Our copy does not have a plate 39 or 40. Plate 39 is replaced by the titlepage of Album du Moyen Age.... and plate 40 shows the Cathedral of Strasbourg from the same album, numbered plate 40). Are there two plates lacking and replaced by two others? It seems there never was a plate 39. (see Bonacini 1182 but with date of c. 1840). (plates 22-33 browned).

1861. Paris, imprimerie de J. Claye, 1861. 48pp. 140 items described. Pink cloth binding (binding stained & some staining on the inside). From the introduction: "Le docteur Leroy (d'Étiolles), qui a conquis un nom illustre dans la science chirurgicale, restera aussi dans la liste traditionelle des collectionneurs de tableaux... Il y a plus de vingt ans que cette collection était commencée; mais ce fut seulement après la vente du cardinal Fesch qu'elle acquit une véritable importance. Plusieurs des chefs-d'oeuvre viennent de cette galerie célèbre, qui fut dispersée en 1845. Depuis le docteur ayant toujours continué à faire des achats, sans trop regarder au prix, sa collection se trouva monter à près de cinquante tableaux, au moment qu'il mourut, le 22 août 1860, agé de soixante-deux ans..."

1864. No place (London?), No date (1864/5). Broadsheet (23,5 x 33,5 cm). Printed on the recto only. Printed on thin paper. A good copy. In the Vienna Reichsrath on Feb. 13, a debate took place on the credit demanded by the Government to cover the Federal execution expenses. Cardinal Ruvscher and Count Hartip advocated the maintenance of the London Protocol. Count Rechsberg asserted that the credit already granted would suffice, as nothing more was to be apprehended in Schleswig from the enemy. The Lower House at its last sitting consented that 40,000,000 florins should be provided by loan toward the expenses of 1864. Drawings for the prizes took place several times a year and prizes could also be cashed at Frankfort, Paris, London, Dublin, Edinburgh or any other commercial place in Europe. The highest price obtainable was 220,000 Florins or 22,000 Pounds.

Printed title-page follwed by a engraved title-page, 12 unnumbered leaves containing text + 43 numbered copper engravings by Hondius on 36 plates. A lovely copy. A lovely copy of this classic and popular work on perspective by Hendrik Hondius the elder (1573 - 1650). It was first published in 1622. Our copy is the second edition from 1647. Hondius was an engraver, publisher and expert on fortifications. "The book provides a series of neatly conceived demonstrations on perspective in its abstract and applied forms and gives an original if brief analysis of the upwards convergence of tall verticals to a 'contre-poinct' when viewed with a plane tilted slightly towards the spectator" (Kemp, p. 112). Bigmore & Wyman say: "A reprint of a life of the inventor of printing, contributed to an encyclopaedic publication with which Lamartine was connected. It has no historical value, but treats the matter in a romantic style... Lamartine was born at Macon, Burgundy, October 21, 1790 and died at Paris, February 28, 1869. His name is popular and classical, not only in France, where for nearly thirty years he held the sceptre of poetry, and during four months the sceptre of power, but also throughout the world, for his works were translated into every language. His memoirs however, belong rather to the political history of France than to a technical work like the present..."

1893. No place, (Hamburg?), 1893. Folio (21,5 x 34,5 cm). 4pp. Inserted a leaflet "Application for Tickets". All printed on thin paper, damaged. Some handwritten notes on the last (blank) page. Extensive announcement of the 304th lottery to be held in Hamburg and published by The Chief Lottery Office of Isenthal & Co, Hamburg (established 1826) and for which tickets could be bought in all the major cities of Europe gives detailed information about the 55,400 prized that could be won.
