Description:
Warsaw, Biblioteka Groszowa, [c. 1927]. 8vo, 2 volumes. Original cloth-backed boards, printed in orange and black, spines lettered in gilt; pp. 167; 175; only minor wear to bindings, contents browned as usual. Tadeusz Lucjan Gronowski (1894-1990) is the father of Polish poster design, responsible for the logo of the Polish airline Lot, still in use, worked between the wars on and off as interior designer for luxury shops in Paris, amongst them Galeries Lafayette, book designer and set designer for Warsaw Theatres. The present work is a rare survival, as the American novelist's work was published in a series of affordable books, mass-produced and not destined to survive for long.

1778. Glasgow. A Foulis. 1778. Royal 4to., in contemporary full mottled calf, boards with elaborate gilt panels with corner tools, rebacked preserving original rich gilt spine, contrasting red leather label, all edges gilt. Aquatint portrait frontispiece and 12 aquatint plates engraved by David Allan, pp.18 of engraved music at rear. Corners rubbed, a little light browning to margins of plates, neat ink name dated 1848, generally a very good crisp copy. "Ramsay’s play, The Gentle Shepherd first published in 1725, enjoyed massive success both in his lifetime and for several years after his death. This Scots pastoral drama is an entirely original creation, which develops the pastoral genre and fixes it within a Scottish context. Although the play belongs to the sentimental age, its value remains to this day: Ramsay presents his audience with skilful sections of lyric and song, and daringly attempts to revive the Scottish theatrical tradition under the strict codes of Calvinism. 1922. Boston: Four Seas Company, 1922. 8vo.; original cloth-backed boards with paper spine label; pp. 419; jacket heavily worn, with central tear and approximately a quarter lost; pages slightly yellowed, some unopened. First edition, fourth binding with less common patterned paper boards in tan, lavender, brown and gold. Geography and Plays is a collection of Gertrude Stein’s writing from about 1908 to 1920. Stein was born in America, but moved to Paris when she was 29. In her Parisian salon, the leading figures of modernism, including Picasso, Hemingway, Fitzgerald and Matisse, would meet. Her activities during World War II have been the subject of analysis and commentary. As a Jew living in Nazi-occupied France, she may have only been able to sustain her lifestyle as an art collector, and indeed to ensure her physical safety, through the protection of the powerful Vichy government official and Nazi collaborator Bernard Faÿ. Original green printed wrappers; pp. 353, [vii]; some light rubbing/ fading to spine, some very small stains and slight creasing to the corners of the wrapper; still a very good copy indeed. First edition, first impression, with the correct price of 1.500 Francs to the lower cover. Donleavy's first and most celebrated novel, printed by the Olympia Press in the same year that Nabokov's imfamous Lolita shared its publication. Like this counterpart, the novel was banned, both in Ireland and the United States of America by reason of obscenity. It was rejected by numerous publishers, until being accepted by the Olympia Press in 1955. The author was horrified to discover, however, that it had been published under its pornography imprint. In his later 1994 biography, Donleavy writes: "I smashed my fist upon its green cover format, published as it was in the pseudonymous and pornographic Traveller’s Companion… Read more
