AMSTERDAM: MARC-MICHEL REY, 1769 Complete in 2 volumes bound in one in contemporary full leather binding. Charles Bonnet was born and lived in Switzerland - his profession was law but his interest was in natural science. He established the principle of 'parthenogenesis' in aphids through some early research. In this, his principle later work, he "advocates the view that the female body carries all future generations in miniature form. He believed that these so-called Homunculi would survive even the most severe catastrophes, like the Flood." (courtesy of whonamedit). This copy is a first edition. The binding, which has a red title label, raised bands outlined in gilt with gilt decorations to the spine and is full leather, is worn with splitting at the joints and wear to edges and corners. Amsterdam: Abraham Wolfgang, 1688 A fair copy of the first French edition of Richard Blome's guide to British interests in North America with 6 (of 7) folding maps. The 1st edition was in English and published a year previously. The maps for the French edition were redrawn close copies of those in the English edition, and 4 of the maps in this copy have Robert Morden's name on them. The guide is a nice pocket size and was popular, however, some of the mapping is a little strange - the map of New York is notable in that Manhattan is shown as a peninsula not an island. This copy is missing the map of the Mid-Atlantic States - "Nouvelle Carte de la Pensylvanie Maryland, Virginie et Nouvelle Iarsey". The book is in contemporary full leather which is very worn with cracked hinges and a delaminating spine. Paris : H Piazza, 1919 A near fine copy of the French edition of East of the Sun and West of the Moon - Contes Anciens du Nord, limited to 1,500 copies of which this is no. 1370, printed on 12 November 1919. Printed on Japan paper with red and black title page and 24 colour plates by Kay Nielsen. The binding is half leather with marbled boards. The spine has raised bands, stamped designs in the compartments and title label. The spine is slightly darkened and the corners have light turning. Endpapers are marbled with a silvery sheen. What looks like the front cover of the original wrap with gilt and red decoration is bound in and precedes the half title. Contents with preface, text and 24 plates pasted to their mounts and with captioned tissue guards. Contents listing at the rear. Each story has a title in red and a decorative initial capital. PARIS : A Quantin , 1882 A very good copy in contemporary half leather binding with raised bands to spine and marbled boards combining the first edition of L'Eventail published in 1882 with the first edition of L'Ombrelle, Le Gant, Le Manchon, published in 1883. With 4 beautiful colour printed full page illustrations. Illustrated throughout by Paul Avril with numerous illustrations in tints and decorative borders. High quality paper with gilt to top edges and remaining edges untrimmed. The binding has some scuffing to the spine bands edges and corners but is otherwise in very good condition. With matching marbled endpapers. Contents in excellent condition. Very occasional spotting and some offsetting but looks largely unread.

London: James Nelson & Co, 1860 A very good copy of the 3rd edition with 42 hand coloured plates. This copy has been rebound in plain buckram cloth with gilt titles to spine, and the endpapers have been replaced. The binding is sound and clean with some darkening to the spine and light corner wear. Contents: half title; title; contents and plate listings xii; introduction 2pp; text pp 3-211 with 42 plates; index pp 212-215. All the plates have tissue guards. Contents are in very good clean condition. The guard to plate 1 is torn and the bottom part is missing. Plate 13 has a wide gutter so the side edge is trimmed although the plant image is complete. There is some marking to the verso of p 215 (blank) and the occasional light mark or offsetting from the plates. The plates are clean and bright with the occasional stray paint spot or light mark.

London: L Reeve & Co.,, 1880 A very good copy of the 1st edition in the original cloth binding with 40 colour printed plates. The binding has the gilt Lovell Reeve design to the front board and gilt titles to the spine. It is slightly shaken (stitching visible internally at pp 65 and 192) with wear to edges and to corners. The original floral design endpapers are present - there is a small hole at the front endpaper joint and both free endpapers are slightly browned. Contents: half title; frontispiece; title page; description of the illustrations and introduction xxvii; text pp 1-323; index 324-344; times of appearance 345-357; additions and corrections 358; index 359-367. Contents in very good clean condition. All the plates are tissue-guarded. There is the very occasional mark, and light toning at the page edges.

