At the very top of VERY GOOD grade and some might grade it near-fine, but it has a corner bump and tiny color rubs on the other corners and top/bottom of spine. Name on blank fep. 36 plates in perfect condition, each being full-page black and white. At back is a fold-out Ordnance Map in perfect condition. Tight and bright for age. From 12th Century onward.

Maroon cloth gilt title front and spine eight plates by Phiz and preface "Life and Works of Henry Fielding." This edition is not listed anywhere I can find. It has eight illustrations by PHIZ. It has no date BUT was printed by Woodfall and Kinder of London. Prelims ii-xv1 are Life and Works of Henry Fielding." Prelims xvii to xx1v are contents Then 614 text pages and one leaf/2 pages of adverts. After listing some books, The adverts include: "To be followed by" and lists Pottleton Legacy-which was first published in 1854 and Ovingdean Grange which was first published 1860. In fact all the books listed are of the 1850s. That suggests this copy is from before 1854.

Recorders of Ripon Abbots of Fountains Abbey Appendices and Errata. Looks like quarter leather, but I cannot be sure; see scan. Ribbed spine extensively rubbed; see scan. Brodart strengthener joining front board. Foxing, of course.. Scan shows spine, front, back, long edge, and title page. I give an overall grade of fair because of the binding and the way the page edges are wrinkled (see scan) but please note the inside is very good for a 200-year-old book. No writing.

XVI prelims plus 276 pp plus xii prelims . 3 plates (2 are pullout). Marbled end pages and page edges in beautiful condition. Tight. Solid. A beauty with most pages looking almost like new with toning and others with heavy foxing presumably caused by acid paper. At top of spine, over length of 1.24 inches the leather is missing. 3 plates, of which two are fold-outs. Book is NEW and opens as if it has never been read, but I have read it and on title/frontis have left a very faint very tiny 2-pinhead-size spot of color. Book presents as fine binding with fine detail on front and spine. Cromwell and Charles. Highly readable with maps, portraits, sketches. 469 pages. Decorated end pages.

Book is indistinguishable from new, no bumps no writing. DJ is very good plus with quarter-1 inch split at top foldover. Shadow is from scanner, not the book. Gilbert throws light on the anachronism of the U.S. decision to help the French keep control of their S.E. Asia colony, discussion (1954) of dropping atomic bombs on Vietminh positions. The logic of Britain attacking Egypt and the Canal Crisis of 1956 in which Britain and France (Eden and Moller) connived with Israel and the UK opposition party (Gaitskill) denouncing military attack. The Soviets (Kruschev) taking the opportunity to move into Hungary. And so it goes on with revelations of the secret political manoeuvring of the western nations. As always, his writing s superb.
