Description:
London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1913 A good copy of the 1st trade edition of 'In Powder and Crinoline' with 24 tipped in colour plates and numerous designs by Kay Nielsen. Undated but 1913. This was Kay Nielsen's first published book illustration and his reputation was such that Arthur Quiller-Couch was commissioned to find and rewrite the fairy tales to the title chosen by Nielsen. His illustrations are unique and unforgettable. This copy is in the publisher's quarter cloth binding with grey card boards. The spine has gilt titles and designs and the front board has red titles and grey illustration. The binding is sound but with the usual wear: pulling to the top and bottom of the spine and edge wear to the boards with some browning and marking. The decorative endpapers are present with some light browning and there is some repair to the front endpaper joint. Contents are complete including half title; frontispiece with tissue guard; title page on thick grey paper with red lettering;… Read More

With folding frontispiece 'representing the Monument erected at Calcutta, in Memory of Sufferers in the Black-Hole Prison'; title page; dedication pp i-vii; half title and text 432pp. The full leather binding is complete but the front board is detached and the title label to the spine is damaged. Description:
London: J M Dent & Co, 1907 A good to very good copy of this classic work with 24 colour plates, 12 tinted plates and numerous illustrations by Arthur Rackham. 1st edition thus. Rackham first illustrated Ingoldsby Legends in 1898 using a smaller format and without tipped in colour plates. He revisited the work in 1907 adding plates and redrawing some of the other illustrations. The subject matter, including as it does witches, spectres, knights and monks (and a finally repentant Jackdaw), is well suited to Rackham's style. The decorative binding is in clean and tight condition with slight pulling to the spine and a very small bump to the bottom corner of the back board. There is some light ink marking, more prevalent on the back board but with a few spots to the front. Top page edges gilted; remainder untrimmed. Internally the dark green decorative endpapers are present without mark. There is an inscription to the half title. Contents are complete, clean and in very good condition. There is a small… Read More

Description:
LONDON: Herbert Jenkins Limited, 1940 A near fine copy of the 11th printing of the first edition in bright orange cloth binding with a black silhouette of Jeeves chasing Harold the page boy on the front board. This book contains the immortal story of Bertie Wooster's stay at Twing and the attempts to place bets on entrants to the Vicar's Fete. This printing is circa 1940 and the book is with a slightly later wrap - probably 1949 - in fair condition. The binding is very bright and clean with slight pulling to spine ends and light wear to corners. There is some spotting at the top page edges (not visible internally) and a few spots to the foredge. Contents are very clean with some light foxing spots at the endpapers and a slight pale mark in the gutter at p 224. The paper is lightly toned. The wrap has general edge nibbles with loss at the top and bottom of the spine, and the flap folds. Description:
Londini: Ex officina typographica Thom. Cotes, 1634 A fair copy of the first printing of Insectorum Theatrum, classed as 'fair' because the title page and final plate page are in facsimile. The title page is that of the 3rd issue with a single printer named, but the book itself is 1st issue with page numbering at p 48 corrected in manuscript. This work was the first book on entomology to be published in Britain, and, although credited largely to Thomas Moffet (1553-1604), began as part of Conrad Gesner's researches in the mid 1500's. Thomas Penny and Caspar Wolf continued the work after Gesner's death, and Moffet, who was a neighbour and friend of Penny's, rescued the manuscript after Penny's death. It was finally published after Moffet's death by Theodore Mayerne (cf Lisney - Bibliography of British Lepidoptera). This copy has contemporary boards, rebacked with a newer spine and title label. The binding is in very good clean condition: there is wear to the boards but… Read More

Description:
London : J Johnson, 1795 A very good copy of this scarce title, with 46 superb hand coloured plates. William Lewin (1747-1795) intended this work to be the first volume of 'The Insects of Great Britain' series. However he died in 1795 with only this volume completed. This is the rare first issue which has the series title page and ends 'End of Volume I'. The second issue amends the title to the 'Papilios of Great Britain' making it stand-alone. This copy is a later half vellum binding with blind stamped decoration to the buckram boards. Page edges have light marbling and the endpapers are marbled. The binding is in very good condition. There is corner wear particularly to the bottom corners, which are bumped with leather loss. Contents: title pages in French and English; half title page 'The insects of Great Britain'; text in French and English with 46 hand coloured plates; index 3pp. There are 2 mispaginations: plate 6 with text is placed after plates 7 and 8; and… Read More

Description:
Oxford: Printed by Leonard Lichfield, 1642 An extremely scarce 1st edition copy of Francis Potter's work. Potter (1594-1678) was a clergyman with a wide range of other interests. He was an early member of the Royal Society (admitted in 1663), experimenting with bees, theorising about blood transfusion and making instruments including a sundial. He developed a theory that the approximate square root of 666 - 25 - had a strong connection with catholic institutions. His first attempt to set this out in 1637 was described as a 'wonderful discovery' by Joseph Mede, whose 'judgement' is included in the work. This copy has been rebacked, relaying as much as possible of the spine, which has raised bands, red title label and the date at the base. The corners have been rebuilt. The boards are marbled with a stain on the rear board. Edges are scuffed. Internally there is the armorial bookplate of William Legge to the front pastedown endpaper. The endpaper joints have been repaired. Page edges are red. Contents:… Read More

Description:
LONDON : John and Arthur Arch, 1815 A good copy of the 1st edition of this extremely rare work, with 11 plates, 9 of which are hand coloured. Brookes set out to write for those who wanted to understand Conchology, but who might not have a grounding in natural history. He took care to use english rather than latin names where possible, and to give readers a clear framework for their study. This copy is in a later speckled calf binding with gilt lining and blind stamped decoration to the board edges. The spine has raised bands with gilt lining and gilt stamped decoration. There is a leather title. It is in near fine condition. Page edges are marbled. There is an inked owners name to a preliminary - J Reid Moir. 3rd November 1919 - possibly the Reid Moir who authored 'Antiquity of Man in East Anglia'.
