Description:
Chicago. NA. Good. Scarce, with no catalogues from the company coming up on OCLC First Search. N.d., circa 1920. 4to. 22 by 14.5 cm. 64 pp., including cover. H.C. Evans was founded in 1892 and became a top manufacturer of casino equipment, supplies and furnishings. The company sold both honest and crooked equipment, the latter including such things as special dice, special card decks and the like. The company also got into jukeboxes, pinball machines, etc. The company folded in 1955 but pieces of its business continued afterwards for a short time. This catalogue includes various elaborate carnival games such as Walking Charley or Kelly Ball Game, an Auto Speedway, shooting galleries -- all these large installations not practicable in the typical home -- various portable race track games, Mrs. O'Leary's Wash Tub, a pop it in bucket, a geographical flasher and illuminated counter, etc. etc. The variety of such games on offer is immense. Also promoted is a wide variety of roulette wheels and…

Description:
Paris: Imprimerie Jules Boyer, 1875. Hardcover. Paper pastedown. Cloth spine. Very Good Plus. Scarce album of designs for kiosks, chalets and small villas -- lovely pleasure pavilions and follies, many can be. No copies whatsoever found on OCLC or elsewhere. Folio, 35 by 27 cm. Secondary title page (front cover serves as the primary title page), followed by 30 plates, each with a single design. Each plate is dominated by an elevation of the design, below which is a ruled scale and a simple architectural design outline -- as most of these are single room, this amounts to a geometric shape and little more in those instances. Quite extraordinary architectural "trade catalogue" -- besides being scarce in itself, it is a type of catalogue that was also uncommon at the date of its issue. Light wear.

Paris: François Bernouard. Typography: Sam. Cohen, July 14, 1925. Hardcover. Buckram. . Near Fine. No. 729 of 1,786 copies. 4to. 28 by 19.5 cm. Unpaginated, 156 pages. Four color plates. Original wraps bound in. A beautiful French Haggadah, printed on better paper, and surprisingly uncommon in commerce -- we could find no copies in commerce on the date of this listing, but no shortage of institutionally-owned copied listed on OCLC. Text is presented in both French and Hebrew. The artwork has the quality of Folk Art and perhaps a Modernist Primitivist influence. Wrap cover withcorner repairs, and light soiling, much of which can be erased, and some stains which can't be erased. Scattered stains on other leaves, but mostly clean.

Description:
Hamburg. Cloth Folder. Good. A collection of beauties mostly in exotic dress, with beads, chains, headresses, veils and other jewelry that one might have expected to find in an Ottoman harem a fairly common element. N.d., circa 1880. While the ladies may not today all be shoo-ins as super-models, one can see that they generally conformed to mid to late Victorian conceptions of feminine beauty, and given their youth and theatrical dress, one can comfortably conjecture that they were actresses and/or starlets of the Hamburg stage of the day. The photographs are each about 16 by 10 cm, or 6.5 by 4 inches. They are pasted onto a canvas backing, and the whole thing folds up like a map to fit into the red cloth folder/binding. This is decorated in the neo-Renaissance style then in vogue in the Teutonic world and beyond. The canvas and the binding are heavily soiled, and the cloth on the spine is somewhat thin. Closed, the binding holds together loosely, not unlike many a map. Regardless, an…

Description:
Paris: Basan, 1740. First Edition. NA. Good. Beautiful panoramic view of formal gardens, the chateau which belonged to the Duc Conde, with a good amount of human activity -- aristocrats strolling, gardeners, etc. -- and a dog, to add some interest and provide a sense of scale. The chateau still stands. Exposed part of print: 26 by 48 cm. With matting, 36 by 59 cm. The hand-coloring greatly enhances the visual appeal of this print which is most often encountered in black and white. A band of black has been painted around the perimeter. We can't explain why this was done. The caption below is also obscured by the uneven application of black paint, although much of it remains legible. The core pictorial image isn't significantly afflicted by this blacking, although it does invade a bottom edge here and there. Much of the unwanted black can be removed with an ordinary eraser, and we suspect that virtually all of it can be cleaned up with a professional acid bath.

