Early in life she runs away from the primitive mountain life to the newer and more complicated America of the valley mill towns, and this novel is her odyssey, the physical wandering and mental groping of a girl who works in cotton mills and shoe factories and " five and dime" running up against al kinds, learning to love the machines she tends, learning to wear silk stockings and good clothes instead of the shapeless garb of the mountain folk, learning to love the speed and shine and power of fast motor cars, acquiring as she goes along a shrewd, hard but brave and totally American philosophy. The book is in fine and bright condition with slight toning to interior boards… Read More

Description:
Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin, 1997. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. New/New. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Book is new as is priced ( 23.00) jacket. Now protected in Mylar. For Nevelle and his mother, hong kong is part of Britain. One of the pleasanter parts. Cozy, monotonous, profitable and homey. Big breakfasts, and high tea and bad weather, the races at happy Valley, roast beef at Fatty's Chophouse and for Nevelle Bunt Mullard, the blue hotels of Kowloon Tong, where he eats his lunch and sometimes rents a room with a girl by the hour.Bunt and his mother Betty can see China from their parlor, but have never been there. They detest Chinese food and the " take-away" as they call the hand over of Hong Kong to mainland China does not particularly concern them. A fine read and a fine collectible.
