Connecticut/California, 1940's-1960's. Cards. Decorated covers, green yarn binding. Good. 21 pages. 25.5 x 17.5 cm. Handcrafted recipes book made up of decorated envelopes. Each envelope is decorated with pasted-on photos of food items which are labeled, and filled with recipes. Both handwritten recipes and recipes cut from magazine, periodicals, and food packaging. Some envelopes empty. Front cover decorated with a photo of a 1950's dining room. Laid in: a page from The Lassez-Faire, what appears to be a mock newspaper for humorous purposes; a pink tissue paper party hat; a black and white photo of a house circa 1940's, and an invitation to a wedding - Nancy Jane Franklin (Hopper). Recipes from both California periodicals and Connecticut periodicals. One envelope is detached.

Seattle, 1968-70. Hardcover. Green felt covered boards, maroon cloth spine. Good. 96 pages. 21 x 17 cm. Composition book used for grocery lists from February 1968 to march 1970. Very legible handwriting, in cursive. Interesting look into the buying habits of an American household in the late 1960's. The household ate a fairly repetitive diet that included: Folger's Drip Coffee, Pepperidge Farm White Bread, Carnation Instant Breakfast Drink, Grapenuts, Club soda, Juice Oranges, Tree Top Apple Juice, Grape Juice, Uncle Ben's Rice, and carton's of Philip Morris Regular cigarettes. These items were rounded out by bacon, lamb, top round, pork chops, and other meat purchases. There are over 20 receipts from Village Foods Grocery Dept., loose grocery lists laid-in, and a couple of cut-out recipes. A fun acquisition for those interested in personal accounts of diet from the near past. Binding loose, with a couple of pages torn out. Leaves are toned and boards rubbed, with a 1" rip in the center of spine.

Filled with practical chapters on how to make an herb garden, the history and lore of herbs, each herbs properties and medicinal values, recipes for wine, jam, ketchups, syrups, cordials, teas, perfumes, and sauces. Illustrated throughout with black and white photos. Interior pages lightly toned, with a couple of pencil marks. Boards rubbed.

New Kensington, PA: The Aluminum Cooking Utensil Company, c. 1937. Staplebound. Silver illustrated wraps. Very good. 11 pages. Advertising booklet features care tips for the “Wear-Ever” branded aluminum cookware, as well as recipes using the same. Includes cooking charts for various fruits and vegetables with preparation instructions and cook times. Margaret Mitchell (pictured in pamphlet), director of the test kitchen at Wear-Ever Cooking Utensil Company worked to develop utensils suitable for the electric range. Homemakers were troubled by their electric bills after installing their new electric ranges - Mitchell studied the sizes, shapes, and capacities of the utensils being used in households and deduced from her investigation that utensils for electric ranges should have straight sides and perfectly flat bottoms. Illustrated throughout featuring vivid silver colored paper. Covers lightly rubbed, and lightly folded.

This charming periodical features six sheets of cooking instructions detailing: Fish-Soup; Meat; Sauces-salads; Vegetables; Pastry; Sweets and Preserves; and How to Make Bread. The binding style and large type set likely indicates that this publication was meant for display in the kitchen. The inside cover purports the benefits of a healthy diet, especially focused on wheat and grain's positive effects on the brain. The following pages outline recipes and instructions for proper food preparation, taking care to mention the repercussions of poorly tended food (ranging from indigestion from unchopped capers to dangers of under or overcooked vegetables). Early in her career, Miss Post had a bunch of fun, writing humorous essays and books on various topics such as travel, business, and of course Etiquette. This entertaining book features the fictitious debutante "Muriel" who spends her day navigating the trials and tribulations of life as a debutante. To add to the amusement, the book features one of the best-known illustrators of the jazz-age, John Held Jr. Laid in - most of the scarce dust wrapper, minus the back cover.
