Apud Elzevirios, Lugd. Batav. (Elzevier, Leiden): 1638., 1638 pp. (8), 336, (8) + Title engraved by Duysend. 24mo. [129 x 73 mm.] Lightly damp stained. Later full dark brown morocco gilt binding. Florus was said to have addressed the well-known lines to Hadrian beginning, "Ego nolo Caesar esse" [I do not wish to be a Caesar], which provoked Hadrian's satirical parody, "I do not wish to be a Florus," quoted by Spartianus. This important edition was edited by the great "monarch and tyrant of literature", Claude Salmasius (1593?-1653). The Dutch family of Elzevier (Elzevir; Elsevier) were the foremost printers of their time. They produced a vast variety of well printed scholarly and popular books; many in a…

Jean Elzevier, Lugundum Batavorum (Leiden): 1658., 1658 417p.+ Engraved title. No blanks. Small 24mo. [125 x 72 mm.] Old worming in last two gatherings, with slight loss. Plain vellum. Lucan was born in Córdoba, Spain, nephew of the Roman philosopher Senec a. At first in Nero's favor, he was later forced to kill himself when his part in a plot against the emperor was discovered. Ten books of his epic Bellum Civile (on the civil war between Caesar and Pompey), erroneously called Pharsalia, survive. Though the poem is written in a severe style and is often digressive and extravagant, it has a kind of vigorous beauty and grandeur which gave Lucan a hig h place in the esteem of later writers. This translation into French by Mr. De Breboeuf was first published in 1655, by Sommaville, Paris. First Elzevier edition. The Dutch family of Elzevier (Elzevir; Elsevier) were the foremost printers of their time. They produced a vast variety of well printed scholarly and popular books; many in a very…

(de l'Impimerie de Le Breton, Premier Imprimeur ordinaire du Roi) Chez Merlin, A Paris, ., 1766 Two volumes. I. [1], LXXIX, 304. II. [1], 415, [1](Errata), [4](Approbation) + Eleven (11) engraved plates. French text. 8vo. 200 mm. Edges decorated red. Some age stain and foxing. Original decoratively mottled full leather bindings. Spines worn, but some gilt remains. Marcus Annaeus Lucanus (39-65 CE), was an important Roman poet, born in Cordoba. One of the outstanding figures of the Imperial Latin period, his youth and speed of composition set him apart from others. The Pharsalia is an epic poem on the Roman Civil War. It is considered the greatest epic in Latin after the Aeneid. It depicts the Battle of Pharsalus (48 BC) where Julius Caesar defeated Pompey. Lucan's poetic talent apparently aroused the jealously of the Emperor Nero. After the publication of Pharsalia the Emperor forbade him to write, or even plead in the courts, and then later compelled him to commit suicide for alleged treason.…
