Description:
28 pp.Very rare first and only edition of a catalogue of military and other instruments, models of machines, plans, etc., that Faulhaber displayed in the "Kunstkammer" in his house in Ulm. Johann Faulhaber (1580-1635), taught mathematics at Ulm, where his family moved around 1461, after serving as vassals of the Abbot of Fulda. He became the most important of the "Cossists", mathematicians concerned with algebra. After publishing his first arithmetic text, Faulhaber founded his own school in Ulm in 1600, which grew into an internationally famous educational institute for higher mathematical sciences. He later added an artillery and engineering school. Descartes came to study with him, and Faulhaber had a lively contact with Kepler. Applying mathematics to military engineering, the building of fortifications and the art of fire-arms, Faulhaber was also much in demand as fortification engineer, receiving commissions from the King of Sweden and many others. He published a large number of mathematical…

Description:
8, [8], 288 [= 284], [16] pp. plus 2 folding ll.Rare first edition, in the original Latin, complete with the folding hierarchical tables (often lacking), of a comprehensive account of precious stones and their origin, cutting and tooling, use and properties, along with other stones and crystals, as well as things we would not now call stones, including coral, fossils and shells. "By far the most thorough and complete up to date, easily surpasses [all earlier works] in quantity and quality of information; ... further distinguished by its intimate knowledge of the art of the lapidary ... an impressive work by any standard" (Sinkankas). It is the first attempt to systematically describe minerals, "in many respects the most important lapidary of the seventeenth century and exerted a widespread influence" (Adams). The illustrations show equipment, the stones themselves (including several fossil teeth), and a few diagrams. Boodt was physician to the emperor Rudolph II in Prague and also acted as his…

Description:
[4], 16 pp.First edition of one the introductions to the newly planned work of the eccentric Scottish geographer Alexander Dalrymple (1737-1808), hydrographer for the East India Company and Captain Cook's leading rival. In 1783 he started to re-arrange his earlier plans, charts and views into a new format, without navigational information, for general sale as a geographical work. The present introduction concerns his nautical publications (mostly annotated ships logs and journals) and despite it being presented as a general geographical work this introduction mostly consists of technical remarks, primarily concerning his advocacy of Arnold's chronometers. Dalrymple had by then already published dozens of plans of ports and small-scale charts of parts of the East Indies and his reputation was based on these publications, whose spare style contrasted with the ornateness of commercial chart atlases. With a slip mounted on page 9, correcting a footnote. A small tear in the margins of one leaf and two…

[12], 112 pp.General description of India and in particular of the Kingdoms of Gujarat and Deccam, by the director of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in Northwest India: Johan van Twist. He was responsible for the Dutch activities in four cities of the Kingdom of Gujarat: Ahmedabad, Khambhat, Vadodara and Bharuch. The work covers topograpy, natural history, military force, the Royal court, politics, justice, religion and more. As can be expected from the viewpoint of the Dutch merchants the description is aimed chiefly in the profitable products that were available in the region, such as cotton, indigo. Included, with continuing pagination, is a work on sailing directions for the Indian Ocean. The work was part of Commelin's Begin ende voortgangh, van de Vereenighde Nederlantsche ... Oost-indische Compagnie (Amsterdam, 1645), from which the present work was extracted. Although the title-page refers to "Batavia, Druckerye vande Gansen Pen, 1638", Landwehr & V.d. Description:
[1], [1 blank], [2], 304 pp.First and only edition, in the original Danish, of an account of a journey through the Arabian peninsula. Sponsored by the Royal Danish Geographical Society, Barclay Raunkiaer (1889-1915) set out to penetrate the hitherto unexplored deserts of south-east Arabia. Although he came equipped with a modest amount of scientific instruments and a camera, the use of these became almost impossible. The Arabs looked on foreigners with suspicion and Raunkiaer could use his camera only with great risk at certain unwatched moments (p. 12). At the beginning of 1912, he reached the town of Kuwait, where he stayed at the palace of Sheikh Mubarak. Since it was Mubarak's policy to keep Kuwait free of foreign interference, it took some active lobbying of the British envoy to convince the Kuwaitis that Raunkiaer was a harmless traveller. After that, it seems he enjoyed a certain amount of freedom, as numerous photographs testify, including one of pearl fishers and a portrait of Sheikh…

