Description:
London: Sayer & Bennett, 1787. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. 1st edition. Folio (16" X 22"), 23 maps on 35 double sheets, all hand colored in outline, with some areas fully colored. A milestone on the trail of progressively expanded versions, a lineage that evolved from Kitchin's single country atlases to the entire world starting in 1773 (the same year he was appointed royal hydrographer to King George III). It is meaningfully dated 1782 on the title page and decidedly distinguished by the earliest map of the nascent United States with its new borders, settled in 1782 and reconfirmed during the Jan. 1783 stage of the Peace of Paris (the treaty ending the American Revolutionary War, finally signed on Sep. 3, 1783). Contemporary boards, rebacked in calf, else near fine throughout, the finest of these we have seen, emitting all the elegance of differential calculus, and scarcer in this condition than reliable reports on where the tooth fairy gets all her money. RBH lists 2 complete copies… Read More

Description:
Washington DC: War Department, 1945. First Edition. Wrappers. Near fine. Stapled into the original printed wrappers as issued. Typed label, "Copy No. 5 Division V Lieut. R. S. Dunham." A pre-publication lithoprint (not to be confused with the later reprint or the later clothbound or paperbound Princeton edition), issued shortly (days) after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and not only an early copy (number 5 of about 1,000 printed), but a complete one— page VI-12 is found blank in most other copies (redacted), as it outlines plutonium production rates. And there's more. The original press release, a letter of commendation from the Army Corps of Engineers and an original shoulder patch awarded to about 3500 Army officers and enlisted men who were assigned to the Manhattan Engineer District of the Manhattan Project (Ref. Los Alamos Natl. Lab and Bradbury Museum). Copies of correct issue Smyth Report are scarce (regardless of how many copies are currently for sale), but scarcer still with a known and… Read More

Description:
New York: Day, 1931. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 1st edition, 1st printing with John Day's imprint on the copyright page, and "flees" on page 100, better yet, it's the 1st issue binding in pictorial wrappers (for advance distribution), and of the 50,000 copies of the 1st printing, only 1,000 or so (2%) were in wrappers, so it's 50 times rarer than the hardbound state for about 50% more money, demonstrating again that the bargains are still at the top of the market. And there's more. It's signed by Buck, in ink, on the half title. And it's a complete copy with the publisher's tipped in, fold out flyer announcing Book Club selection. And best of all, it's in fine condition (copies of this book are not seen in strictly fine condition), fresh, clean, and solid, and quite a fragile item, and a rare one when it's in the wrappers binding in such condition. From at least some perspective, the best copy in the world. Pearl Buck was born in West Virginia in 1892 but her missionary parents took her to… Read More
