All edges gilt. A sound copy with secure hinges. Text is clean. tipped in color frontis. Illustrated throughout with black and white photos. SIgned on the half title by William Lanier Hunt. William Lanier Hunt (1906-1996) was the "Dean of Southern Horticulture." He donated land along the Morgan Creek in southern Orange County, NC to the North Carolina Botanical Garden and is now known as the Hunt Arboretum.

Early owner's inscription on the first issue's title reads, "Dr. G. C. Lippincott, U.S.N. / Salem, N. Jersey." George Coote Lippincott (1850-1951) was a doctor who was on active duty with the U.S. Navy in the 1870s-1880s. He was stationed at several naval bases and academies and spent a number of years at sea. In 1878 he was on board the U.S.S. Vandalia as surgeon in the Mediterranean when U.S. Grant and his wife were on board as part of their world tour.

Hardcovers bound in green cloth and with green printed dust jackets. The jackets show heavy wear and have several large edge tears, chips and creases. Jackets soiled from handling. The bindings of the book show moderate rubbing and wear. The edges of the text blocks are foxed, and there is foxing to the half titles and title pages. The text itself is generally clean. There is a gift inscription on the half title to Volume II which reads, "Charles H. Merryman / with every good wish for Christmas & the New Year / Florence Bratenahl / Christmas, 1934." Charles Merryman was a landscape architect in Bethesda, Maryland who was the grounds superintendent of the Washington Cathedral. He also managed the "Weathered Oak Herb Farm" in Bethesda with Florence Hall Bratenahl (1884-1940).
