Description:
Washington: U S Department of Agriculture, 1893 A good copy of the 1st edition in the original cloth binding with 26 coloured plates. The binding is sound and bright with gilt titles to spine and textured cloth boards. There is some pulling to spine ends and light wear to corners. The back board has 4 tiny spot marks and a slightly paler area at the top close to the spine. The contents are complete with 26 coloured plates as per the plate listing (which places plate 26 before plates 24 and 25). The text paper and endpapers are lightly toned and there is some spotting to the foredge which is occasionally visible internally at the page edge - including plate pages. The plates are tissue-guarded - the guard to plate 9 has small loss from a side edge. There is small stain at the bottom gutter edge which is visible at the rear endpapers and on plates 1, 24 and 25. This does not affect the images. A sliver of text surface from p 96 has attached itself to the back of plate 14 - this affects some words but it… Read More

Complete sets are the exception! This set is in contemporary half leather bindings with marbled boards. The spines have gilt lining and title and volume labels. Description:
Paris: Marc Orry, 1600 A good copy of the 2nd French edition of Joseph Acosta's important work on the New World first published in Spanish in 1590. Acosta was a Jesuit, who spent 17 years in South America and Mexico. His work, based on careful observation, formed one of the first accounts of the New World. This copy is in probably contemporary full vellum binding with yapp edges. The original ties have gone. It is difficult to say if the binding was hard or soft cover, because at some point in its history, it has had an old stiff embossed wallpaper with gilt birds and flowers, used to form new endpapers. There are no pages before the title page, which has had a strip added at the bottom and which is coming loose. Contents: title page; dedication pp ii-iv; advert; poems 4pp; Extrait du Privilege du Roi 1p; Text in 7 books pp 1-375; table of contents 34 pp. The text pages are numbered on the recto only. With decorative head pieces and initial capitals. The text is very clean with just the occasional… Read More

Description:
Paris: Chez De Hansy le jeune, 1774 A very good copy in newer full morocco binding with fold out map by Robert de Vaugondy. M. de Freville was a teacher, who wrote a variety of works, including for children. This book is notable in that it gives one of the first accounts in French of Cook's 1st voyage in the Endeavour, 1768-71. The bindings have raised bands and gilt titles and dates to spines. They are in near fine condition. The endpapers are marbled in a near match for the original marbling on the page edges. New blanks have been inserted at front and rear. Vol I: half title (giving the alternative 'Hydrographie...as the title); title page with 2 ink signatures across the lower half (the ink is visible to verso); Preface v-xlviii; fold out map; text with decorative headpiece and tailpieces pp 1-518; Index 519-522; errata. Description:
Bruxelles: Johannis Mommartius, 1656 A good copy of the second edition of this extremely rare work. First printed in Venice in 1652. Baldassare Bonifacio was a professor among many other talents and this work is a cabinet of curiosities - gathering a wide range of stories and recollections - including tales from classical antiquity of women who had serpent lovers. In full leather binding with raised bands and gilt decoration to the spine and tooling to the boards. It has had an old leather repair relaying the tooled front board onto plain leather. It is clean, showing wear to top and bottom of spine and edges and with a broken front hinge and weak rear hinge, although the board is still attached. The contents are in superb condition given the age of the book. There is a biographical note written in ink in english on a preliminary and 2-3 signs of previous ownershiip. Some of the ink has run a little. With black and white illustrated title page; page of names - D Carolo Hovyne, Equiti Aurato;… Read More

Description:
Edinburgh: Printed by J and W Paterson, 1848 A very good copy of this extremely scarce work on Orkney fauna. William Balfour Baikie was born in Orkney, and obtained a degree in medicine in Edinburgh. He became an assistant surgeon in the Royal Navy and went on to become a well known explorer. This work, published just as he started his career in the navy, was designed to fill a large gap in naturalists' knowledge of Orkney fauna, and he hoped that others would use it as a basis for further exploration. This copy is in a newer full leather binding with gilt titles to spine. There is the bookplate of John Davie Manson Robertson (a well known Orkney book collector) to the front pastedown endpaper and both endpapers date from the rebinding. The contents are complete and very clean with light toning to paper and the occasional small mark.

Description:
Amsterdam: Joannem Jacobi fil. Schipper, 1657 A fair copy of the extremely scarce Insectis section of Jan Jonston's famous work Historiae Naturalis. Jonston (1603-1675) studied botany and medicine and was a doctor. This copy is classed as 'fair' because it has been rebound in plain buckram binding without the title page, and the paper is very soft and lightly stained to the bottom outer corner margin. Contents are otherwise complete with 28 full page plates. The binding is clean and sound with gilt titles to spine. Contents: new endpapers; dedication 1p; Preface with plate list 3pp; Referenda ad pagninam 2pp with Plate I; text liber I pp 1-84; liber II 85-128; liber III 129-138; liber IV 139-147 with 27 further plates placed with relevant text; index 1p. Interestingly the final section includes starfish and seahorses. The contents are in very good clean condition apart from the paper damage mentioned above which has resulted in crumbling to the bottom corner of the dedication and preface leaf.

Description:
London: Matthew Walbancke. Matthew Walbancke, and Henry Twyford, 1672 A very good copy in largely contemporary binding. In two parts with separate title pages dated 1647 and 1651 respectively. It is suggested that John Selden (1584-1654) is the true author of the work, which was then edited by Nathaniel Bacon - whose name is on the title to the Continuation. However, this is still a matter of argument. The work was produced originally as the Civil War came to its close and the Commonwealth was established and is written against the royal prerogative. A 'secret' or 'private' edition was produced in 1672 after the restoration of the monarchy. It is stated that 750 copies were produced and many were burnt or otherwise destroyed. The edition has the 2 works in one, is dated as for the 1647/51 edition and there are variants of it. Detailed study (Joseph A Dane, University of Chicago Press) suggests that the remnants of 1672 copies were put back together and sections reprinted later. This copy is clearly a… Read More

Description:
London : W. Nicoll, 1769 A good copy of a very scarce work, originally issued as part of a two volume work called 'The City Remembrancer'. This consisted of 3 books, with separate title pages and pagination, on the Great Plague, Fire and Storm of London. The title page for the 'Remembrancer' states that the source material for the work is Dr Gideon Harvey's papers. Dr Harvey ?1640-?1700 became the king's 'Physician to the Tower'. He is known for a variety of medical works (and for using his writing to discredit other physicians). This copy has been rebound by Bath Municipal Reference Library, and is in a near fine buckram cloth binding with gilt title, reference number and date to spine. The internal endpaper joints are reinforced and there is the armorial library bookplate to the fep, together with some reference numbers at the top. There are no other library markings.
