With the autograph and date of Henry Samuel Partridge (1772 - 1858), Magdalen College, Oxford, 23 January 1802, on the front paste-down end-paper. Creech's translation of Theocritus was first published in 1684, just two years after his very successful translation of Lucretius. Straus, p. 221.

Londini: Prostat Venalis apud T. Payne et Filium..., 1787. 8vo (in 4s), 215 x 123 mms., pp. viii, cxxii,[2], 319 [320 errata], engraved frontispiece and two other engraved plates, contemporary polished tree calf, gilt border on covers, spine ornately gilt in compartments to a flower motif, red leather label; front joint slightly cracked, top and base of spine slightly chipped. Ignoramus was first performed in Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1615 and first printed in 1630; Ruggle (1575 - 1622) wrote other English comedies, but this one was his most successful and continued to be performed up to the end of the 18th century. The play, which apparently lasted five hours when first performed, is a satire on lawyers and is modelled on an Italian comedy, La Trappolaria (1596) by Giambattista della Porta, itself modelled on Plautus. This Italian translation by George Sivrac uses the plates by Harding that first appeared in 1793. The work appears in various states and issues: this appears to be Hazen's second state. "In 1528, the year before his death, the book for which Castiglione is most famous, The Book of the Courtier (Il Libro del Cortegiano), was published in Venice by the Aldine Press[11] run by the heirs of Aldus Manutius. After the last of subscribers and a note is double engraved title-page, with the Giunta on the recto and that of Edlin on the verso. This more-or-less diplomatic reprint was the work of the librettist and translator of Milton, Paolo Rolli (1687 - 1765), who worked in England from 1717 until 1737. A reprint of the much-admired edition by the Heirs of Filipo Giunta [i. e., Pasinello] in Florence in 1527.

Il Pastor Fido was first performed in honour of the nuptials of the Duke of Savoy and Catharine of Austria in 1585 and published in 1590 in Venice; it was frequently reprinted thereafter. A very good copy The French author and playwright Jean Puget de la Serre (1594 - 1665) was a prolific author, publishing over one hundred works in his life; Le Tombeau des delices du monde was first published in Brussels in 1630 and this appears to be the first and only Italian translation. There were numerous French reprints after the first edition of 1630. A satire, the work is more a sepulcher or tomb of the vanities of the world, rather than a bonfire, and the engraved title-page is presumably a representation of souls in hell. Domenico Mora (1530 - c. 1610) was an Italian writer and military leader who had lived twenty years in Poland working at the service of two kings of the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth, Stephen Báthory and Sigismund III Vasa. The work is divided into four parts, the first discussing the duties of a commanding officer; the second covers battle plans, tactics, and strategy; the third, fortification; and the fourth on attacking, conquering, and holding territory, usually a city. Mora expressed some scepticism about soldiers and the vocation of soldiering, asserting that many if not most were undisciplined, given to rape, plunder, and random killings. Large 4to, 283 x 207 mms., pp. vii [viii blank, ix floor plan, x - xi blank, xii lline-engraved ilkustration, 73 [74 imprints], 24 full-page line engravings, contemporary vellum (soiled), printed on thick paper, a very good copy with the bookplate of Samuel Gurney on the front paste-down end-paper. The engravings here came from the workshop of Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino (1483 - 1520), known generally as Raffaello and reproduce the plan and all wall-paintings from the Sala di Costantino, painted by his workshop between 1520 and 1524.
