Description:
Lyon,: Daudet, rue Merciere,, 1748.. 530 by 730mm. (20.75 by 28.75 inches).. Engraved map, border text on the sides, some original outline colour, top right corner missing and affecting the text, skilfuly repaired. The map covers the entire Asian continent, stretching from Africa and the Mediterranean in the west to the Bering Sea in the east, and north to south from the island of Nova Zembla to Java and New Guinea. The title clarifies that the names on the map are those established by the Spanish, the Portuguese, the French, and the Dutch. The border text provides descriptions derived from 'Le Grand Dictionnaire Géographique Et Critique' published by de la Martinière in 1738. Interestingly, the sea between Japan and Korea is here identified in favour of Korea (Mer de Corée), as opposed to 'East Sea' or the 'Sea of Japan'. The first trace of the 'Sea of Korea' appears on the 1615 map of Asia by Godinho de Eredia, a Malayan-Portuguese cartographer and mathematician. Later on, Dudley, Bowen, and… Read More

[Paris,: chez les auteurs, Boudet],, 1750 [but 1757].. 544 by 769mm. (21.5 by 30.25 inches).. Engraved map with outline hand colour. Included in the 'Atlas Universel', a collection of 108 maps by Gilles (the father) and Didier (his son) Robert de Vaugondy, but published by Antoine Boudet in large and small paper editions. Boudet had first collaborated with the Robert de Vaugondys when in 1751 he had published Didier's 'Usages des Globes celestes et terrestes faits par ordre du roi', for which he was created 'geographe du roi'. Pedley describes Boudet as "enterprising and somewhat unscrupulous", and the publication of the 'Atlas Universel' was prolonged and controversial, explaining the disparity between the date engraved on the map of Japan, and its date of publication in the atlas. Boudet came under criticism for being involved in the publication of maps, since he was a bookseller not a geographer; for the quality of the first 17 maps, which were full of errors, and deemed unoriginal; and for not… Read More

[Paris,: C.F. Delamarche,, [after 1787].. 510 by 619mm. (20 by 24.25 inches).. Engraved map with full hand colour. Third issue of the map, included in the 'Atlas Universel', as published by Charles Francois Delamarche, who had bought the copperplates from Antoine Boudet in 1787. In this example, the date '1750' has been erased from the imprint in the cartouche, and Gilee Robert de Vaugondy's status reduced to 'Geographe' from Geographe du Roi. The 'Atlas 'Universel' was originally a collection of 108 maps by Gilles (the father) and Didier (his son) Robert de Vaugondy, but published by Antoine Boudet in large and small paper editions. Delamarche increased the total number of maps in the atlas, which he published throughout the 1790s. [Amsterdam,: François L'Honoré & Compagnie Libraries,, 1719].. 440 by 520mm. (17.25 by 20.5 inches).. Engraved map. Henri Chatelain's edition of Adrien Reland's important map of Japan 1715, including the place-names in phonetic Dutch. Reland's map of Japan represents a radical departure from prior European maps of Japan, and is the first map printed in Japan to use Sino-Japanese characters. Instead of using the existing European geographical sources of Japan, Reland utilized Japanese maps, most notably a map from the library of Benjamin Dutry (1668-1751), a former director of the Dutch VOC. This was a tremendous leap forward in the geographical depiction of Japan, such as in the treatment of Kyushu Island and in naming the 66 provinces. Large inset of the area around Nagasaki and an ornate dedication cartouche, with about twenty coats of arms. Published in the fifth volume of the Châtelain family's 'Atlas historique, ou Nouvelle introduction à l'Histoire, à la Chronologie & à la Géographie… Read More

Milan,: La Zincografia,, [c1915].. 250 by 345mm. (9.75 by 13.5 inches).. Lithograph map. A propaganda sheet attacking the Austro-Hungarian Empire, showing it as an octopus with its tentacles wrapped around the various territories it had absorbed, including the former Italian regions of Trentino and Istria. Although Italy had joined the Entente powers against Germany and Austria in May 1915, public opinion was still divided. Not only did the Socialist parties oppose the war, but the Italian government also had existing diplomatic grievances with both Britain and France.

[Venice,: Stefano Scolari,, 1629].. image: 390 by 2069mm (15.25 by 81.5 inches). Sheet: 427 by 2150mm (16.75 by 84.75 inches).. Copper engraving, printed on four sheets, joined, a few small tears, and some areas of loss skillfully reinstated in facsimile. Stefano Scolari's rare and stunning panorama of London, showing the city before the Great Fire, extending from Whitehall to St Katherine-by-the-Tower. Scolari's print is based on an example by Nicolas Visscher printed in 1616, which was often used as a starting point for pre-Fire panoramas. Ralph Hyde identifies Scolari's print as a later variant of Franco Vallegio's interpretation of Visscher's panorama, with the plate considerably reworked. It is rare to see a surviving panorama from this period: their size, and the fact that they were normally issued without wrappers, made them particularly vulnerable. Although Scolari reworked the skyline, he retained the decoration in the sky. The title is held on a banderole by two angels, with two figures… Read More

