The adverts on the verso of the last leaf are for other books by Nelson, including The Use of Human Reason in Religion in Answer to the Methodists, published in 1741, suggesting that this leaf has been reset. ESTC T138951 records three copies of this first edition: BL, Bodleian, Newcastle Central. A later edition with a cancel title-page removes Ross as author, published in 1738 (Bodleian [2]), UCLA.

A very good copy. Smith (1689 - 1768) trained as a mathematician and was Plumian Professor of Astronomy at Cambridge for forty-four years (1716 - 1760). Although his work on harmonics has a mathematical basis, he approaches the problems of tuning keyboard instruments as a musician would. A total of nine volumes of glees was published over several years, and this volume comprises the first four volumes. The present of the index for the four volumes suggests that it was issued in this form.

Large 8vo, 212 x 135 mms., pp. vi, [20], 311 [312 note], title-page in red and black, engraved frontispiece, uncut, late 18th century calf, sympathetically rebacked, morocco label; a very good copy with the inscription "Jas. Bonar/ 1791" on the top margin of the title-page, and the 20th century bookplate of Ray Livingstone Murphy on the front paste-down end-paper. Voltaire dedicated this long poem on the life of the French King, Henri IV to Queen Caroline, and it was published in French in 1728. It was translated into English by John Lockman (1698 - 1771), and this apparently earned him the sobriquet "l'illustre Lockman" in France, a fact that Dr. Johnson, according to Boswell, found irritating and ridiculous. The translation, in blank verse, is accompanied by a large number of notes, almost all of an anti-Catholic hue. Foxon L 215.

Amstelodami, Apud Jodocum Jansonium, 1648. 8vo, 160 x 105 mms., pp. [xvi], 526, engraved printer's device on title-page, contemporary vellum (very slightly worn). A very good copy. Smetius (1535 - 1614) published this very popular anthology of Latin quotations and their authors as a kind of students' dictionary of phrases that could be quickly traced to a classical author.

London: Printed for Charles Dilly, 1798,. 4 volumes. 12mo, 173 x 92 mms., pp. [vliii], 316; m[iv], 328; v [vi blank], 311 [312 blank]; [vi blank], 304, with frontispieces engraved by Heath, Sparrow, or Saunders after Edward Francis Burney (1760–1848; Fanny Burney's cousin) in each volume, and, remarkably, extra-illustrated with seven pen and ink watercolours, executed in the same style as the frontispieces; contemporary calf, spines richly gilt, black leather labels; tops and bases of spines slightly chipped, some wear to joints with the front joint to volume 1 being slightly vulnerable, corners worn, but for the most part a very good set. The coloured images seem to me not dissimilar to the style of Thomas Stothard, but it seems more likely that they derive from drawings or paintings by Burney. � The playwright and novelist Richard Cumberland (1732–1811) was the author of the very popular novel, Arundel, first published in 1789 and frequently reprinted. Brian Hill (1755 or 1756 - 1831) published this first in, probably, 1786, though it was written in 1783. This edition is considerably expanded from editions published in 1786, which consisted of 44 pages of text and no illustrations.

FIRST EDITION. 4to, pp. xi [xii "Avertissement"], 189 [190 "Approbation," 191 - 192 "Privilege du Roi"], 68 engraved plates, including frontispiece which is supplied in facsimile, contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments, morocco label; lower corner of first four leaves water-stained, and slightly frayed, joints and corners neatly restored. Blainville (1710 - 1777) maintained that he had discovered a third mode of music between major and minor, which he called "mode mixte"; his symphony in this mode was first performed on 30 May 1751, and Rousseau commented favourably upon it. The final section in this work is on harmonic theory.
