Description:
San Francisco: Bill Graham, 1976. Very good. 1st printing. Original poster (20 1/2" X 28"), wavey (not hard) creases from being rolled, else very good. The grand finale of their farewell tour, in a concert called The Last Waltz, at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom, Thanksgiving Day, 1976. Guests included Van Morrison, Emmylou Harris, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and Neil Diamond. The event became a 1978 UA film (same name) directed by Martin Scorsese. The last copy we tracked at auction did $239, HA, in 2018. Sellers who don't have one for sale say it's only worth $50. We point out that when we don't have one for sale, it's only $25.

Description:
Paris: Dumont, 1842. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Le Chevalier d'Harmental unleashed Dumaspalooza, his towering and best-selling historical romances (romans d'or). It was the first of Dumas' novels researched by Maquet (you can talk about the miracle, but you never talk about the angel). Here's the history. In 1838 Dumas serialized, and then published, his first novel, Le Capitaine Paul, to temperate notice, followed later that year by Acté, which was much better written, but mistakenly set in ancient Rome, and published during an apathy for the ancients following the Roman revival. For 3 years he pressed on, sharpened his skills, perfected his craft, surmised the intricacies of historical romance, and intuited the preferences of his readers, then unified all 4 into a new ritual of high art, exploding on the scene with this novel, the first coupling of an historical romance with a cloak and dagger thriller. It's set (1718), in the midst of The Cellamare Conspiracy, a critical pivot in…

Description:
Brussels: Méline, 1847. First Edition. Half calf. Very good. 10 vols. 1st edition (?), maybe preceded by Cadot's Paris edition (maybe not), and parallel to the Brussels editions of Lebégue's and Muquardt. The timing is close and Munro only addresses his guess towards the first volume published, not the last. He lists Lebégue's edition before Méline's based on the former having 3 vols. (of the 10) dated 1846, versus Méline's, which has 2 vols. so dated. But digging a little deeper than the superficial, his chronology is reversible. The 3 Lebégue volumes dated 1846, have 354 total pages in 24mo. whereas the 2 Méline volsumes dated 1846 have 464 total pages in 16mo. so more of the novel's text is dated 1846 in Méline's edition compared to Lebégue's (the same relationship also applies to the edition of Muquardt). Further, Munro notes 2 states of Méline's imprint, but the books are without textual differences, and there is no priority between them. Half calf, uncut, very good condition, and…

Description:
Paris: Hyppolyte Souverain, 1845. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. 2 vols. 1st edition (the authentic Paris 1st printing) probably preceded by the pirated Brussels editions, and that is as was usual with Dumas, but what is not usual is that, in this case, the Brussels editions are dated prior to the 1845 serialization in La Nord, so from what source the Brussels editions were copied is unknown, and because of that, valid questions remain about the accuracy of their dates of issue (whether the title page dates are accurate), and of Muro's priority (Alexandre Dumas Pere. A Bibliography of Works Published in French). Modern half oasis, marbled boards by Yves Rameau, small oval stamp of Cercles des Proceens in a few places, minor flaws to margins, else a near fine set. RBH lists 2 sales at auction, Munro found the one listed in his bibliography, but my search of OCLC did not locate a single copy in any National or University Library, so our set makes 4, and yes, there will be another one out there…

Description:
Paris: Le Siècle, 1851. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 2 vols. 1st complete (?) issue, reprinting the serializations of The Three Musketeers and Twenty Years After (pre-originals) in the newspaper Le Siècle and printing here first with them, The Viscount of Bragelonne (The Man in the Iron Mask). This is the 3 novels issued together and simultaneously, for what seems to have been the first time, or at least a very early issue (not listed by Munro in the Dumas bibliography). This publication of the trilogy in Le Siècle was projected to be part of a larger project to publish a run of Dumas' major romances up until that time. Contemporary boards, rebacked with new spines of old paper, contemporary cloth labels laid down. Very good.

Description:
Brussels: Société belge de librairie Hauman, 1843. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 13 vols. in 3 (the epilogue is vol. XIII), as issued. 1st edition (in French) with the vital 1842-1843 dates and 69,2% of it published in 1843, parallel with the edition from Hen and Lebégue (see previous). 19th century half white cloth (untitled on spines), marbled boards, bookplates of Alexander Max Vallas in each volume, a very good set, complete with half-titles. The original serialization of Les Mystères de Paris' was in a newspaper, Journal des Débats, from Jun. 19, 1842, to Oct. 15, 1843. The first 3 Brussels book editions (from Hen/Lebègue, Hauman, and Jamar) and the first Paris book edition (from Gosselin, with its many fake title pages alleging numerous reprintings) were all copied (typeset) from the journal's installments starting in 1842 and then published in multiple volumes, one at a time, as soon as enough journal issues had been released with adequate text to make up a small volume's…

Description:
Brussels: Jamar, 1843. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. The Mysteries of Paris was a gigantic ingenuity, the steamy, tightly plotted harbinger of all noir, the first crime novel to combine multiple characters from all levels of urban society, the earliest mystery thriller developed to this degree, nearly the first detective novel, and the first to exploit the rewards of newspaper serialization (in Journal des Débats). Further, it was the first successful use of the novel for propaganda directed at the plight of the poor, causing such an uproar that it forced the French government to pass helpful legislation, and it lit a fire that became the 1848 revolution (prompting the 2nd republic), it established the notion of spotlight that produced the Uncle Tom's Cabin effect, and one of the book's concepts was a powerful literary model, because it reached into the 20th century as the origin of our modern, metropolitan superhero. Sue's historic prototype is Rodolphe, Prince of Gerolstein, a 19th century…

Description:
Brussels: Alph. Lebègue, 1844. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 5 vols. in 2. 1st edition (published by Lebègue), 1st issue (in 18mo.). Undoubtedly the real 1st edition, listed first by Munro (Alexandre Dumas Pere. A Bibliography of Works Published in French), its priority undisputed by anyone credible, and preceding all other 1844 editions, including those from Meline, Muquardt, 3 editions from Librairie Hauman, Lebègue's reissue in 24mo., and Baudry's 1844 Paris edition (issued last of all the 1844 editions and the most common). Contemporary half calf, some rubbing and wear, joints strengthened, else very good, and complete with all 5 half-titles. Collation: [1]-181, [1 blank]. [1]- 172. [1]-171, [1 blank]. [1]-163.[1 blank]. [1]-223, [1 blank] pp. Fine half morocco and wood veneer case. A scream out loud unearthing, rare by any criterion, and read the next sentence slowly.