The first, by Pedro Cieza de León (1520-1554) is the work he wrote after returning from the New World, 'La Prima Parte dell'historie del Peru', first published in 1553. Cieza de Leon had become a conquistador after seeing Hernanda Pizarro return from the Indies laden with treasure as a boy, and participated in several campaigns in present-day Colombia and Lima. He was the first historian to write a global history of the Andes. His work describes military campaigns against rebellious natives, expeditions to make contacts with remote rulers supposedly possessed of enormous wealth, and the everyday hardships of life in South America. Amsterdam,: Jacob Robijn,, 1690.. Folio (450 by 280mm), title, privilege, [2]p. description of the earth, 67pp., 34 engraved charts (all double-page apart from the chart of Catalina), seventeenth century Spanish pig skin. One of the most important maritime atlases of the Dutch Golden Age. Roggeveen's work is the first maritime atlas of the American coasts, and was based largely on the closely guarded collection of mostly Iberian manuscript nautical charts owned by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and West India Company (WIC). It covers what it calls the West Indies, a term then interpreted much more broadly than today, including not only the entire Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico and Central America, but also part of South America and the entire east coast of what is now the United States and southern Canada. Arent Roggeveen (c.1628-1779) was born in Delfshaven, and came to Middelburg as a teacher in 1658. Familiar with mathematics and land-surveying and interested in astronomy, he quickly… Read More

[Rome and Venice respectively,, 1561].. 495 by 795mm. (19.5 by 31.25 inches). 450 by 780mm (17.75 by 30.75 inches). Pair of engraved maps, each on two sheets joined, watermark of ladder in shield under six-pointed star (Woodward 253), to all four sheets. Fine examples of the most influential sixteenth century maps of Central Asia and the Middle East, by Giacomo Gastaldi, the greatest cartographer of his era. Not only are these works the most accurate depiction of the area to date, but would go on to dominate the European view of the area for the rest of the sixteenth century. Giacomo Gastaldi (c1500-1567), originally from Piedmont, established himself as a cartographer in Venice, where he was given the notable title of 'Cosmographer to the Republic'. He was a prolific mapmaker, with a body of work numbering at least 109 pieces, including contributions to the 1548 Venice edition of Ptolemy's 'Geogra a', and Ramusio's 'Navigationi et viaggi'. Venetia,: Paolo Forlani,, 1566.. 272 by 355mm. (10.75 by 14 inches).. Double-page engraved map. Printed from a possible discarded first issue plate, with the date in the title cartouche in Roman numerals, rather than Arabic, and with the line break after 'esatta' in the title. An unusual map showing the coast of the Holy Land with Cyprus, and the Levant coast to the south of the Dead Sea, engraved and published by Paolo Forlani. The map is based on Martin Waldseemüller's cartography in the 1513 edition of Ptolemy's 'Geographia': Forlani probably saw Giordano Ziletti's edition published in Venice in 1561, enlarged it and added the decorative title cartouche and the wind rose. The variant with Arabic numerals appears in two states, the second published by Donato Bertelli. There are institutional examples in the Danish National Library, Leiden University Library, National Library of Israel and the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Navigable chart of the, present-day, Sulu Archipelago, northeast of Borneo, with two smaller inset charts of """"Sooloo Road"""" and """"Toolyan Bay"""" by James Rennel. As early as April 1766, Dalrymple had approached the EIC with the idea of issuing a series of uniform charts of Borneo, Palawan, Mindanao, and Sulu, that would help to promote his plan of creating a trading settlement on the island of Balambangan. The charts would be based on his own observations made during his two voyages to the area. In 1769 the EIC issued Dalrymple with a grant to support his project, which resulted in 'A collection of Charts and Memoirs' (1772). """"Graduated & Engraved by B. Henry. The Hills Etched by D. [c.1861].. 240 by 600mm (9.5 by 23.5 inches).. Watercolour on paper. The first modern bridge at Lambeth was a suspension bridge, designed by Peter W. Barlow. Sanctioned by an Act of Parliament in 1860, it opened as a toll bridge in 1862, but doubts about its safety, coupled with its awkwardly steep approaches deterring horse-drawn traffic, meant it soon became used almost solely as a pedestrian crossing. It ceased to be a toll bridge in 1879 when the Metropolitan Board of Works assumed responsibility for its upkeep – it was by then severely corroded, and by 1910 it was closed to vehicular traffic.

[London],: to be solde by Roger Rea ye Elder and younger at ye Golden Crosse in Cornhill against the Exchange,, 1665.. 410 by 550mm. (16.25 by 21.75 inches).. Double-page engraved map, upper left and right margins skilfully repaired, margins reinforced with japan paper. The map bears the imprint of Roger Rea the Elder and Younger. The Reas had purchased the rights to Speed's work from William Garrett in 1659, who had previously purchased them from the widow of William Humble in the same year. Skelton suggests that the father and son intended a new edition of the atlas for the Restoration of 1660. However, the atlas would appear not to have been published until 1665. This is borne out by an advertisement in the Term Catalogue by the subsequent owners of the plates, Thomas Bassett and Richard Chiswell, in 1675: "Mr John Speed's... Geography of the Kingdoms of England, Scotland, and Ireland... together with his Prospect... all in one entire Volume, hath been, for seven Years past, out of Print, the… Read More
