Toned and gently shaken, front hinge starting, a few nicks to edges and dog-eared pages, off-setting to pp. 90-1 from item now removed. Else, clean. A good copy of an early C20th erotic "sequel". Jisc LSD lists only two holdings in the UK: UoCambridge and UoNottingham (part of the George Lazarus bequest). Roberts and Poplawski Appendix I, A:VI William Faro, Inc. was the short-lived trade imprint of infamous American publisher Samuel Roth (1893-1974), who established the company in 1930 and issued books through 1934, with the firm going bankrupt in 1933. Alongside its Ardent Classics and Modern Amatory Classics reprint series, Faro published sequels to its successful pirated editions of Lady Chatterley's Lover. London: Collins, 1931. Cloth. Good+. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR. 8vo. Original yellow cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Lean to spine, extremities bruised, sunned and soiled. Endpapers and half-title browned and spotted, inscribed in year of publication by Farjeon in sepia pen to ffep: "To dear Maggie/ with Eleanor's Love/ April, 1931" and below in a slighter hand, also in sepia ink: "Bertha Hagart./ July 1956", hinges cracked. Good+ It seems likely that Bertha Hagart (later Rose) was the Royal Academy of Music (RAM)-trained, South African pianist, who was active professionally both in South Africa and Britain in the 1950s. If this is the case, it also seems probable that Hagart and Farjeon met through the author's elder brother Harry, who taught at RAM for 45 years. Maggie, sadly, remains unidentified.

Original beige wrappers, lettered in red. Wrappers gently used, pushing to spine ends, corners creased and dog-eared, else, clean and tidy. A pleasing copy of a pamphlet that provides a glimpse into colonial missionary leisure activities and the construction of racial difference. Unusual both in the trade (despite it having been reprinted at least four times, and as late as 1964) and in British and Irish research libraries: Jisc LHD lists only six copies (BL, UoBirmingham, Bodleian, NLS, NLW/LGC & TCD). A theatrical guide aimed at Missionary Society members, advising on the correct way to wear and create "overseas costumes" for performances, with each Missionary Society, it tells us, having a Costumes department.
