London: George Routledge & Co., 1850. Half-calf and marbled boards, edges sprinkled; end-papers lightly spotted. Second English edition of the author's first novel, the tale of a journey to Africa where our hero discovers a mythical country, and even marries an African princess. A significant portion focuses on Romer's medical studies as well as his experiences as a ship doctor. An extremely popular work, it went through nine editions between 1849 and 1900. Mayo (1812-95) studied medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York City. Boston: The Four Seas Company, 1920. FIRST EDITION. Original printed boards, lightly browned, with fragments of the original fragile dust-jacket laid in. Ownership inscription to fly-leaf. First edition. One of Williams' favorite works, he described the writing of it as follows: "I decided that I would write something every day, without missing one day, for a year. I'd write nothing planned but take up a pencil, put the paper before me, and write anything that came to me head . . . Not a word was to be changed. I didn't change any, but I did tear up some of the stuff." Wallace, A4.
