Description:
Leiden: Isaac Severinus, 1712. Full Morocco. Very Good. A large paper edition of this classic on self-defense and mano a mano combat. 4to. 27 by 21.5 cm. Title, [2], 71 copper engraved plates, followed by five folding sheets, printing only on rectos, with explanations of the plates -- the purpose of the folds is to allow for the explanations to jut out and thus be readable while viewing the particular plate(s). The work was first published in 1674 in French. This edition is particularly desirable because of its being large paper. (We could find no copies, in book form, of this edition on OCLC, and only a single copy of an earlier edition in French, at the British Library.) Bound in an elaborately decorated Baroque ornamented, or Grolieresque, full crimson crushed morocco binding by Morley Brothers of Oxford. The binding decoration includes interlocking strap work in olive, green and black morocco, gilt dots, gilt floral vine ornamentation and ornamental scrolls, panelled-like turn-ins, etc. With silk… Read More

Description:
Napoli (Naples): Tipografia Floriana, 1846. 1st Edition thus. Quarter Calf. Good Plus. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 787 pp. + 11 color plates of soldiers and fighters and 4 steel engravings of panoramas or views. Comprehensive history of Algeria, from Ancient Carthage to the then present of French control. Binding and text blocks are tight. Some occasional foxing, and on some pages it is considerable, as inevitable given the paper stock used. The costume color plates, though, are attractive and mostly clean, albeit their paper is toned a bit. Red calf spine and boards have a fair amount of rubbing, scuffing and wear, with some rawness on spine extremities. Overall better than a good copy.

Description:
Paris: Chez Deroy, 1796. Quarter Calf, Speckled Boards. Very Good. 4to. 25.5 by 20 cm. Two frontises (one with engraving, other hand-colored plate), title, [2], 221, [3] pp. With 50 hand-colored aquatint plates, the most exciting not merely costume but showing military and equestrians on move or in action. (And first frontis is B/W.) Colas 1298. The timing of the publication was significant -- it was the fourth year of the Directoire, and so noted on the title. Revolutionary France drew inspiration from Ancient Rome in terms of its republicanism, its muscular outlook, and its aesthetics (although this was a trend that certainly predated the Revolution). Note that this work is encountered without coloring most often. Moderate wear to the binding, and scattered light foxing and soiling within.

Description:
London, 1875. Limited Edition. Half Morocco, marbled boards. Very Good. Scarce, with no copies located on OCLC First Search, not in the BNF, etc. as might be expected from a 19th century "Baedeker" of Brussels' houses of ill-repute. Supposedly an 1875 reprint of an 1830 pamphlet from Anvers (Antwerp), we would stress we could find no other copies of either! No. 68 of 100 limitation. 12mo. 16.5 by 11 cm. 40 pp. From the pamphlet one can infer that to the clientele (or those who would turn to such a pamphlet), copulation was just a small part of the bordello experience, for here we learn about the decor, the atmosphere, the pretensions, even the sometimes theatrical resume, of the prostitutes. Indeed, there would seem to be some affinity between the experience these johns sought and Japanese men who patronized Geishas. As to why there would have been a reprint of such a guide 45 years later and when its information would have been wildly out-of-date or obsolete, we would… Read More

The aquarelles and drawings used for the work were four years in the making. Description:
Firenze: Il Moücke, Stampatore dell'Institute de' Nobili, 1765. First Edition. Wraps. Very Good. Extremely scarce, with only copy found on OCLC First Search at the Library of Congress. 4to. 26.5 by 20.5 cm. LIX, [2] pp. The art exhibit and the one act drama were arranged by, and meant to celebrate, the Instutito de' Nobili, created in 1761, according to introductory remarks in the book. Listed are its members, a few of the surnames remain well-known for one reason or another (Salviati, Guicciardini, Strozzi). The play expands upon, or adapts, a few scenes from the Aeniad of Virgil, and it would seem to us that the Instituto was intent on supporting and perpetuating a traditional elevated form of drama based on the "classics." Wraps a later gilt and rust red damask paper. Edge of wraps soiled.

Paris: H. Piazza. Presse de Jacoub, Aulard & Cie., 1919. First Limited Edition . Full Morocco, with slipcase. Very Good . No. 520 of 1,500. 4to, 12 by 9 inches, 31 by 24 cm. ix, 125, [1] pp. With 24 tipped-in color plates, and additional black and white drawings interspersed through text. Rubbing to the joints, and a few rubbed/raw spots on spine, which is also slightly darkened. Original wraps bound in, with a short closed tear to bottom edge of this front cover. One tissue guard had an ugly tape repair which left a stain on the tissue guard, the neighboring text page and a plate. A few creases to the tissue guards, which in addition to their protective function, carried caption text. Typical wear to slipcase, which has marbled pastedowns on all sides. This remains solid and attractive. Within the book, minor occasional soiling (beside the tape shadow spoken of already), but overall, a clean, beautiful copy.

Paris: H. Floury, 1912. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Hansi and Victor Huen. Folio, 35 by 28.5 cm. 104 pp., with color lithographic illustrations on virtually every page, often with the illustration an underlay, in part or whole, to the text, and some illustrations on two pages. While a children's book, this was written when Alsace and Lorraine were a part of Germany, having been ceded by France as the settlement following France's humiliating defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 to 1871, and so Hansi's book was very much a political statement of allegiance to France, which at the time of his writing this was on the verge of entering World War One against Germany, and three years after the publication of this copy, France would regain Alsace. This and Hansi's many other books make him an unique and most beloved writer/illustrator of Alsace and France in general, and his magical illustrations convey the values of Alsatian folk art in their color and simplicity. Paris: Editions Nilsson, 1922. First Edition. Wraps housed in a portfolio. Very Good. 10 Fascicules housed in a portfolio folder. With 120 color pochoir plates, each measuring 39 by 28 cm, or 14.4 by 11 inches. The fascicules are devoted to different historic eras, and within, the plates are devoted to different aspects of clothing. All the fascicules have bright, lively illustrations on their covers which are among the most appealing illustrations in the series, followed by eight pages of text and then 12 plates, and the plates themselves have somewhat detailed captions describing the items depicted, thus making this an excellent visual reference as well as a hedonistic feast for the eyes for those enraptured by costume. Some fraying of the blue cloth of the outer portfolio. The leaves within are toned more heavily around the edges. A few chips. One fascicule has wraps torn at the spine line. Still, complete and mostly clean and fresh.

Description:
Paris: Chez Levrault, Schoell et Cie. (L'Imprimerie de P. Didot L'Aine), 1805. Full Morocco. Very Good Minus. 8vo. 225 pp. With four plates and eight vignette illustrations, two each at the beginning of each of the four "chants", all hand-colored sensitively. These are by Catel and engraved by Buchorn, Guttenberg, Halderwang et Mayer. Cohen-de Ricci 279. An updated adaptation of Virgil's masterpiece. The contemporary hand-coloring sets this copy apart from others of this work. The soft coloring -- in the spirit of Fragonard or Boucher -- perfectly suits the bucolic subject matter. Red morocco boards are particularly thick, rendering a box-like solidity to the book as an object, which is further enhanced with gilt work along edges. Light foxing throughout but generally not affecting significantly the plate and illustration pages, thus suggesting that it is very much a function of the acidity of the paper used for the text proper.