The first volume includes an extensive disscussion of France, and the second of ancient Egypt and the Arabs in the Iberian Peninsula. He gives special attention to the Umayyad dynasty, especially the reigns of Abdullah (855-912) and Abd-ar-Rahman III (889-961).Some marginal stains and some pages somewhat thumbed. [69], [3 blank] pp.Rare second(?) edition (published in the same year as the first) of a Latin treatise on the geography of "Germany", interpreted very broadly to include the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland and some regions in eastern Europe, where "Germans" lived or had lived. The last three pages discuss recent Spanish discoveries in America (suggesting some may have been discovered by the Carthaginians but kept secret), including the island Hispaniola (noting the observation of an eclipse there in 1494, in fact by Columbus) off the continent that Pickheimer says the Spanish call "Sanctae Marthae". He also mentions Mexico, Temistitan (Mexico City) and not far from them the island[!] Yucatan and other newly discovered islands ("à qua etiam non longe remota est insula Iucatan cum aliis nuper repertus").The title-page is tattered and restored, very slightly affecting the right edge of the border, but otherwise in good condition and nearly untrimmed, preserving most point holes and some deckles. Description:
XII, 462 pp.First and only edition of a detailed and beautifully colour-illustrated study of Pompeii wall paintings by Augustus Mau, who "knew as much about Pompeii as any other scholar at the time and seems always to have been willing to share the latest information from new excavations with visiting scholars" (Pedley, p. 23). In the present book he established the classification scheme still often used today, distinguishing four different styles that he believed represented chronological phases, though this remains a point of dispute among archaeologists. Most importantly his stunning and richly-coloured chromolithographs and detailed collotypes show the wall paintings in situ and in the state they were found during the archaeological excavations. Besides their extraordinary beauty and their interest as examples of the scientific use of these reproduction techniques, they therefore also provide an extremely important record of the material, before attempts at restoration, the removal of items from…

Description:
39 pp.Dutch translation of an account of the Battle of Leipzig in October 1813 and the subsequent French retreat, attributed to the German dramatist and diplomat August von Kotzebue (1761-1819). Originally published anonymously as Der Rückzug der Franzosen nach der Schlacht bei Leipzig and possibly printed in Russia, the pamphlet was presented as a companion piece to an account of the French retreat from Russia in 1812 which was also translated and published by Maaskamp. With Amsterdam and most of the Netherlands abandoned by the French, the publisher Maaskamp (1769-1834) published numerous accounts of the recent events, listed on the inside of the wrapper, that had led to the French retreat all over Europe. The author of the pamphlet appears to have been a Saxon living in Leipzig as well as an enthusiastic German patriot, which seems to disqualify the attribution to Kotzebue, who was mostly pro-Russian and would ultimately be murdered for ridiculing German nationalism. Nevertheless, the author shares…

Description:
A large engraved wall print in two sheets showing the trading and commercial centre of the city of Leiden, at the convergence of the Oude Rijn and Nieuwe Rijn canals. Description:
XXII, 56 pp.Very rare first edition of the report of a mission to aid and bring order to the German Reformed congregations in Pennsylvania and neighbouring areas, prepared by Michael Schlatter at the request of the Holland Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church. King Charles II granted the Pennsylvania territory to the English Quaker William Penn in 1681 and German-speaking Quakers from the Palatine settled there already around 1685. Penn's strong advocacy of religious freedom encouraged numerous Germans of various faiths to follow, often collectively called "Pennsylvania Dutch" (a corruption of "Deutsch"): Mennonites and several related groups, Lutherans and especially German Reformed, not only in Pennsylvania but also in neighbouring parts. While many Quaker congregations had no designated preachers as a matter of principal, many Reformed congregations simply had no ordained preacher available, and the Dutch synod was particularly concerned about these "shepherdless congregations". Schlatter's report,…
