London: Printed for E. and C. Dilly 1775, 1775. First (and seemingly only) edition. 8vo (172x100mm). pp. vi, [2], 141, [1 bl]. Quarter calf, marbled paper covered boards. Some rubbing to corners and joints but a very nice copy and internally excellent. Sir Robert Strange (1721-1792) was a Scottish engraver. Well connected, although with a tendency to fall out with potential patrons, he was a member of the Incorporated Society of Artists. A dispute in the Society led to the founding of the Royal Academy from which printers were excluded, save as associate members, an invitation declined by Strange and his engraver colleagues. The present book is the platform for Strange's grievances. He then abandoned England for a spell in France. However, Strange's exclusion from the RA seems to have done him little harm professionally. On his return to England in 1780, he gained access to the Royal Collection, producing celebrated engravings of two works by van Dyck and Benjamin West's The Apotheosis of… Read More

Upper cover a little scuffed and edges rubbed. Front pastedown has presentation bookplate of RUSI with disposal stamp. Slightly foxed but overall a very good copy of an important book which resulted in the election of Knowles to be a Fellow of the Royal Society. Knowles's work is a detailed study of the use and preservation of timber in ships. As he says in the preface, "the state and condition of the navy is a subject that cannot be too deeply studied, or too carefully attended to in this country; for whatever may be our political situation or connexion with the several Powers on the Continent of Europe, England should always recollect, that shops are her surest… Read More

Bound by Bayntun in black half morocco, pale blue linen covered boards, spine decorated and letter in gilt. Top edge gilt. Internally fine but with some slight staining to the fore-edge caused by the gilding to the top-edge. Illustrated by du Maurier who, before becoming a novelist was a successful cartoonist for Punch. His cartoon "True Humility" gives us the expression "Curate's Egg" although du Maurier plagiarised this from another magazine ("Judy") which run a similar cartoon with the same joke six months earlier. Whether du Maurier's novels are plagiarised we cannot say. Whether they are "curate's eggs" is another matter. du Maurier's three novels published in this uniform edition are offered here as a set of three, not sold individually.
