[Paris]: [Langlois], 1824. Fine.. Black and white engraving, 320 x 238mm. Very rare early proof for an engraving of a potoroo in the zoological Atlas of the Freycinet voyage account: the engraving as finally published would include a further taxonomical detail in the form of added detail of the animal's skull, titled "Son crâne", and the caption would be entirely changed, renaming the animal completely from Kangurus lepturus as shown here to Hypsiprymnus white. These are names given to different specimens of Gaimard's Rat-Kangaroo collected by the Freycinet voyage zoologists Jean Rene Constant Quoy and Joseph Paul Gaimard. We are not aware of the reasoning that led to this change of name, but such a substantial change from proof to finished engraving is noteworthy. Oahu: Na na Misionari I Pai, 1835. Dusted and a little browned, some pages with marked spotting; a very good copy in original reverse calf binding, neatly rebacked to match, a little worn, early 'Society of Inquiry Library' label to front pastedown.. Small octavo, original reverse calf binding. Rare and important: a landmark in missionary publishing in Hawaii, this is the first complete edition of the New Testament in the Hawaiian language, printed entirely by the Mission Press. David Forbes in the Hawaiian National Bibliography gives an excellent and detailed account of the circumstances surrounding the publication. Printing of the New Testament began after the General Meeting in June 1835, where the task of preparing an Hawaiian version was given precedence over any other task the missionaries were working on. The work was actually completed in early 1836. A substantial number of copies was published but, as with many early Hawaiian imprints, the survival rate today is very low. .

Leipzig (vol. 1) and Berlin, 1797. Six volumes, small octavo, two large folding engraved maps of North America, a folding plate of the breadfruit and 19 other plates; in contemporary (probably German) half calf and marbled boards, flat spines gilt in compartments, light brown leather labels and green diagonal numbering-pieces; a very attractive set. A charming set in completely original condition of the first collected edition of the works of Georg Forster. The first volume was revised and edited by Forster himself, who died before the remaining volumes were published, and was the only volume to be published in Leipzig (it was reprinted later in Berlin); the subsequent volumes were published in Berlin between 1794 and 1797. Some sets are therefore found with the second (Berlin) rather than the first (Leipzig) edition of the initial volume. Collapsible engraved and handcoloured globe in six gores (170 mm. tall); contained in the original marbled paper portfolio, label on front cover as above, comprising a colured lithograph title-page, engraved contents on verso, two mounted handcoloured explanatory plates, and with a continuous frieze folding from the case showing 15 ethnographical portraits from around the world (1725 mm). A well-preserved and very attractive folding globe in original condition with original accompaniments. The six gores that form the globe are held together by cords: by pulling on the sleeves that keep the cords together the globe assembles to show the whole world divided into five main regions of Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas and Australia.
