Description:
Kobe, Japan: Beikoku Haken Denkyoshi Jimukyoku [American Board of Missionaries], 1883. First Edition. Good. A Christian missionary provides an illustrated travelog of the Holy Land, Europe, and the United States for Japanese audiences. Gulick, born in Hawaii (1830-1923), was stationed in Japan from 1870 to 1892. In the early 1880s, he made an extended tour of the West, speaking widely on the efforts to convert Japanese to Christianity. This book, apparently only published in Japanese, introduces the West to Japanese converts and potential converts. The book is illustrated with ten engraved or woodblock plates (three folding), plus several in-text illustrations. The most affecting image is block print of an Arab woman, which makes good use of negative space. [2], 8, 131, [1] pages. Not in OCLC. First edition. A good copy, bound in paste paper over boards, with a cloth spine. Text block nearly detached from binding, thus a fair to good copy of a very scarce book.

[Washington, DC]: Distributed by O.W.I. [Office of War Information] for the Office of Economic Stabilization, 1944. Ephemera. Very good. A rather fierce-looking poster encouraging women to participate in the federal efforts to control inflation driven by shortages during the Second World War. An illustration of a woman wearing an apron, her teeth and fist clenched dominate the poster. Below the image are a list of seven key actions: buy war bonds; pay taxes; get life insurance; reduce debt; buy only what is needed; comply with rationing; and cooperate with wage stabilization efforts. 20-1/8 by 28-5/16 inches. Small piece of upper left corner missing, short tears at the folds, thus very good. Folded for mailing, as issued. SHIPS FOLDED. This is an original World War II poster, not a reproduction.

Description:
McLean, VA: Human Sciences Research, 1972. First Edition. Trade paperback. Very good. A guide to help officers combat racial discrimination in the army in the waning years of the Viet Nam war. The authors report that the army had few Black officers, that Black soldiers had a hard time obtaining technical positions, and that Black soldiers were twice as likely as white soldiers to face discipline. The handbook devotes most of its efforts to trying to convince white officers that they and other white soldiers might be the problem. The final chapter (Appendix A) traces the history of segregation and integration in the Army. vi, 87 pages. 8 by 10-1/2 inches. Prepared for the Department of the Army, Motivation and Training Laboratory, U.S. Army Manpower Resources Research and Development Center, under contract DAHC 19-17-C-0020. With an org chart for the US Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences laid in. A very good or better copy in black printed wrappers. Org chart fine.
