Description:
London : GG and J Robinson, 1798 A good copy of the first volume of this important work, in more recent half leather binding, with 24 black and white plates. William Nicholson published the first part of his monthly Journal of Natural Philosophy, Chemistry and The Arts” in April 1797. This is the complete series for volume 1 running from April 1797 to March 1798. Each month consisting of a collection of papers submitted by various authors. In contrast to the Transactions of The Royal Society, which has many glittering names but also many poor contributions, all of these papers have scientific merit. The papers themselves are well presented and structured, with references, descriptions of experiments, analyses and reasoned results. As such it represents a style that we would associate today with a learned journal presenting research outcomes from our Universities and Research Organisations. Nicholson edited this journal from its inception up to its closure in 1814, though some reports claim it… Read More

Description:
LONDON : J Pemberton, D Browne, 1732 A VG copy of this rare and interesting work by John Macky (published anonymously). John Macky (d 1726) was a Scotsman and a government agent or spy. According to sources he informed the British of James II's intention to invade England in 1792, and his network of spies was vital to the discovery in February and March 1708 of Jacobite plans for the invasion of Scotland. This book, in the form of a series of letters, is written with considerable knowledge and authority. He travelled extensively in the region, dying finally in Rotterdam in 1726. This copy is newly rebound in half leather and marbled boards with raised bands to spine, gilt tooling and gilt title label. Internally, the contents comprise: half title; advertisement for 'A Journey through England', title page, Introduction with decorative headpiece, initial capitals, and decorative tailpiece (pp V-XXX), publisher's advert (2pp), errata (1 pge), letters with decorative head and tailpieces… Read More

Description:
London: C Rivington, 1735 A fair copy of the 1st edition in contemporary binding. Classed as 'fair' because it lacks the map. An important work because of the account of central America, one of the few recorded by an outsider. Cockburn, Thomas Rounce, Richard Banister, John Holland, Thomas Robinson, and John Ballman, found themselves 'naked and wounded', stranded on the shore at Porto-Cavalo after being taken by Spanish 'Guarda-Costa'. They made their way inland and trailled around 2,400 miles across Central America to Panama. The account was a best-seller, although initially regarded as a fake because of the level of danger and privation it portrayed. The panelled calf binding has been repaired to reinforce the corners and edges, and provide a new spine with raised bands and title label. It is in very good condition. Internally the endpapers have been repaired - there is some loss to the top corner of the fep. Contents: title page (faint signature to top and staining to… Read More
