Superb LEC production of the second title in their 23rd series. One of the few LEC titles printed dos-a-dos, "L'Allegro" (The Happy Man) contains notes on the poems by W.P. Trent, while "Il Penserosa" (The Melancholy Man) contains notes on the Blake paintings by Chauncey Brewster Tinker. Rear colophon notes limitation of 1780 numbered copies (this #241) instead of their usual 1,500. Laid in are the "Monthly Letter" and the publisher's announcement card for this title. NEWMAN 264.

Tight, clean, handsome first edition of this facsimile reprint of the rare 1708 Venetian first edition of this important treatise on harmonies by the Italian composer (1668-1727). Even this facsimile edition is fairly uncommon. From the collection of musicologist and conductor Paul Clinton Echols (1944-94).

A lovely example of this charmer, a color closeup of "Gibson Girl" type at left, hands folded in anticipation under chin, and dashing young man in tuxedo and white gloves, index finger nervously touching his lips as if about to speak. "The PCK Series" printed on verso. Addressed, penny stamp cancelled in Camp Douglas, Wisconsin on 30 July 1908.

Paris: Le Charivari, 1869. Lithograph. Small 4to (image size 8¼" X 10"). Very good. Light, even age toning. This is the May 3, 1869 second state of Plate 73 in this illustrated newspaper's "Actualites" series, and a strong clean impression. It depicts a statuesque crowned woman, representing France and resembling our Statue of Liberty, standing at right atop a scale with a measuring pole. Her right hand rests across her bosom and her left hand clutches the adjustable height bar near the top of the measuring pole. Behind her and at left stand a crowd of Frenchmen in suits and ties, all staring apprehensively at her. The caption reads, in translation, "France preparing to get her candidates to pass muster under the measure of standards." Immediately below the plate, at lower left, is printed "A. de Vresse, r.Rivoli, 55" while at lower right is printed "Lith. Destouches, r. Portfolio edgeworn and rubbed, with 3½" chip at tail of spine expertly, archivally, discreetly replaced with matching cloth and inner joints likewise strengthened with durable book tape -- thus portfolio overall tight and handleable; plates occasionally a bit edgeworn, with a few lightly soiled. A nice, and complete set of these lovely detailed architectural plates -- "Premiere Serie" -- compiled by this Italian librarian/historian/writer (1855-1925) who served as director of the Medicean Laurentian Library in Florence, among many other distinguished posts. Despite restored portfolio spine a handsome set, with all photographic plates bold and lovely.
