Description:
[Germany?: United States Department of War Information:, 1945]. First edition, first printing. "This book, which is not much more than a pamphlet, may represent the single most significant use of photography as a witness in the medium's history" (Parr & Badger, p. 194). The book "was distributed in Germany by the American War Information unit at the end of World War II in order to convey to the civilian population the enormity of the crimes committed by the Nazis in the name of the German people... The book shows, with a terse accompanying commentary, images from five of the concentration camps liberated by the Allies in 1945 - Buchenwald, Belsen, Gardelegen, Nordhausen and Ohrdruf. The names of the individual camps - although now infamous - do not matter in a sense, for the pictures from each show a similar litany of horror - piles of naked corpses, shocked, starved survivors and stunned German civilians brought in to witness what had been happening close to their homes" (ibid.). Quarto. Original… Read More

Description:
San Francisco: City Lights Books,, 1961. An inscribed copy First edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the title page, "Allen Ginsberg, for Vance Morgan, inscribed '81". The recipient was likely the American book collector Vance Morgan. Kaddish is widely considered one of Ginsberg's masterpieces alongside Howl. He wrote the poem after the death of his mother Naomi, during a consequentially dark period of his life. Small octavo. Original black and white wrappers lettered in black and white. Short closed tear at foot of spine, wrappers faintly foxed and toned, extremities a touch rubbed. A very good copy indeed. Morgan A4 a1.1.

Description:
Sendai: Hayashi Shihei,, 1786-91. Epoch-making First edition of this landmark geopolitical analysis, one of only 38 copies completed before it was suppressed and the author imprisoned. Completed 60 years before Commodore Perry's arrival, it first suggested that Japan could not remain isolated and needed an outward-facing military policy and modernized weaponry. Today, eight copies survive institutionally; this is the only copy traced at auction. In the late 18th century, Japanese intellectual society was electrified by the discovery of a letter from the exiled Hungarian aristocrat Count Maurice Benyovszky to a Dutch factory trader in Nagasaki, thanking him for provisioning Benyovszky's ship and describing Russian plans for an attack on Hokkaido and its neighbouring islands. While the count's claims concerning Russia were wildly incorrect, in Japan his warnings "started a new type of thinking about the problems of war. Apart from two abortive attempts by the Mongols to invade the country in the… Read More

Gdansk: "Jazz" Miesiecznik Illustrowany,, 1957. Stylish promotional calendar for the long-running Polish jazz magazine Jazz: Illustrated Monthly. Inevitably uncommon, pages perforated to be torn away and the materials far from durable; however, although designed to be disposable this is an attractive piece, and a reminder of the enduring popularity of jazz in Eastern Europe. Description:
New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux,, 1965. Verdict: excellent book by a genius who will do anything to attract attention" - Kurt Vonnegut First edition, first printing, of the author's first book, with a rare galley proof of an omitted chapter entitled "Therapy and Corned Beef While You Wait" loosely inserted. A pencil annotation on the upper margin reads "Omitted from Book, better than 4/5 of the stuff in the book!". Wolf approached Esquire magazine in 1963 about an article on the hot rod and custom car culture of southern California. He struggled with the piece, and his editor Byron Dobell asked him to type up his notes so that someone else could write it. Wolfe acquiesced, haphazardly compiling his notes into a letter the evening before the deadline. Dobell removed the salutation "Dear Byron" and published the letter as it was, under the title "There Goes (Varoom! Varoom! That Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby". Its notoriety gained Wolfe enough fame to publish this title, a… Read More

Description:
The Hague: Liebers & Co,, [1881]. The rare first Dutch edition First appearance in Dutch of Marx's Lohnarbeit und Kapital, with a flattering dedication to Marx by the translator and compiler, Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis (1846-1919), a Dutch socialist. "Originally a Lutheran pastor (1870-1879), he left the church, founded the socialist weekly Recht voor Allen (1879). He played a leading part in developing the Social-Democratic movement in the Netherlands; was elected to parliament for a term (1881-1891); disappointed in legislating social reform, he turned to anarchism (1890s). He authored a number of propaganda brochures." (Draper: The Marx-Engels Glossary, p. 154.) Nieuwenhuis sent a copy of the work to Marx on 8 January, 1881, Marx replying in a letter of 22 February in which he expresses a desire to make a list of changes and corrections for a second edition, but regrets that personal difficulties prevent him from so doing. A second edition was published in 1889. Octavo (204 x 126 mm.), viii, 82… Read More

Description:
Bern: A. Francke,, 1946. First German language edition, originally published in English in the US in 1942; scarce in the jacket. Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy was Schumpeter's most important and controversial book, a philosophical analysis of economics and history in which he coined the term "creative destruction". Blaug, who calls this his masterpiece, notes that in this work Schumpeter "paradoxically rejected the Marxian diagnosis of the imminent breakdown of capitalism and, at the same time, predicted the almost inevitable arrival of socialism as a result of the betrayal of capitalist values by the intellectuals of the western world" (Great Economists Before Keynes, p. 216). Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt on blue ground, top edge blue. With dust jacket. Ownership signature to front free endpaper and p. 13, pencil annotations to text, else a fine, tight copy, in near-fine jacket, discreet tape reinforcement at on verso to a couple nicks, light creasing at head of spine… Read More
