Description:
Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, London, illustrated auction catalogue for the sale held on 27th and 28th April, 1914. Yellow printed wrappers, small 4to, 27 cm, ,. 94 pp, 4 plates. 375 lots. Frank Herrmann comments on this sale in his 'Sotheby's -Portrait of an Auction House': "Hodgkins marvellous sense of history came to the fore in the disposal of the trade cards, book plates, papal indulgences, news sheets and early newspapers. It seemed that every major event in England since Elizabeth I was chronicled here in one form or another; and the seventeenth century in particular was represented in great strength. The trade cards covered every conceivable occupation from bookseller to brick-moulder, from floor cloth maker to glass cutter, from indigo dealer to money changer, from profile painter to sago powder maker, from tallow chandler to whip maker - and all 375 lots of riveting social history went for a mere £1,630 in the two days... The Hodgkin sale was not a great…

Description:
Frederick Muller Limited, London, first edition, 1976. Cloth, small 4to,. xvi, 192 pp, ills. From the blurb: "This new addition to the Ars Typographica Library traces the life and work of J. H. Mason from his humble beginnings to recognition as one of the great scholar-printers of this century. His introduction to printing came as an apprentice compositor at the Ballantyne Press, and Mason moved from there to the Doves Press where he worked in close collaboration with T. J. Cobden-Sanderson and Sir Emery Walker. Walker's influence on printing, and on the work and destiny of Mason, was profound, and particularly affected Mason's move to the Central School and the establishment of the first Printing Day Technical School. This important period of Mason's work is dealt with at length and well illustrated. Mason also worked with Count Kessler at the Cranach Press, and collaborated with such other eminent figures as Gordon Craig, Eric Gill, Edward Johnston and J. B. Prince. His…

Chatto & Windus Ltd, London, first edition, 1995. Cloth, 8vo, 25 cm,. [2], 249 pp. From the blurb: "Edward Lannion, the young master of Hatting Hall, is about to marry Marian Berran. At Penndean nearby, preparations are underway for the wedding, overseen by an anxious Benet. Family and friends gather, the night is warm and clear, the wedding guests wander in the grounds and under the stars. Then occurs a most remarkable event. Iris Murdoch's new novel is a fast-moving drama with a rich cast of characters: Owen, the eccentric painter; Mildred, the Holy Woman; Tuan, the mystery boy; Rosalind, Marian's younger sister, and not least, with his own secret thoughts, Edward Lannion himself. These friends and lovers are forced to make new and surprising choices. And Jackson, an enigmatic figure watching over them all, has to make his own obscure and agonising decisions. Spine a trifle cocked, otherwise Very Good in Very Good dustwrapper.

Description:
J. W. Lowndes, Oxford, original newspaper issues, various dates, August - September 1868. Unbound broadsheets, horizontally folded,. 8 pp per issue. Jackson's Oxford Journal was founded by William Jackson, the Oxford University printer, in the early 18th century as a Saturday weekly: it had a distinguished run, being published from May 1753 through to 1928 (by then as the " Oxford Journal Illustrated "). Our issues come from 1868, when the newspaper sold for "3d; stamped 4d) a copy, for which the purchaser received a large broadsheet paper of some 8 pp measuring 25 x 18 inches and densely packed with advertisements, news and notices. The orientation of the newspaper was Conservative. In an 1853 centenary issue stated " we hope that our firm adhesion to our own political creed and Church principles, is consistent with, not merely tolerance, but respect for our opponents. We have never hesitated to express our own unbiased opinion on every public question upon its merits, and…
