Pluto Press, (London, 1978). 206 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), soft cover. B&w photos. "The critics have never treated (London) kindly - his tales were too earthy and ingenuous. His radical political comrades found him an uncomfortable companion - too famous, too wilful and too often given to racist, sexist and elitist opinion. But he struck a chord in the minds of millions who raised him high above the poverty and obscurity to which he was born in 1876, and whose demands on his huge talent helped drive him to an early death forty years later..." Description:
Vancouver: Douglas & McIntyre, 1994. 182 pp, 4to (12 1/2" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour. "Jack Shadbolt, praised as 'one of Canada's most intense and original artists', began his long and illustrious career in the 1930s and continues to flourish today. This book celebrates Shadbolt's drawings, the backbone and inner life of his practice, which reveal how much he relies on line to define form and space. Both emotion and intellect inspire and inform Shadbolt's sure hand, in works that involve a deep love of nature and a profound sense of place. His imagery explores both organic and architectural elements, as well as invoking notions of myth and ritual. These 150 drawings have been selected by Shadbolt himself to suggest his investigations of form and are arranged in dialogue with each other. The introduction explores Shadbolt's art in relation to the forces of history: artistic, social and ecological. Jack Shadbolt also presents a brief… Read More

Description:
Vancouver: Douglas & McIntyre, 1990. 243 pp, 12 1/2" H. "In this first full study of the renowned (Canadian) painter, Scott Watson explores Shadbolt's personal struggles to be an artist and to resolve conflicting drives - between spontaneity and restraint, order and chaos - in the context of shifting trends in art as well as social change. Shadbolt also struggled to be understood in a culture that, when he began, was not ready for modern art. From (his) early love of nature and awakening artistic sensibilities to his coming of age while studying in New York, London and Paris, Watson explores the evolution of an artist who has an international perspective but who is also a unique regional painter with a profound sense of place. In chronicling Shadbolt's development, the author has created a portait that gives an insightful look at the nature of the artistic sensibility, enriched with liberal excepts from the painter's own writings on art and the life of the artist.… Read More

Description:
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1984. 318 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H). B&w plates, maps/battle plans. "(A) lively and authoritative account of the United States Navy from Independence throught the War of 1812. During this turbulent period the new American republic fought three wars - declared and undeclared - against the Barbary States, France, and Great Britain. The first two were entirely naval affairs; the third, a combination of military action on land and sea. In each the survival of the young nation was due in large part to the efforts of the navy and the exploits of such men as Stephen Decatur, Isaac Hull, Thomas Truxtun, and Oliver Hazard Perry. William Fowler is a historian with the capacity to convert meticulous research into flowing narrative. Here he fuses political and naval history, looking at political forces in the rapidly expanding U.S. society as well as at naval ordnance, operations, and the fateful and exciting battles at sea. He deals too with the often neglected human… Read More

New York: Barnes & Noble, 1995. 238 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). B&w illustrations. "(T)races the background and influences that shaped the character of the German soldier from the time of Frederick the Great to the end of the Second World War. Laffin provides an illuminating account of the attitude of the individual soldier to the increasing militarism of the years before the First World War. Included here are extracts from letters written by young German soldiers who, in spite of the mud and carnage, regarded the war as a sacred mission that would bring honor and glory to their country. After Germany's defeat the Treaty of Versailles came as a blow to German pride and helped pave the way to the Second World War. Psychology now played a role in the German soldier's training, and emphasis was given to individual initiative - a concept wholly contrary to the old training that required strict obedience. But such preparation was no match for the Russian winter of 1942, and Laffin's… Read More

New York: Minotaur, 2015. 321 pp, 9 1/2" H. "On the mountainous border of China and Tibet in 1708, a detective must learn what a killer already knows: that empires rise and fall on the strength of the stories they tell. Li Du was an imperial librarian. Now he is an exile on his way out of the country forever. Arriving in Dayan, the last Chinese town before the Tibetan border, he is surprised to find it teeming with travelers, soldiers, and merchants. All have come for a spectacle unprecedented in this remote province: an eclipse of the sun commanded by the Emperor himself. When a Jesuit astronomer is found murdered in the home of the local magistrate, blame is hastily placed on Tibetan bandits. But Li Du suspects this was no random killing. Everyone has secrets: the ambitious magistrate, the powerful consort, the bitter servant, the irreproachable secretary, the East India Company merchant, the nervous missionary, and the traveling storyteller who can't keep his own story straight.… Read More

Description:
Toronto: Peace Publications, 2002. 226 pp, large 8vo (9" H). "Jainism is an ancient Indian religion, one with historical wisdom surprisingly relevant for the 21st century. This book is intended for two audiences: for those who want to understand the basic ideas and story of Jainism and also for those who seek ethical principles that may help society meet current challenges. The book begins with Professor Parikh's own search for meaning, starting from a career as a scientist where religion and related philosophy were seen as somewhat secondary pursuits. The struggle to understand the many problems of the 20th century led the author to rediscover for himself key Jain teachings. He found that the logic of the Jain worldview, and its doctrines would resonate well with the rational mindset of the modern generations, and would, thereby assist them in their struggle to resolve many issues currently facing our planet. The book explains key Jain principles and practices in a simple lucid… Read More

Description:
London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1985. 368 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "To be King of Scots was never the passport to peace or joy, and for young James the Fifth the throne made an uncomfortable seat indeed. As a boy he had been deliberately corrupted by step-father, the Red Douglas, Earl of Angus, so that he might get both king and kingdom into his power. Even when James escaped from Angus's clutches, he still had that most rebellious and powerful house to cope with. Not to mention the Hamiltons, whose chief, the Earl of Arran, was next in line to the crown. So he did not have his troubles to seek. Add to this, James himself was impetuous, hot-blooded, handsome, with no great interest in matters of state, but an enormous interest in women. While to the south, his uncle Henry the Eighth of England watched every move north of the border, poised to invade. In this second of his trilogy of love and hatred, folly and statesmanship, poetry and martyrdom, Nigel Tranter paints a vivid picture of a… Read More

Description:
Lincoln, Rhode Island: Andrew Mowbray, 1989. 288 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, technical drawings, reproductions. "Although the idea of a barrel-less revolver where the cylinder is elongated so the front of each chamber acts as a barrel is not unique, or even rare, its patented knuckle guard which could be used as 'brass knuckles' against an assailant was an appealing invention in its time. In this comprehensive study the author penetrates the mystique of these dual purpose icons of self-defense, so aptly named 'My Friend', and presents a detailed history of James Reid, his factory in the picturesque Catskill Mountains, the pistols which he fabricated there (in all their complex variations) and the inexorable economic forces which eventually brought production to an end. Also included are analyses of the oft' misunderstood non-knuckleduster guns made by Reid - including those made in New York CIty - a history of knuckleduster firearms and a study of Reid's… Read More
