V&A Publishing, United Kingdom, 2016 Book. New. Hardcover. 1st Edition. English text; Hardcover (without dust jacket - as issued); 16.5 x 16.5 cm; 0.274 Kg; 64 pages.; STILL WRAPPED IN PLASTIC.; This exquisite gift book explores the phenomenon of 'garnitures', or matching sets of ceramic vases. From the 1650s such sets were used in elite European interiors as an integral part of the decorative scheme; displayed on chimney-pieces, cupboards, tables or over doors, they 'garnished' the interior and so enhanced the status of the owner. The fashion began in Europe using mismatched Chinese porcelain beakers and jars. As imports of Chinese porcelain ceased between 1657 and 1683, European potters at Nevers and Delft copied the originally exotic forms, unifying the sets with matching patterns, or with metal mounts. The fashion continued throughout the 1700s, with almost every ceramic manufactory producing examples, but came to its conclusion during the Arts and Crafts period, when the…

Also, light is shed on the availability of certain objects in the late nineteenth century, contemporary opinions and attributions to both the authorship and date of manufacture, as well as sense of the general level of knowledge held by Westerners about the Orient. The extensive holdings of mask netsuke alone afford one not only the opportunity to compare the nuances of the masks to one another, but also to their models, the…

Routledge, Oxon, 2016 Book. New. Soft cover. English text; Paperback; 16 x 23.5 cm; 0.480 Kg; 266 pages with 4 black-and-white illustrations; New book. May show signs of shelf wear.; The Global Lives of Things considers the ways in which 'things', ranging from commodities to works of art and precious materials, participated in the shaping of global connections in the period 1400-1800. By focusing on the material exchange between Asia, Europe, the Americas and Australia, this volume traces the movements of objects through human networks of commerce, colonialism and consumption. It argues that material objects mediated between the forces of global economic exchange and the constantly changing identities of individuals, as they were drawn into global circuits. It proposes a reconceptualization of early modern global history in the light of its material culture by asking the question: what can we learn about the early modern world by studying its objects? This exciting new collection draws…
