Description:
Washington City: War Department, 1861. 1861 Edition. Wraps. Overall VG.. This a special copy as it once belonged to Lt. Henry Baldwin, Battery M, 5th Artillery (Regular Army). He was cited on numerous occasions for his bravery, copies of some of the reports are with the book. He fought all through the Eastern Campaigns, may have been captured at Cedar Creek while wounded. He died 11/8/1864 after having his arm amputated. His signature and unit appears on the cover of the book.

Philadelphia: Lippincott, 1861. Unknown. Stiff wraps. Very good condition for a manual likely carried in the field. Slight loss of top of spine. Unusual pattern of something left on front glue down that does not affect anything else. Overall very nice./No Jacket. May contain as many as 88 plates according to the new part IV of Dornbusch. Actually plates are numbered, but there are two #83s and 87 is the end, hence 88 total. The officers putting together the info were Captain William French, Captain William Barry, and Bvt Major Henry J. Hunt. At least two of these men went on to big things during the War. Full of illustrations and tables. BOOK SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY FIRST SARGEANT L.F. ROOT, 2ND LIGHT BATTERY, ??? MILITIA, 1862. Not in Nevins. Dornbusch IV-11588.

Great attribution. Book came from the estate of Colonel Hans Mattson, the last commanding officer of the 3rd Minnesota. They had the distinction of being captured intact at Murfreesborough by General Forrest. The unit never lived it down. Inscribed in front with "Commanding Officer, Fort Halleck, Columbus, KY.".
