The German invasion and defeat of France lasted 6 weeks in May and June of 1940) A bit worn externally, the covers are detached, but present - overall good condition. Very ephemeral and hence scarce.

A photo magazine illustrated in color and b+w, captioned extensively in Japanese throughout, with more substantial articles, as well. Important and interesting magazine for the home front on Japanese progress in the Asian war and the darkening situation in Europe (which would erupt into WWII within a month.) Combined with more gentle fare on baseball, sumo, mountaineering, etc. A bit worn externally, but overall very good condition. Very ephemeral and hence scarce.

String-bound Japanese-style, fukuro-toji, with original covers and printed title labels, 2 vols., complete. 18.2 X 25.2 cm. One double-page woodcut color printed hemispherical map of the world, and 43 (of 44 full) page color prints of people from all over the world - portrayed in somewhat fanciful native costume, largely in pairs, male and female. Each portrait has explanatory text on the facing page. Save the lack of title labels, collates identically with the Waseda University copy. (The one missing plate is of two American sailors). The fascinating and unusual Japanese view of the human race at the time of Perry's arrival. [Kerlen 422 for 1854 edition; KSSM II 41-3] Very good impressions and colors, nicely restored. In custom clasped chitsu folding case.

First edition, second printing, same month (Novemeber) as first edition, so stated on copyright page. 2 volumes. This is a fine set of books in dust jackets that are somewhat darkened and faded with publisherd notation "third printing" on spine. Housed in published box with split bottom seam. An unusual edition in jackets and slipcase.

1923. MOFFAT, ALEX W. THE GALLEY GUIDE. New York: The Motor Boat Publishing Company, 1923. First edition. 145 pp. 12mo, pale green glazed cloth with green cover lettering. Dedication copy of a much reprinted cookbook, inscribed by the author on the front flyleaf to "my revered captain T. S. Ross" in the year of publication. Edges foxed, spine slightly faded, rubbing to covers. Slight shelfwear to heel and crown. Menus, recipes, lists of supplies. "A purely humanitarian work, planned out of consideration for the digestive apparatus of those who cruise - the thing, after all, upon which success or failure largely depends.

A very good copy with some wear to extremities and spine ends and moderate soiling at the boards. Ink ownership on half-title. (BAL 11886).

This captivating book lists many chants and songs, as well as the rules of secret childhood languages such as "cat language." The rules are given for many other sports, such as baseball. Spine darkened, light rubbing and soiling, else very good.

Near fine collection of Kitasono's poetry. Excerpts from this "GLASS MOUSTACHE" collection were examined eloquently by John Solt in his work on Kitasono: SHREDDING THE TAPESTRY OF MEANING. Near fine copy, quite unusual.

It is sunned at spine and along perimeters; the backstrip is very nearly detached and chipped at the head. Scattered, very light foxing throughout the text leaves. A good reading copy which, because of the binding, is offered as is. (Howes P170, Sabin 59483).

Small 4to., quarter brown morocco with raised bands, gilt spine lettering, brown cloth boards stamped in blind. One inch pale stain to front cover. Spine worn at joints, heel and crown; moderate shelfwear to boards. Hinges tight, light foxing to title page only. Lacks map, else a very nice copy, clean plates.

Andover: Flagg and Gold, 1818. 8vo., full leather. Bookplate. Ink and pencil ownership to flyleaf. Some offsetting to text, with a stain to bottom edge that slightly affects lower margins of some preliminary and latter leaves, some very small stains to other book block edges and soil to top edge. One dog-eared leaf; ink initials to one interior margin. Front hinge cracked, with rubbing and scuffing to boards which show wear to extremes and chips from head and tail of spine. About very good.

1809. [EHON] Suzuki Fuyô, artist. GAZU SUIFUYÔ 3 volumes. Edo, Bunka 6 [1809] 26.6 x 18.2 cm, string-bound, Japanese-style, fukuro-toji. Appears identical to the copy at Mitchell 264-5. There is a copy in the British Museum and a handful in Japan. Illustrated throughout in fresh sumi-e impressions of Nanga style interpretations of Chinese art by Fuyô (1749-1816) Interestingly, he was originally a teacher of Tani Bunchô and later became his student. In very good condition, original covers and title labels. De-accessioned from the Brookline Public Library with cover markings but no internal marks. Broken binding threads.

Published in the third year of the reign of Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI, the same year in which he passed the "pragmatic sanction," whereby one of his daughters could inherit the crown. The author, Count Bernhard von Zech, was the Director of Protocol at the electoral conclave. A few pages toned; slight worming to end blanks; spot on title; else fine in vellum. Only two copies in OCLC.
