New York: Farrar Straus Giroux, (1982). First edition. Advance Reading Copy. Both the book and a author complimentary slip (laid in) are inscribed by Settle to Doris Grumbach (author/critic). It must have been around the time Pen/Faulkner, which Settle started in Charlottesville, moved to the Folger in Washington, D.C. The book is INSCRIBED "For Doris on the night of the great move Love Mary Lee"; and the card says "For Doris - Here's to coming to Washington. Bless you for being in C-ville. Love Mary Lee." Fine in glossy, printed wraps.

Full gilt-decorated leather boards with raised spine bands, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, and ribbon place marker. Fine.

Carpenter's bookplate (with Kipling quote) on front pastedown with inscription above reading, "For Herbert M. Carpenter {erasure] Evanston, Ill. June 14 [corrected from 24], 1951." It appears "Herbert" has been corrected also. (Brothers!) Typed errata slip tipped to free endpaper differs from another we have examined. Original playbill, souvenir playbook (magazine-style keepsake offered for sale at each play); and original ticket stub for the Monday evening November 22 1954 performance starring Alfred Drake & Doretta Morrow at Ziegfeld Theatre. Souvenir playbook cover illustration by Hirschfeld. Overall very good to near fine with only scattered mild creasing and light soiling. Interesting seeing vintage ads and an original ticket stub with its low, low price.

Red cloth boards speckled, slight offset from boards to endpapers but otherwise about very good in good, lightly soiled and somewhat scraped/rubbed dust jacket with closed tear on front panel affecting second "S" in "KISS" (still legible) and edges worn (rubbed and small chips and tears).
