Description:
Paris, France: Librairie Hachette, 1874. Very Good in the publisher's pebbled black cloth with a black leather backstrip. The spine is decoratively gold-tooled; the front and rear boards in blind. Raised bands on the spine. All page-edges gilt. White moire silk endpapers. [iv], 360pps., with numerous woodcut illustrations and a fold-out map of Cote Occidentale du Groenland. First French Edition. There is moderate rubbing wear to the board-edges, particularly to the tips and, less significantly, in the area of the joints. Internally, there is only light foxing: most of this is in the area of the endpapers. A small, previous owner's blindstamp is impressed on the title-page and there is a label (Libreria Nacional Sevilla-Madrid) affixed to the upper corner of the second fep. The map has a 1" closed tear. Otherwise clean, bright, and tightly bound. A narrative of a ship's expedition along the coast of Greenland. Purchase with confidence: all books, gradings, and descriptions are rendered… Read More

New York: Viking, 1940. Very Good in the publisher's mustard yellow cloth. Both the spine and the front board are stamped in blue. Blue topstain. 301pps. No dustjacket. This copy is the quite scarce first printing (March, 1940), first-issue, with pages 165 and 256 transposed (page 165: '.A voice said.'). There is light soiling and sunning to the cloth with rubbing wear to the tips and the spine-ends. Also, there is browning to the pastedowns -- particuarly at the gutters -- due to the binder's glue. Otherwise clean, tight, square, and bright. The text is in excellent condition. No previous ownership markings. Originally published in England as 'The Power and The Glory'.

"...Mr. Tench went out to look for his ether cylinder: out into the blazing Mexican sun and the bleaching dust.
