1961. Crick, Francis Harry Compton (1916-2004) et al. General nature of the genetic code for proteins. In Nature 192 (1961): 1227-1232. 266 x 188 mm. Original printed wrappers, minor soiling and wear. Very good. The Haskell F. Norman copy. First Edition, journal issue. Crick and his team helped to crack the genetic code, amassing evidence suggesting that "the amino-acid sequence along the polypeptide chain of a protein is determined by the sequence of the bases along some particular part of the nucleic acid of the genetic material" (p. 1227), and that each acid was most likely coded by a group of three bases. Garrison-Morton.com 752.7. Norman 534 (this copy). .

No. 21 of 200 copies, signed by the translator at the foot of the colophon. Original two-color frontispiece etching by Michael Mazur, signed by the artist. 412 x 293 mm. Original purple handmade paper wrappers, cloth chemise and slipcase. Prospectus included. Mint copy. "Designed as a large folio, the Arion edition is a typographic monument that balances the Hebrew and English texts on facing pages . . . Robert Alter's translation of Genesis is an experiment in re-presenting the Bible--and, above all, biblical narrative prose--in a language that conveys with some precision the semantic nuances and the lively orchestration of literary effects of the Hebrew and at the same time has stylistic and rhythmic integrity as literary English" (Prospectus). .

First Separate Edition. Garrison-Morton 2526.1. In the late 1940s Luria discovered "the production of active phage particles when many inactivated phages were allowed to infect bacteria. He called this multiplicity reactivation and he explained it in terms of the existence of a 'gene pool' formed by the independent replication of discrete genetic units, from which active phage particles were assembled. The infecting phage was assumed to break up into such units once it entered the host cell. The inactivity of ultraviolet irradiated phage was attributed to the damage to one or several of these units. Damaged units of one type,… Read More
