"Kenilworth was born out of Constable's suggestion to write a novel set during the time of Queen Elizabeth; however, Scott rejected the suggestion that it be entitled "The Armada" because he had other ideas than centring the novel on the epic events of the invasion. He based the novel around the legend of the murder of Amy Robsart, a story told in Meikle's old ballad, which had been one of Scott's favourite poems.
