New York: The Century Cco., 1891. Book. Illus. by 2 maps, nixcely illustrated with mostly text sketches. Very Good. Cloth. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. This is Rockhill's first trip from Peking, subtitled Notes of a Journey Through China, Mongolia and Tibet. He was sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution on both trips at a time when the Chinese were especially suspicious of British travellers coming up from India into Tibet. So Rockhill must have established his friendly credentials from four years residence in Peking. He was a fine American Orientalist (American Travellers Abroad R 49). Very good original brown cloth with a leather title label and bright gilt letters on the unfaded spine. Only a hint of edge wear. Inside, near fine with no foxing or browning. Very clean and tight. .

Original green cloth with a horned beast in gilt on the front board. A gilt title on the spine which is in poor condition. Much wear on the edges and corners small pieces missing from the head and tail of the spine, with two rips in the cloth hinges. Ex-library from the Transvaal Dept of Agriculture with stamps on the title page. But the pages and plates are clean. Fine accounts of rigorous expeditions into remote Tibet. A SCARCE book. .

Boston: Wright , 1849. Book. Very Good. Decorative Cloth. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Handsome original brown cloth with very little edgewear, and bright gilt title and decoration on the spine, an Indian couple in gilt on the front board. Pages 288. Over 120 woodcuts, including full page costume plates. This was an early American book about India, quite popular because of the illustrations, and the author sold many as a spinoff from his busy lecture tours. The last chapter is a 20 page essay on Superstitions of the Ashantees (now Ghana, in West Africa). Although fairly easy to find this book, most are badly foxed or browned inside. This one is very clean and tight, with slight deterioration only on the preliminary pages before and after the text block, which is completely free of stains or foxing. No prior owner marks, protected in a mylar, clear dustjacket. Images available on request..

A lad cooking on a campfire in color on the front yellow board, titles on the front and unfaded spine in black. Inside, very clean and tight with no prior owner marks, no stains or browning. Endpaper illustrations of boy and girl in a canoe with an antique biplane overhead. No other date than the 1873 copyright, so not possible to know if this is later. Slight wear at the upper corner of the front board and spine ends. A rather scarce teen adventure story. Six pages publisher ads at rear, undated. .

An exceptional copy in a later, fine English binding of 1/2 red morocco leather with red cloth boards with wear only at the bottom corners. Raised bands flanked by gilt and bright gilt title on the spine, no wear at the spine ends. Inside, a beautiful book, with no foxing or browning. The plates are all excellent. Full brown morocco with raised bands and fresh gilt title on the spine. Gilt lines near the edges on both boards, and triple gilt dentille lines on the inside of both boards. Marbled endpapers. No prior owner marks, no foxing or browning on the high quality handmade paper. Translator from the fFrench is unknown. Protected in a hand-marbled slipcase. Solid hinges and no wear..

The author , long resident in Sierra Leone, was an observant Colonial and Garrison Chaplain in Sierra Leone. A very pretty 2 volumes in dark blue morocco, with marbled boards. The spines have raised hands, gilt panel decoration and bright titles. This is a new, British , high quality binding. Inside is age toned but pages are surprisingly clean with no foxing or browning. An ex-library set, with a few pages so marked. But with a new binding of a scarce book, this is a handsome value. None at auction since 1988. Hess-Coger 7613.

Near Fine. 3/4 Leather. 2nd Edition. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Quite a remarkable copy, in 3/4 deep red morocco, gilt double lines along the edges, raised bands on the spine, gilt art deco flowers in the blocks between the raised bands and brown marbled boardswith matching marbled endpapers. Slight wear at two corners. Top edge gilt. In addition to the biography, there is a listing of about 1000 portraits executed by Stuart including their whereabouts as of 1879. Very clean and tight inside, nearly as new. No prior owner marks, no stains or age toning. There is no attribution for this fine binding which I suspect was a publisher's special, limited copy. .

London: The Art Journal Office, 1882. Book. Illus. by frontispiece engraving of Bewick and 100 Bewick woodcuts. Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Original publisher brown cloth with a lighter brown panel on the front cover that includes the title and a Bewick bird on a branch. Corners bumped, spine ends worn, spine darkened with the gilt from the title worn off. Back hinge has a three inch tear near the bottom, but hinges for this large book are solid. The publisher made two sizes of this production, and this is the large paper edition of which only 75 copies were made, this being number 42. Title continues, "with an Account of His Career and Achievements in Art , with a Notice of the Works of John Bewick". Exceptionally clean inside. Book plate of Edward Bellamy, and no other prior owner marks. .

Subtitle, "Being Notes Collected During three Years' Residence and Travels in that Country". Big game hunting, remote travel, culture and tribes, this was an important, early book on mid 19th Century Ethiopia, and very readable. Pages 350 plus 10 pages publisher ads, and vol 2 pages 355 plus 4 pages publ ads. Original blind stamped cloth, Victorian binding with faded gilt tribesmen on the bottom of the spines, with gilt titles. Tight , solid set, but some foxing inside. Protected in clear, mylar dustjackets..

A cultural, artistic history of our country with profuse illustrations , compiled from the collections of the etropolitan Museum of Art and other sources by the author, who was Editor of Pubications at the Museum at that time. Original red cloth with no edge wear to both volumes. bright titles on the spine and insides are clean and tight. No smudges, browning or prior owner marks. Volume one does not have a dust jacket. Volume two has a good dj, worn, with a piece missing from the top of the spine. A tear is repaired on the verso. A very readable, optomistic history from just after WW Two. The publisher's flimsy slipcase is in remarkably good condition with edge wear. Pages 573 and 503.
