Description:
Dublin & London: Maunsell and Company Ltd, 1917. The Belfast-born journalist Robert Wilson Lynd (1879-1949) was well-known in Irish literary circles. This is his fifth published book. Originally published in the "The New Statesman," Lynd's title essay achieved some notoriety when it was cited by the insurgent Irish nationalists of the Easter Uprising of 1916. This is a Very Good (Plus) to Near Fine copy of the First Edition. Green paper-covered boards with a linen spine and a paper label. 25 essays. Clean text; 158 pages, with a six-page "Selection from Maunsel's Anouncements" in the rear. Two bumps to the front edge and a bit of darkeneing to the spine, else this would be a Fine copy. There is a dustwrapper present, but it is obviously a homegrown effort, with a window roughly cut out on the spine to show the label. and is in rather rough condition. Quercus includes it, nonetheless, as it has presumably been with the book for quite a long time. In an archival plastic… Read More

Description:
London: Charles Fox, 1832. Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) has been called "the first female sociologist." Her 1837 study, "Society in America," which contains a critique of the state of female education, is considered foundational. She was certainly a prominent Victorian public intellectual, friend to J.S. Mill, George Elliot, Carlyle, H.H. Millman, and Bulmer-Lytton. She wrote on history and travel, and translated Comte. She was an activist, and her support for abolition made her unpopular in America. An atheist and in poor health, she had a fascination with Mesmerism. Supposedly, she dated Erasmus Darwin. These booklets are her tutorial on the ideas of Malthus, Ricardo, and Bentham. Here are ten volumes, Very Good copies generally. They are in the original binding, paper wraps secured with thread. The text blocks are excellent, very clear, but these are fragile productions, and some covers are detached. Quercus offers the following volumes. No. III, Brooke and Brooke Farm. A Tale… Read More
