The trade card of J. Brian advertises his services as a cutlery manufacturer and seller. Along with traditional """"table knifes, forks, &co"""", which he made, sold and repaired, Brian was also a """"dealer in ivory, stag & buck horn"""", as illustrated at the top of the card by an engraving of an elephant and a deer. During the colonisation of Africa, up to one thousand tonnes of ivory were exported from the continent to Europe. Closer to home, Brian would have had a far more ample and less expensive supply of horn from native male deer. Interestingly, Brian is not found in the records as the sole trader in cutlery at the advertised premises. The eighteen views surrounding the map depict the New Post Office, Italian Opera House, Queen's New Palace, Entrance to Hyde Park, Custom House, National Scottish Church, Drury Lane, Somerset House, Westminster Abbey, The Colosseum, Covent Garden Theatre, Thames Tunnel, St Paul's, Waterloo Bridge, Bank of England, New London Bridge, London University and Hammersmith Suspension Bridge. A map of Japan from the first edition of Thomas Tegg's 'A London Encyclopaedia, or Universal Dictionary'. The publisher, Thomas Tegg (1776-1845), began his publishing career as an apprentice to Alexander Meggett, a book-seller in Dalkeith. After an itinerant life selling chapbooks in Berwick, working for the editor of the Sheffield Register and travelling in Ireland and Wales, he moved to London in 1796. He found success in publishing pamphlets containing abridgements of popular works; he sold fifty thousand copies of a work on the life of Nelson after the Battle of Trafalgar. 'A London Encyclopedia' was published twice in 22 volumes in 1829 and 1839.

Globe, hand-coloured lithographed paper laid on wood, dissected into 34 pieces, with wooden finial, mounted on turned wooden table stand. Slightly browned, with some small areas where the paper is chipping at the edges of the puzzle pieces. Biography Alphonse Giroux (1776-1848) trained as an artist under Jacques-Louis David, and later established a shop for paints and varnishes in the late eighteenth century at 7 rue du Coq-Saint-Honoré in Paris. In 1822 Giroux's shop was listed as 'Papeterie, Couleurs, et Galerie de tableaux' and was said to supply 'tous les articles nécessaires au dessin, au lavis des plans, à l'aquarelle, à la gouache, à la peinture sur porcelaine, à la miniature et à l'huile, comme aussi à la fourniture des bureaux. Trade card for John Taylor and John Perry, who made and sold gold, silver and luxury goods from their shops in Birmingham and London.The 1808 'New Triennial Directory of Birmingham' and the 1818 'Wrightson's new triennial directory of Birmingham' both list Taylor and Perry, including cut glass as one of their specialities, among those announced on the present trade card. The latter also includes a whole page dedicated to the trade card, which the proprietors undoubtedly paid a further fee to ensure. Taylor and Perry advertised in other directories too, including the 'Cornish's Grand Junction, and the Liverpool and Manchester Railway Companion', which included an advert listing both their Birmingham and London shops in 1837. Arkell, who had been responsible for Booth's seminal maps of London poverty, and like them, the information was taken from School Board visitors' statistics. The map stretches north to south from the Hackney Road to the Tower of London, and west to east from Fenchurch Street Station to Tower Hamlets, City of London Cemetery. The Tsarist persecutions of the Jewish population in Russia and Poland in the latter half of the nineteenth century had caused many to the seek refuge in the East End.