Wraps. Very Good. Man lives not by bread alone. But a little bread -- or a lot of bread -- isn't so bad to think about now and then. 15 by 8 cm. 24 pp. plus wraps. A how-to-do-it-yourself on evangelism, tied to a campaign meant to suggest a sweepstakes of $100,000,although this would seem to be a little false advertising or a deliberately misleading pitch, since no where are dollars actually mentioned. But what means are justified when the ends are divine? The booklet is full of practical information such as baptism requirements, and an abundance of handy biblical citations.

Description:
London: B. Feldman & Co.. NA. Very Good. N.d., circa 1915. A 48 cm square, made with a sheer silk, with lettering and flags in the centerpiece (as opposed to the border) embroidered in, while illustrations along border are not so -- simply color silk thread was used for these. With a distinctive map of the Middle East -- Ottoman territory -- as a centerpiece. The border is decorated with the flags of the Entente members, which included Japan and other lesser players in the Great War -- and pyramid vignettes enliven the corners. The hankie deserves to be framed and hung on a wall for display. The silk hankie is presumed a scarce survivor. With some light soiling, but overall, very attractive. We presume that the soiling will come out with a sensitive cleaning, but we haven't tested this.

Blindstamped Full Morocco. Very Good. With inscription from 1856. 35 by 23 cm. Black leather blindstamped and gilt ornamented with typical designs of period. Pockets within for Letters Answered, Unanswered and Notes & Addresses and loosely attached notebook of leaves still entirely blank. The front cover also is backed with a pocket bearing no caption, and this, closed, served as a writing surface. Many separate sheets with tracing of various ornament and occasional written notes dating back to the 19th century and probably done by the original owner of the folio. The folio closed with a flap that folds over the front and has a clasp which is still usable but doesn't lock -- there is no surviving key. Considerable wear and rubbing to the leather, but overall still attractive.

Description:
December 24, 1984. Very Good. The note, on Lillian Gish's personal stationary, reads, "Dear Jim and Steve: Here is the money for your new table. Hope it turns out to be just what you want and need. With much love at Christmas, and every day of 1985, and always. Yours grateful, Lillian." The letter was to James Frasher and his boyfriend. Frasher was Gish's manager and confidante. As a young man he had appeared in a few Western movies, most notably, as a supporting player to Gene Autry. Gish of course was one of the most illustrious of movie stars of the Silent Era, starring in "The Birth of a Nation", in 1915. With the advent of sound, she concentrated more on theater, but occasionally returned to the screen, most notably, in "Duel in the Sun", 1946, and "The Night of the Hunter", 1955. Her swan song, "The Whales of August", was released in 1987, over seventy years after her first appearance in movies. The second item on offer is a mounted photo of a middle aged Gish, with her writing…

Description:
Fine. A folded Christmas card, custom made for Coward, measuring 15 by 10 cm. The front of the card features a witty photo of the mature, regal Coward on a thrown of sorts with a wall hanging behind creating the impression that he has wings attached at his side. Inside, on the verso, Coward writes in blue ink, "Just to let you know I'm still thinking of you. Love Tangerine )'. Dialogue -- Me --"Why are you wearing those wings God?" God -- "Because they amuse me!" On the recto, beneath a red printed "Heureux Noel", Coward signs "Love Noel", in his swoosh illegible signature. The card was sent to James Frasher, we believe, who played supporting roles in several Westerns, and worked repeatedly with Gene Autry, in the early fifties. He later became the manager for Lillian Gish. Photo credited to Tappe, Vevey.

Description:
Prague: Artia, 1969. Decorated cloth. Very Good. Pop-up book with eight pop-ups in all, plus a pull or movable tab on the front cover. Oblong, 10 by 8 inches, or 26 by 21 cm. Kubasta illustrated pop-ups capture the charm and spirit of the classic fairy tale. Kubasta also pulled off a stylish mid-twentieth century look, streamlined and all splashy colored, while honoring more traditional aspects of fairy tale renderings, a feat that many of his contemporaries failed to achieve. Thus this appealed to children, who are notoriously conservative in their literary and artistic tastes, as well as the grown children who presented the book to the former group. All the mechanics of this copy function smoothly, and there are no losses. The cloth backstrip has some soilage, and there is some edgewear and and minor crease on the front board. Overall, a VG copy.
