Memoir of the 8 years Isabel Russell served in a secretarial role for author E.B. White and Katharine White, a veteran of The New Yorker staff, in their retirement home in North Brooklin, Maine. These were to be the writers' last years, and Russell proved to be a keen, affectionate, and honest observer of many moments in their lives. Elwyn Brooks White had been born in 1899, and himself had birthed such classics in youth literature as 'Charlotte's Web'. Katharine, in his later years, managed access requests to him from colleagues and fans in the literary world, and was eagerly writing her own memoir. Both had predeceased this volume.

Katy was a big red crawler tractor, and strong. She had a bulldozer part to push dirt around, and a snow plow, well, to plow snow. She belonged to the Highway Department of the City of Geoppolis. Then, one winter a big snow storm came, starting off with about 4 inches. All the city truck plows did what they could. Snow kept falling. Katy was sent out to take care of 10 inches of snow. Still the snow was coming down, and it was Katy left alone to plow out the city so other work could happen. Classic 1940s-1950s.

A few hundred escaped. The rest were murdered. Two years later, German troops overran the Smolensk region. and found the buried bodies of some 4300 of the Polish officers in the Katyn wood. Each had been shot in the back of the head. The crime of Katyn became a propaganda tool. Several appendices report the full crime, including the 4143 victims identified as removed from the mass grave.
