Description:
Chicago and London: The University of Chicago Press, 1979. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. Presentation copy, inscribed by Evangelina Enriquez on the front flyleaf. Pioneering study of a marginal group in society, neither fully Mexican or American, who suffer under triple oppression: as women, as members of a colonized culture, and as victims of a cultural heritage dominated by the cult of machismo. Tracing the role of Chicanas from pre-Columbian society to the present, the authors reveal the antecedents and roots of contemporary cultural expectations in Aztec, colonial, and revolutionary Mexican historical periods. A discussion of the contribution of modern Chicanas to their community and to feminism and a look at literary stereotypes and the emergence of Chicana literature to counter them round out this work, which remains required reading in academia. 283 p. with textual photographs. Original tan cloth binding, with black titles. Some light rubbing to the dust jacket. Better than… Read more

Description:
Firenze: Leo S. Olschki Editore, 2001. First edition. Trade Paperback. Fine. Studi e testi per la storia della tolleranza in Europa nei secoli XVI-XVIII, 5. Three volumes. Color frontispiece portrait. "Rather than a clear cut overall vision of tolerance this work proposes important research of its progressive growth intended as a slow historical formation of alterity in which one of the greatest distinguishing moral features of modern man is defined. Given the complexity and the duration of the historical process examined space has been given to collateral themes to the debate on tolerance such as universalistic concepts of religion, irenic trends, awareness of non European civilisations, the struggles for freedom of conscience." Text in Italian. Original printed cream paper wrappers, with matching dust jackets. A fine set, housed in the publisher's slipcase.

Description:
Very good. A small collection of photographs and other material associated with Lake Gregory Dam and nearby Crestline, California during the 1930s. Lake Gregory is a man-made lake in Crestline, an unincorporated community in San Bernardino County. It was created in the late 1930s by Redlands citrus grower Arthur Gregory who bought and developed the land, originally known as Houston Flat, with the intention of creating a small resort community from the waters of Houston Creek that previously drained into the tributaries of the Mojave River. The nearly 100-foot-high dam was built to protect the lake, which remains a popular recreation area for nearby residents and visitors. Recently, seismic upgrade work was completed on the dam at a cost of $24.6 million. This collection includes seven images of Lake Gregory, including three duplicates. Two are dated September 8, 1937 and show the dam under construction. These photographs are accompanied by a Western Union telegram dated February 27, 1932 and… Read more

Description:
Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1903. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. This paean to the high California desert consists of fourteen sketches based on personal observation following solitary sojourns tramping through desert trails and "the streets of the mountains." Mary Austin (1868-1934), naturalist, feminist, mystic, and poet, wrote thirty-five books and hundreds of articles during her lifetime, but The Land of Little Rain, her first book, is regarded as her masterpiece. Her nature writings have been compared to those of John Muir, John Burroughs, and Henry David Thoreau. Living in the little town of Independence, Inyo County, she, more than anyone, succeeded in conveying the beauty of this simultaneously forbidding yet magnetic landscape with its hardy mixture of plants, animals, and human beings. Lawrence Clark Powell summed up the beauty of her words, writing: "With her feet on earth and her head in the sky, she gave voice in singing prose to the soul of a hitherto… Read more
