The present copy is one of the 50 numbered copies (this is # 31) printed in "format Impérial" on "Papier Parcheminé français de Ville-sur-Saulx", and issued with a "suite" of the plates, loosely inserted in a separate port-folio. De Smet was a renown Belgian historian of Medicine.

Contemporary marbled calf, spine with red morocco, gilt lettered, label, in compartments gilt decorated with fleurons (joints slightly worn with a small crack), edges of sides with gilt ruler; edges red.. With 12 figures in the style of Ryff on 2 folded engraved plates. Raulin first doctor at Nérac (Guyenne) moved to Paris where he became physician to Louis XVI. He was a prolific author of both theoretical and practical works. The present work, written in a very comprehensive languages, was written by order of the French Government who was alarmed by the fatal results in childbirth caused by inexperienced country practitioner. This second edition was published in the same year as the first edition (who had only 168 pp.). This work was translated into Dutch, German and Portuguese. Dezeimeries III, 787; Bayle/Thillaye II, 357. --(The first 20 pages have a light waterstain; some scattered light foxing, but a nice copy).

(New York,: Donaldson bros,, ca. 1887).. A charming chromolithograph (14,5 x 12 cm.) which has served as a cover for Benson's Capicine Plaster advertisement booklet (not present). The art work was done by Slabury & Johnson.

Lugduni (Lyon),: Joannem Certe,, 1686. [xii], 413, [xxxiii] pp. Small 8vo (9,3 x 15,3 cm.). Contemporary brown calf (top and bottom of spine slightly damaged; upper edge of the front side slightly rubbed; corners a bit bumped), Spine in compartments gilt decorated and lettered; speckled edges. Seme wood-engraved head and tail pieces. With a contemporary engraved bookplate of Ludovicus Feuilherade M.D. ¶ Apparently the ONLY copy known of this 1686 Johannem Certe edition. The official "Editio secunda" was published by Certe in 1687. Presumably the 1686 edition was printed at the occasion of Tencke's inauguration at Montpellier in 1686, but the printer overlooked to print the King's approbation within this 1686 edition. Certe has to cancel the edition and released a little bid later (1687) the correct edition with the approbation. The 1686 editions: Montpellier Peronnel & Venice de Rhinetta, are pirate editions. No copy in the BNF or NLM, nor in the World Cat.

Contemporary calf, spine with 4 raised ribs, in compartment gilt decorated; red morocco title label (gilt decoration somewhat faint; top of spine has some slight loss of leather owing to rodent bites, but a good copy); edges red spickeled. With a nice half-page amorial engraving by Rössler and a few woodcut head- and tail pieces. The rare first edition. A very popular work of which 17 editions have been published between 1753 and 1828 in 3 languages. Former owner inscription (L. Merlin) on title.

Original printed wrappers (spine slightly worn and stained), uncut and unopened. With a portrait of Berthelot and several illustrations. This standard work was originally published by Steinheil in 1888. Extensive "table analytique" and index.

With a frontispiece and 157 plates. ¶ The rare original edition of a valuable work, illustrating 313 kinds of scientific instruments. This book is not only a means of information and reference respecting scientific instruments of every description, but also exhibits the great variety of such instruments that were produced in Great Britain during the first decades of the 20th century. --(Last 30 leaves have some fainnt damp staining in the upper marging).