LONDON: L REEVE & CO., 1878 Parts III, IV and V of this rare work as issued in the publisher's paper wraps. With 24 (8 per part) colour printed plates from drawings by Eleonora Wilson. The whole work has 40 plates. Part III has pages 113-176, IV 177-240, and V 241-367 including the index to the whole work and with a publisher's catalogue. The text pages are largely unopened. The wraps are understandably worn and the wrap for part V is disintegrating. Internally there is some initial spotting to the first text page or so in each part but otherwise it is clean. The plates are clean and bright. Part III is dated 1878, and Parts IV and V 1879. An interesting insight into how the work was published.

London: S W Partridge & Co Ltd, 1914 A very good copy in the original cloth binding with gilt and black titles and illustrations to front board and gilt titles and illustration to spine. Contents with colour frontispiece and 5 further colour plates. The binding is bright with wear to the top corner of the front board (slight cloth loss); a small bump to the bottom corner of the front board and light wear to spine ends. The back board is lightly faded close to the spine and has light corner wear. Endpapers are clean and there is an inscription dated Xmas 1914 to the verso of the frontispiece. Contents clean and bright with the odd mark: side margin p 11; side margin pp 64/5; bottom and side margin p 126/7; and side margin p 350.

London : Herbert Jenkins Limited, 1936 A good to very good copy of the 1st UK edition, in good wrapper priced at 7/6 on the spine. The plum cloth binding has black titles to front board and spine and is in clean sound condition. It has light fading to edges and some pulling to spine ends. Light wear to corners. Contents complete with 8 pp of adverts at the rear. It is very clean internally. Contents slight shaken with a couple of spots to foredge and some spotting at the top page edge occasionally visible internally. A few spots at the title page. A small mark in the top margin affecting pp 44-46 and some browning in the gutter at p289. Some top page corners have been turned over at some point and now have a slight crease. The wrap is clean with a lot of edge wear including some loss around the spine folds, principally affecting the front panel - and a little loss at the flap folds. Paris : Claude Barbin , 1695 A fair to good set in 2 volumes, in contemporary full leather binding.M Jean de la Quintinye was trained as a lawyer, but is famed for his skills in kitchen gardening. He was commissioned by Louis XIV to create a new kitchen garden for Versailles - which can still be visited today. He is said to be the first gardener to advocate pruning young fruit trees hard to ensure better growth and fruiting for the future. This set is in contemporary speckled calf bindings with raised bands and gilt decoration and titles to spines. The bindings are sound but worn, with wear to corners, edges and the top and bottom of the spines. The gilt is particularly worn on Vol I. Vol II has some cracking to the top of the front joint. Both have some library numbers to the front pastedowns and a small early ink signature to the fep. Both have a round stamp of the 'Societe de Lecture de Geneve' to the title page. Paris: Garnier Freres, Libraires-editeurs Complete in one volume - undated but 1860 - in full morocco binding. Aeg. With 17 full page black and white plates, decorative title page, vignette title page and numerous illustrations in the text. The binding has gilt compartments and title to spine and blind tooling to boards. The original page marker is present. With fabric endpapers. The binding is sound but has some war to top and bottom of spine and joints, and a little light scuffing to boards. Slight bumping to corners. The contents are exceptionally clean. The plate listed at page 144 is bound at the front. The plate at page 840 has offset to the opposing text. There is spotting to blank preliminaries and end leaves.

Autrecht: Etienne Neaulme, 1736 An extremely scarce early printing of Vol I of Gueullette's 'Les Sultanes de Guzarate' - published in Autrecht in 1736 in 2 volumes. In contemporary full mottled calf binding with raised bands to spine, extensive gilt tooled decoration and red title label. The boards have gilt decoration to borders. Page edges are red. The boards have some scuffing and wear - mainly to corners, which are also bumped. Internally, the first blank has an ink signature from 1769. Contents: title page in red and black inks; 'Avis au Lecteur' 18pp; text pp 1-430. With decorative headpieces and initial capitals. There is the occasional mark eg to gutter of title page, but overall the contents are in very good clean condition.

