An apparently unread, fine copy, in a fine looking unused dw that has been expertly tape-repaired to rear panel, housed in red, crushed morocco leatehr box with raised bands, gilt title and author. Leather spine darkened. With a ANS addressed by Erskine laid-in to William Brown Meloney (1878-1925), journalist, writer, executive secretary to Mayor William Jay Gaynor of New York City and a historian of shipping.

As the essays are based on lectures previously published we expect this is the first appearance in book form. An apparently unread copy in better than very good dustjacket.

Uncommon first edition of 1732. 8vo, xvi + 252 + 4p publishers' listings, frontispiece engraved by Pine, contemporary speckled panelled calf with rules and ornaments in blind, gilt dentelles and cover edges. Front cover hinge partially revealed, loosening, covers soiled, but a nice, unsophisticated copy. Miller's Gardener's Dictionary went through eight editions in his lifetime, and it is said that before its appearance not more than 1000 species of plants were in cultivation. At Miller's death there were more than 5000. Miller accepted the introduction of the Linnean system of nomenclature in 1759. The Gardener's Kalendar reached a 15th edition in 1769, and was also published on the Continent.

Love & Peace Kay Ballard" Between two lines of the inscription, Ballard has sketched a musical scale and within her signature Kay has sketched a self-caricature. Jane and Bob Emerson managed the Drama Book Shop, the go-to bookstore in Manhattan for theatre professionals and aficionados. Unclipped dustjacket lightly soiled, more so to spine and rear panel.

We can speculate that Marshall might be Marshall Brickman, accomplished screenwriter (Oscar for "Annie Hall") and playwright (Tony Award for the book of "The Jersey Boys") who, born in 1939, would have been a NY theatre contemporary of Sackler (1929 - 1989). Book near fine except for a dusty top edge, apparently unread (no bookplates, etc) in unclipped dustjacket with modest surface wear at corners and spine tips. Distinctively, on the copyright page, this first edition copy has a pasted-in copyright statement, which was apparently neglected in some first printings of the first edition, but no issue point has been established that we are aware of.
