Description:
New York: Bloomsbury, 2005. 1st Printing. Trade Paperback. Very Good. 83x11x123. 1st printing. Faint edge wear. 2005 Trade Paperback. 224 pp. Renowned novelist James Brown's searing memoir is a wrenching yet often wry chronicle of loss and reaffirmation written in response to a life marked by alcohol and drug abuse; mental illness; economic hardship; and the suicides of his two siblings. Harrowing, brutally honest, and no-holds-barred, The L.A. Diaries unveils Brown's struggle for survival, mining his perilous past to present the inspiring story of his redemption. Beautifully written, moving, and lined with dark humour, these twelve interconnected confessional chapters address personal failure; heartbreak; the trials of writing for Hollywood; and the life-shattering events that finally convinced him he must 'change or die'.

Tear to jacket spine, front jacket flap price-clipped. 1978 Large Hardcover. 334 pp. A book of dissertations by a number of Italian scholars, La Belle Epoque should be read once one has gotten a good feel of the period from another book like "Paris in the Nineties" by Rudolph or "Edwardian England" by Pearson or one else might find themselves confused after finishing the first two chapters due to the remainder of the book focusing on the psychological aspects and arts of the period. The upside of this book is that while it focuses mainly on France, and then Edwardian England, it includes tidbits on fin de siecle Austria, Germany, Italy and even Romania, as well as a calendar of newsworthy events from the years 1900-1914 culled from newspapers of the era.

Minor general wear. 2000 Soft Cover. xix, 340 pp. On one level, Peter Moogk's latest book, La Nouvelle France: The Making of French Canada—A Cultural History, is a candid exploration of the troubled historical relationship that exists between the inhabitants of French- and English- speaking Canada. At the same time, it is a long- overdue study of the colonial social institutions, values, and experiences that shaped modern French Canada. Moogk draws on a rich body of evidence—literature; statistical studies; government, legal, and private documents in France, Britain, and North America— and traces the roots of the Anglo-French cultural struggle to the seventeenth century.
