Macmillan,, 1908.. The Detmolds' most celebrated joint achievement, and among the finest book illustrations ever produced. The set consisted of 16 prints after watercolours depicting scenes from Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. Chromolithograph mounted on heavy wove paper with the original grey mount as issued. Sheet size 43.3 x 31.1 cm. Very good condition.

San Francisco: City Lights Books,, 1961. An inscribed copy First edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the title page, "Allen Ginsberg, for Vance Morgan, inscribed '81". The recipient was likely the American book collector Vance Morgan. Kaddish is widely considered one of Ginsberg's masterpieces alongside Howl. He wrote the poem after the death of his mother Naomi, during a consequentially dark period of his life. Small octavo. Original black and white wrappers lettered in black and white. Short closed tear at foot of spine, wrappers faintly foxed and toned, extremities a touch rubbed. A very good copy indeed. Morgan A4 a1.1.

Sendai: Hayashi Shihei,, 1786-91. Epoch-making First edition of this landmark geopolitical analysis, one of only 38 copies completed before it was suppressed and the author imprisoned. Completed 60 years before Commodore Perry's arrival, it first suggested that Japan could not remain isolated and needed an outward-facing military policy and modernized weaponry. Today, eight copies survive institutionally; this is the only copy traced at auction. In the late 18th century, Japanese intellectual society was electrified by the discovery of a letter from the exiled Hungarian aristocrat Count Maurice Benyovszky to a Dutch factory trader in Nagasaki, thanking him for provisioning Benyovszky's ship and describing Russian plans for an attack on Hokkaido and its neighbouring islands. Musicians featured include Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Peggy Lee, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Eddie Safranski, King Oliver's Band with Lil Hardin, Leslaw Lic and Jerzy Matuszkiewicz, Katerine Valente, and Gerry Mulligan. Inevitably uncommon, pages perforated to be torn away and the materials far from durable; however, although designed to be disposable this is an attractive piece, and a reminder of the enduring popularity of jazz in Eastern Europe. Verdict: excellent book by a genius who will do anything to attract attention" - Kurt Vonnegut First edition, first printing, of the author's first book, with a rare galley proof of an omitted chapter entitled "Therapy and Corned Beef While You Wait" loosely inserted. A pencil annotation on the upper margin reads "Omitted from Book, better than 4/5 of the stuff in the book!". Wolf approached Esquire magazine in 1963 about an article on the hot rod and custom car culture of southern California. He struggled with the piece, and his editor Byron Dobell asked him to type up his notes so that someone else could write it. Wolfe acquiesced, haphazardly compiling his notes into a letter the evening before the deadline. Dobell removed the salutation "Dear Byron" and published the letter as it was, under the title "There Goes (Varoom! Varoom! That Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby". The rare first Dutch edition First appearance in Dutch of Marx's Lohnarbeit und Kapital, with a flattering dedication to Marx by the translator and compiler, Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis (1846-1919), a Dutch socialist. "Originally a Lutheran pastor (1870-1879), he left the church, founded the socialist weekly Recht voor Allen (1879). He played a leading part in developing the Social-Democratic movement in the Netherlands; was elected to parliament for a term (1881-1891); disappointed in legislating social reform, he turned to anarchism (1890s). He authored a number of propaganda brochures." (Draper: The Marx-Engels Glossary, p. 154.) Nieuwenhuis sent a copy of the work to Marx on 8 January, 1881, Marx replying in a letter of 22 February in which he expresses a desire to make a list of changes and corrections for a second edition, but regrets that personal difficulties prevent him from so doing. Uncommon presentation set First editions, presentation copies, inscribed by le Carré to his friend Jerzy Pietrkiewicz and with Pietrkiewicz's library stamps. Pietrkiewicz was a Polish poet, novelist, and translator who emigrated to England during the Second World War, later becoming professor of Polish literature at King's College London. The second and third works are first impressions, while the first is a second impression. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Jerzy with love, David, alias John lé Carre". The Honourable Schoolboy is signed on the title page and inscribed below the dedication: "and for Jerzy with affection & admiration, David".
