Publisher's cloth, decorated in blind and with gilt illustration on top cover; first and last few leaves browned, otherwise very good with the book label of J.D. Prince, Jr., and the ownership inscription of W.E. Phillips dated August, 1901. Tokyo: Kodansha, 1977. FIRST EDITION. Hundreds of color and black and white photographic illustrations. Publisher's cloth with Japanese letters embossed on front cover, silver lettering on spine, in the original dust jacket and preserved in the publisher's slipcase with the title on the top cover and spine. Like never opened, in absolutely perfect condition. First edition in English. The Katsura palace, which has been compared in cultural importance with the Parthenon, was the retreat of Japanese rulers from the seventeenth century. It is a stunning imperial villa with exquisite gardens, and we are treated to a visual tour through the beautiful photographs of Takeshi Nishikawa (b. 1925). The work includes architectural drawings as well as a history of the buildings and grounds written by Akira Naito (b. 1932), a professor of architecture at Nagoya Institute of Technology.

Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1909. FIRST EDITION. With 1 plate (portrait of Lord Kelvin). Original printed wrappers; unopened. First edition of the first Kelvin lecture given by Thompson on April 30, 1908. Following the death of Lord Kelvin, (1824-1907), the Kelvin Memorial Committee of the Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE) recommended the establishment of a lecture series to be delivered annually. Thompson was president of the IEE at the time (Kelvin was president on three separate occasions, the third being at the time of his death). Some of the most distinguished British scientists have given the lecture, which is still given annually. Thompson gives a riveting talk on Kelvin's life and accomplishments.The following year, Thompson (1851-1916) published a two-volume biography of Kelvin. Of interest, Thompson himself has a lecture series named after him.

Kyoto, 1690. Calligraphic scroll (20 x 650 cm) in Japanese. With 33 brilliant illustrations, ten in color. Title inscription at beginning and signature of scribe at end. Enclosed in a handsome paulownia wood box certified with seal and signature inside top cover by Sigemi Komatsu, an expert in "old writing." In excellent condition, with only two small marginal repairs and light discoloration at the beginning of the scroll.

The title not only describes the content of the poems, but also the sometimes unusual form of the printing on each page. Laing (b. 1927) studied medicine at Glasgow University, practicing as a physician at the Glasgow Royal Mental Hospital and serving as a psychiatrist in the British army before going into private practice.

First edition. One of Williams' favorite works, he described the writing of it as follows: "I decided that I would write something every day, without missing one day, for a year. I'd write nothing planned but take up a pencil, put the paper before me, and write anything that came to me head . . . Not a word was to be changed. I didn't change any, but I did tear up some of the stuff." Wallace, A4.

A beautiful crisp copy from the remarkable Sattler collection. Signed first edition, as stated, illustrated by Herbert L. Fink. "To Martha, Best Wishes. John Gardner March 12, 1981." Weaving magical realism with horror and romance, King's "is a collection which gives us, as a prism might, the spectrum of Gardner's vision from the infra red of his Gothic horrors to the purple poses of his romantic realism," (nytimes.com). John Champlin Gardner Jr. (1933-1982) was an American author known for his novel Grendel, a retelling of Beowulf told from the monster's point of view. He was also an essayist, literary critic, and university professor.
