Cornwall, England: Unpublished, 1686. A remarkable manuscript (c200,000 words) that begins in London just before the 1688 Revolution and charts its author's return to his Cornish village where he pleads for the right to remain in communion with both 'Episcopal and Presbiterial' congregations. Over 300 pages the manuscript plots Rowse's efforts to assuage both conscience and Cornish neighbours. Shot through with powerfully expressed insights, the manuscript is a potent record of provincial intellectual life in a far corner of England. We can find no trace of published works in Bernard Rowse's hand nor much trace of him at all beyond legal documents of the period but this is a spiritual manuscript of considerable insight and depth. Manchester: Labour Press, 1897. Inscribed to an English socialist friend and wife of a founder member of the Labour Party, Lucy Henderson, with a letter to her from the pioneer of LGBTQ rights, women's rights and environmentalism laid in. Second edition bound in publisher's cloth with gilt lettering; fading to spine and a stain close to the tail. Floral endpapers; the first one only partially attached along the gutter. Carpenter has inscribed the half title opposite: 'Lucy Henderson All good wishes from E.C.' Otherwise the book is very good internally. Carpenter's letter is written on two sides of a single, heavily browned oblong leaf of notepaper (18x11cm) and undated but probably from the 1890s or a little after. Carpenter asks for news of 'yr brother and wife. Are they in the Riviera now?' A very good plus first edition in the uncommon wrapper designed by Lowen, rubbing to extremities but overall very good with excellent colour and contrast, not price-clipped. London: Unpublished Letter, 1872. No Binding. Very Good. Autograph letter with musical fragment from the Anglo-Italian composer then living in London, Ciro Pinsuti, to the English tenor and occasional composer W H Cummings, congratulating him on 'the great success of your charming Cantata', particularly the 'lovely subject in the Introduction.. and the quartett with Harp Accom[panimen]t..' Pinsuti laments the failure of his fellow country-men to live up to Cummings' vocal quality: 'I only wish that my Italian Tenors could do half as much, but alas! some them have as yet to learn their notes.' Pinsuti signs his name in full, giving an address in New Broad Street. The letter occupies 2 pages of a folded bifolium; paper blind stamped 'SS Maurizio Lazzaro'. Very Good 1872

London: Charles Wilson, 1839. Extensively illustrated Midshipman's log book of a return voyage from England to Madras with drawings of an albatross-shoot, whale-ships burning oil, a mirage at sea and a sequence of coastal views including St Helena and Tristan da Cunha. Folio-sized manuscript which has been copied by its author from the original document into a printed skeleton Log Book whilst incorporating his original drawings made on board the HMS Wellington. Rebound in recent quarter blue buckram over plain blue paper-covered boards. Borrer's original manuscript title 'Log Book' has been laid down on the upper cover. There are paper repairs to margins of the printed title page and the corners of a few early leaves. London: Skeffington and Son, 1933. Maritime memoir inscribed to the First World War correspondent and British government spin-doctor, Basil Clarke. Blue cloth, fading to spine. Bradford has inscribed the front flyleaf: 'To Sir Basil Clarke with the author's best wishes S. Bradford Feb 1934.' Internally very clean, a very good plus copy. Bradford was Chaplain to the RNR Officers' Club, Liverpool. Provenance: this book was acquired from a descendant of the First World War correspondent Basil Clarke (1879-1947) who was born in Altrincham, worked on the Manchester Guardian under C P Scott; witnessed the first Briton to die in an air crash (Sir Charles Rolls) before reporting clandestinely on the First World War at Ypres, then being accredited for the Battle of the Somme and subsequently writing a memoir of his war experiences, My Round of War. He reported on the Easter Rising, being the first British journalist to get independent reports out of Dublin but his subsequent time in Ireland from August 1920… Read More

London: Collins, 1943. Presentation copy from Captain Scott's second in command to an Irish woman who had sent him a 'gift parcel of steak' during the Second World War. Evans' book is bound in soft, textured cloth, stamped with an image of him on skis in blue to the upper board and blue spine lettering. Slight toning to the extremities of the binding which is otherwise very good. Blue decorative endpapers, a map tipped onto the verso of the final free endpaper, very good text. Evans has inscribed the book on the front flyleaf: 'With Best Wishes from E R G R Evans/ 1943'. Laid in is a note from Evans typed on HQ London Civil Defence Region headed paper and addressed to a Mrs Mchoone, 27th February, 1943, in Dublin thanking her for her gift 'which we look forward to eating today - enough for the whole household.' Glasgow: Walter MacFarlane & Co, c. 1882. pp 396 A catalogue of the cast iron works produced by MacFarlane's Saracen Foundry, Possilpark, Glasgow, including pipes and gutters, and highly decorative ridging, terminals, railings, gates, stairs and balconies. The catalogue is attractively produced and lavishly illustrated with detailed drawings, cross sections of ornamental gutters and architectural examples of the company's installations. Very good in green cloth with black titles, lightly rubbed to edges, bumped to corners,the pages are clean apart from a couple of childish scribbles in pencil. Twenty four original photographs taken by the Chief Site Construction Engineer of the building of the Victoria Falls Bridge, part of Cecil Rhodes's Cape to Cairo scheme. Professionally produced album for 'Photographs' bound in textured gun metal grey cloth over thick bevel-edged boards (19x16cm) On the front pastedown is written in English in red chalk: 'Imbault's Photos of Zambisi Bridge'. The twenty four photographs are window-mounted, recto and verso, on the twelve thick card leaves, 113x88mm in size. The album begins with four general images of the Victoria Falls location followed by a photo of cranes and a little crowd of workers followed by one of the early crossings: a single man suspended above the gorge in a bosun's chair. Next are seen a dozen white workers crossing in a larger cradle with two further images of this scene taken from a greater distance. London: Collins, 1960. No Binding. Fine. (18x21cm) Original dustjacket artwork in gouache on thick art paper for Rex Warner's pivotal classica-themedl novel. Overleaf the publisher Collins's print instructions, dated 16 March 1960 noting 'Add to bottom only to give 8 3/8 65 Proofs in Colour on Cartridge Paper...' The publication of Imperial Caesar marked Warner's transition from allegory to classical history in his novels and was met with some acclaim on first publication. Fine 1960