Edinburgh: William Brown, 1885 A very good copy of the limited edition, reprinted in 1885 from the original edition of 1760 by William Brown. 110 copies were produced of which 100 were for sale, and this is numbered 83 with William Brown's initials. This edition has a preface which gives the historical context to the letter. It was apparently written at the request of an anonymous individual (who edited and published the letter in 1760) to ascertain the background to a lawsuit brought against the Earl of Morton by his vassals. Rev Hepburn was the Minister of Birsay and therefore considered well placed to give a picture of local life and the causes of poverty in the area. Rev Hepburn was the Minister of Birsay and therefore considered well placed to give a picture of local life and the causes of poverty in the area. The binding is probably later 1800's and has a very rubbed spine with gilt titles. Spine ends are frayed. There is similar wear to corners. Boards clean. The endpapers are contemporary with the binding and have the decorative bookplate of John Davie Manson Robertson to the front pastedown. There is an initial blank and several end blank leaves. Top page edges gilted. Contents: title (with Rev Hepburn's name written in in pencil); advertisement by the Editor pp 3-6; and text pp 7-44 - Finis. LONDON : John White, 1807 A very good copy of Rousseau's Letters translated and explained by Professor Thomas Martyn, 7th corrected and improved edition bound with Thirty-Eight plates, also by Thomas Martyn, 1794. In newer half leather binding with title label to spine and marbled boards. Page edges marbled. Letters is 503 pp plus index sections, with folding table outlining Linnaeus' system. The Thiry-Eight plates, a complete work in itself with separate title page, but prepared to link with the Letters, is 72 pp with 38 beautiful hand coloured plates by Nodder. The binding is in very good condition with a little scuffing to the spine. The contents are generally in very good condition with nice clean text pages. The plates are clean and brightly coloured. There is a small stain which affects the bottom left hand corner of plates 36-8, not affecting images.

London: John Murray , 1879 A good copy of the 7th edition in the original decorative cloth binding with black and white frontispiece and numerous illustrations throughout. The binding is bright and clean. The spine is slightly darkened and there is wear to the top and bottom of the spine, together with edges and corners. Internally, the original endpapers are present - the front endpapers with a slight split beginning to appear at the joint. The contents are complete and in good to very good condition. There are some small edge tears - mostly to the top margin affecting the half title, frontispiece, title page and dedication. These have been repaired with archival paper tape. There is small loss to the side margin of page 31 where the book has been poorly opened - the text is not affected. Some top page corners have been turned over at some point. 32 pp publisher's catalogue dated September 1880 at the rear.

Dublin: G Perrin for S Price, W and H Whitestone, J Potts, T Walker, C Jenkin et al, 1780 A fair copy of the 1st Dublin edition of Uno von Troil's account of his visit to Iceland with Joseph Banks and Dr Solander in 1772. It was first published in Uppsala in 1777 and the English version is taken from the German translation of 1779. Dr Von Troil studied divinity, oriental and northern languages and antiquities. He was introduced to Dr Banks when he was staying in England. The book is in the form of correspondence and contains a wealth of observation from the visit. It is in a contemporary full calf binding with gilt lined raised bands to the spine and red title label. There is leather loss to the spine which has also lost the head and tail band. The front board has a bumped top corner and a paler section towards the bottom of the board. There are a couple of scuffed areas which might have been wormed at one point. Bottom corner turned. With tissue-guarded frontispiece and endpapers listing the Standard Novels. The binding is bright and clean. There is some wear at splitting at the spine ends and the beginning of splitting at the front joint. The corners are bumped and there is some scuffing to the boards. Internally, the endpapers are clean with an ownership signature to the front pastedown. Contents with frontispiece; title; preface to first and second editions (to p xi) text 394 pp; excerpt from the Morning Herald of 6.10.1849 4pp. The stitching is a little wobbly in a couple of places, and there is some splitting at the rear endpaper joint, but the contents are generally clean and sound. Part of the Told to the Children series - undated but circa 1910. With colour frontispiece and 7 further colour plates of 'little actors from photographs'. The binding has fading to spine and board edges together with a little pulling to the spine. Many text pages are unopened. One play (Uncle Tom's Cabin) has been read and occasionally annotated in pencil. Occasional spotting but generally clean.

London: Geoffrey Bles, 1934 A good copy of the 1st edition, lacking the wrapper but internally in very good clean condition. A fascinating attempt to assemble and publish a scientific study into the then early reports of a monster in Loch Ness. Illustrated with sketches, by witnesses and by Gould from witness accounts, and with photographs taken at the time. The yellow cloth binding has red titles to spine and front board. There is fading and some mottling to board edges, the bottom part of the spine and the lower half of the back board, which also has a small dark mark. The top corner of the back board is bumped and the other corners have a degree of turning. The top spine end is lightly pulled and the bottom spine end has a small cloth tear. Internally the pastedown endpapers are illustrated with a map of Loch Ness. Contents are complete and very clean with the occasional small mark and some slight foxing on p 198.
