[Habana (Havana, Cuba): Imp. El Score, Luz 45, 1930]. [4]pp. Program. Approx. 9 x 6 inches. Bifolium. Text in English and Spanish. Brief pencil annotation on verso. Folds; minor handling; very good. Official program for the "Habana-Madrid" frontón or jai-alai venue in Havana, Cuba. The Basque/Spanish sport of jai-alai, played extremely fast with a small ball, was popular among gamblers. This program for the evening of March 6, 1930 list five games to be played that night including doubles (partidos) and elimination (quinielas) matches. The leading players and their uniform "colors" are noted, no doubt to assist the following of the fast game-play and to keep track of one's gambling. Admission prices are noted for premium, court side, bleacher, and stand-only admissions. Reserved seating for tourists was also available. English-language texts explain the game, the rules of scoring as well as how to bet on the "pari-mutual" (parimutuel) system for both doubles and elimination singles matches.

Spine partially cocked, vertical strip of old paper residue to upper cover, light foxing to endpapers; else very good and clean. Civil rights reformer, Mary White Ovington, caucasian, was a founder of the N.A.A.C.P. "Ovington began in 1904 a study of black Manhattan. Focusing particularly on housing and employment problems, her work resulted in 1911 in publication of Half a Man. The Status of the Negro in New York. In the course of her research, Ovington met New York's black leaders, learned from them about community problems, began a correspondence with black scholar W.E.B. Du Bois, tried unsuccessfully to establish a settlement house for blacks, and lived for a time as the only white in a black tenement." (NAW, Modern Period, p517)

Description:
[Daytona, 1898]. Photograph on card mount with scalloped edges and ribbon hanger. 7 x 5 inches. Image lightened; faint rubbing in margins; very good. Rare. Invitation to cards and dancing on March 11, 1896 at the Opera House in Daytona, Florida, one of the first events sponsored by the Halifax River Yacht Club. The yacht club's first meeting was held just two months earlier, its organizers eager racers of gaff-rigged catboats. The invitation itself is a photograph. The image incorporates a scene of sailboats racing on the Halifax River and a photo-reproduction of the handwritten invitation. Right around the time of the dance, "Laurence Thompson, a founding father of Daytona and one of the original 13 members, gave permission to construct a wharf from his premises on Beach Street, including the 'riparian rights'." (History of the Halifax River Yacht Club, accessed online) The Halifax River Yacht Club is believed to be the oldest yacht club on the East Coast still at its original location.

Albany pamphlet issued as a newspaper "Extra" of the Albany Atlas, publishing the anti-slavery proceedings of the 1847 Democratic State Convention at Herkimer, New York. The convention resolved to adopt the provisions of the Congressional proposal known as the Wilmot Proviso which opposed allowing slavery in territories recently acquired from Mexico in the Mexican-American War. Congressman David Wilmot himself attended the convention. His remarks are summarized here and, to give a fairer account of his sentiments, the pamphlet reprints a speech he gave in Albany following the convention. Also found are speeches by former congressmen from New York, C.C. Cambreleng and Bradford R. Wood and John Van Buren, lawyer and son of President Martin Van Buren. Scarce pamphlet documenting the important schism within the Quaker faith -a nationwide rift- between the followers of Elias Hicks and the remaining orthodox membership. "In 1811, he penned Observations on the Slavery of Africans and Their Descendants, arguing against both slavery and the purchase and use of products of slave labor. This work was a major influence on the later Free Produce movement.
