Description:
Kutztown, PA, 1890. Quarter roan over marbled boards measuring 8 x 6.25 inches and comprised of 73 pages of manuscript text (including a mixture of notes passed between friends on the verso of the final leaf and on the rear pastedown). Spine largely perished with boards and textblock held together by cords. Several leaves neatly excised towards rear. Containing notes from Fannie Hottenstein's courses in teacher training, the present volumes offer researchers a range of study topics, including the history of pedagogy and women's increasingly visible place in American education; the book also is a valuable resource for examining how educated young women were thinking through their own lives and roles -- as individuals and as a generation. Trained in one of the most educationally progressive states at the time, Fannie Hottenstein was one of a generation of women who could more widely dream about and pursue more independent lives than their matriarchs. Historically, Pennsylvania had been a vanguard for… Read More

Description:
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1964. First edition. Fine/Near Fine. A Fine copy Near Fine dust jacket. Jacket with very slight wear at the extremities, retaining the original price of $5.50. This collection of Raymond Chandler short stories from the 30s and early 40s, many from the famed Black Mask magazine, was released after his death. In fact, Chandler did not want the collection published during his lifetime because he had re-used many elements of these stories in his longer novels. In addition to the titular story, the collection includes tales such as The Man Who Liked Dogs, parts of which were featured in Farewell, My Lovely, and The Curtain, which was re-purposed in The Big Sleep and The Long Goodbye. "Raymond Chandler's pulp novelettes [stand high above the rest of the season], to some extent cannibalized in his novels but still important in their own right" (Contemporary New York Times review). Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

Description:
London: Macmillan, 1901. First UK edition. Near Fine. Original publisher's cloth binding with gilt to spine and front board. Top edge gilt. A Near Fine example retaining its brightness and shape; internally with some foxing to title page and preliminaries. Kim stands as a separate character from the other books that had made Kipling's name -- "'Not much of a story' may perhaps be the verdict of the ruthless boy reader who revels in the Jungle Book and Captains Courageous...Kim is, in fact and upon the surface, but an insignificant fragment of human history; a bit out of the biography of a little vagabond of Irish parentage, orphaned when a baby, and left to shift for himself in infinite India," wrote a contemporary reviewer for The Atlantic. That said, it is a book that more mature readers could connect with in the story of a boy growing into manhood, seeking out experiences and relationships to shape and define him. "Kim is a work of genius," that same Atlantic reviewer concludes, because it is… Read More

Bound by Bayntun-Riviere in full red calf, gilt rules on the boards, raised bands on the spine, morocco spine labels, marbled end papers and all edges gilt, cloth covers bound in at the rear. A very handsome production, likely mid-20th century. Expertly rebacked with the original spine laid down. Map with a short tear professionally closed. First issue with the following points: p.10 - "Bamamgwato"; p.122 3rd line up - "let twins to live"; p. 307 footnote, second to last line - "wrod." Ads dated 5 G. 8.85. One of approximately 1000 first issue copies. H. Rider Haggard's influential Victorian adventure tale. King Solomon's Mines follows the adventure of Sir Allan Quatermain, who ends up discovering the lost civilization of Kukuanaland. (Indeed, the book is thought to have been the inspiration for the entire genre of "Lost World" science fiction -- and influenced writers as diverse as HP Lovecraft and Michael Crichton.) Description:
London: George Harrap, 1932. First Thus. Limited to 570 copies signed by the illustrator, of which this is 522. Housed in the original slipcase with paper label to spine, and retaining the scarce glassine jacket, which is Near Fine on account of some chipping to bottom edges and offsetting to spine. Book in original vellum with gilt to exterior and pictorial endpapers; overall Fine inside and out. A pleasing copy. A delightful fairy tale told with all Ruskin's charm of style, his appreciation for mountain scenery, and with his usual insistence on drawing a moral. Yet the backstory to this particular tale has a special spark all its own, for it emerged from a challenge issued to Ruskin by the 12 year old daughter of friends, who "bade him write for her a fairy tale. He accepted, and after but two sittings presented her with this charming story. The incident also awakened in him a greater interest than at first appeared, for a few years later, that girl Euphemia "Effie" Grey became his wife" (Coe).… Read More

Description:
London: Burns & Oates, Ltd, 1908. First edition. Publishers red cloth, front cover ruled and lettered in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, plain endpapers. Spine ends a little worn, slight staining to upper cover . Quarto (9 7/16 x 6 3/4 inches; 240 x 171 mm.). Collating xiv, 78. Including monotone frontispiece and ten full- page monotone plates. Light marginal foxing, otherwise an excellent copy of this extremely unusual Louis Wain title. This is a fascinating little book with very unusual and atypical drawings by Louis Wain. The frontispiece The Wise Old Woman of the Wicklow Hills depicts a witch looking over her cauldron whilst two cats, one black and one white, look on... is at first glance more in the style of the Victorian artist, Sidney Sime. In fact throughout this volume only one of the eleven illustrations Little Fiss and the Wicked Enchanted Bull (facing page 40) is remotely similar to the Louis Wain that we all love, admire and enjoy. Description:
[London]: A. Moore near St. Paul's, 1759. First edition. Bound in modern marbled wrappers with label to front. Measuring 195 x 155mm and collating complete: 15, [1, blank]. A surprisingly fresh and unmarked copy of this satirical piece centered on courtesan Kitty Fisher, who was beginning her career rise to fame. Scarce institutionally and in trade, ESTC reports only 8 copies in libraries. In the last 90 years it has appeared only once at auction, with this being the only example on the market. Kitty Fisher would eventually rise to become one of "the most celebrated women" in her field, ranking in Harris' List of Covent Garden Ladies alongside "Covent Garden Characters and Reigning Celebrities." The premier 18th century guide to London's sex trade, Harris' List offered readers the names, biographies, locations, prices, and specialties of the city's most infamous sex workers. For women hoping to maintain clientele, being included was of importance. For potential patrons, it was a source for… Read More

Description:
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1925. First edition. Near Fine. A Near Fine copy of the book that suffers from light to moderate foxing throughout (and on the front cover illustration). Original black cloth with mounted cover illustration and pictorial endpapers. Complete with the full complement of illustrations by Maxfield Parrish, his last and most brilliant book illustration project. Oddly, the title page of this copy is printed out of register, so that the font and images are blurry. We have never seen a copy like this and suspect that it was an error caught very early on in the print run. Parrish worked for three years on the illustrations for the book, creating an elaborate model of the castle to use for his inspiration. In agreeing to work on the project, Parrish wrote: "You must understand all this layout to be in gorgeous color. The landscapes back of the figures in the cover lining - a very beautiful affair illuminated by a golden late afternoon sun: castles, waterfall, rocks and… Read More
