Description:
Lawrence is best known as "Lawrence of Arabia," a leader of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire (1917-18) which he described in "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom (1926)." Typed Letter Signed, 4to, on stamped "R.A.F. Mount Batten, Plymouth," stationery, Nov. 7, 1930 and signed as "T. E. Shaw. " He used the last name of Shaw from 1927 in acknowledgment of his friendship with playwright George Bernard Shaw. Lawrence writes to the doctor of George Bernard Shaw's wife, Charlotte. Her doctor, William Cooper, took care of Lawrence's broken wrist. In this upbeat letter with a literary reference to American author Henry James, Lawrence gives an update on Charlotte as well as his own injured wrist. At the end, he asks for the cost of the bill which he supposes Charlotte would have paid had she not become indisposed from an accident. In part, "and then the fun began.... I was going to write just after the occasion; only I was detracted suddenly by the accident to Mrs. Shaw...she is not so long or quite… Read More

Description:
LUMIÈRE, LOUIS & AUGUSTE. The First Film Makers. Two AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED. The Lumiere brothers are credited with making the first movie shown in December 1895 and titled, "La Sortie des ouvriers de l'usine Lumière" or "Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory." As manufacturers of photographic equipment, and interested in animating images, they developed a camera that could both animate and project images. Their camera, called the Cinématographe, gave us the name for moving pictures as well as the theaters that show them, the cinema. They apparently incorrectly judged cinema to have little future value and focused their efforts on developing a color process for photographs. In the year between these letters, 1907, the brothers launched Autochrome Lumière, their color photographic process. The recipient of the Lumiere brothers' letters was Angelo Mariani (1838-1914), a French chemist. Between 1863 and 1868, Mariani marketed a coca wine and a medicine called Vin Tonique Mariani. His advertisements… Read More

Description:
Ensor signed and dated in pencil, "James Ensor 1888" According to Albert Croquez catalog of Ensor engravings (1947) , the head in the lower left corner is that of Jean Jacques Rousseau's son. The image measures about 2 x 3 inches on a 4to sheet, 4to, From the collection of Augusta Bogaerts, life long friend of Ensor. The artist's name "Ensor'' is written in pencil along the verso imprint. Exceptional in association and fine condition. Augusta Bogaerts (1870-1951) and Ensor had a long perhaps ambiguous relationship. She was 18 when they met in 1888, 10 years younger than the 28 year old artist. In that most creative year, of his 1888, Ensor turned his attention to religious themes incorporating his fascination with macabre masks and skeletons. He produced his "Chimera" etching among many engravings and also started to work on his most important painting "The Entry of Christ into Brussels," completed in 1889, considered "scandalous" at the time. Much later in his life, Ensor portrayed Augusta Bogaerts… Read More

Description:
However I have painted on a picture - I have alluded to the needs of my body...." Hartley writes a long letter to Anne Traubel discussing his loneliness, the nature surrounding him, and his painting. He had a close friendship with Anne and her husband, Horace Traubel (1877-1943), author and biographer of Walt Whitman ("With Walt Whitman in Camden," published 1906). Hartley begins with a comment that her "beautiful letter" arrived "in the silences...It is a beautiful message for any one to deliver, this dark man's message...I sit writing you after having started a picture, done a washing which lies purifying in the sun on the grass. This hermit life which I live - curiously unlike me, does not bring me all the happiness it should..." He continues, "I am free to confess that as yet art has never been more than love and friendship nor has it been less - some would say it has nothing to do with either of them because art is purely intellectual and has little to do with the simple emotion - However I have… Read More

Description:
Linus Pauling sketched his superconductivity invention. SIGNED by Emile Zuckerhandl, biologist. Pauling is generally associated with chemistry, Vitamin C, and peace. He also had a keen interest in superconductors. In our sketch, drawn in 1989, Pauling illustrates his new technique on superconductivity for biologist Emile Zuckerhandl. Zuckerhandl (1922-2013), a founder of molecular evolution, worked with Pauling to develop the molecular clock hypothesis. Writing in pencil, Zuckerhandl described the sketch on the lower right corner of the page. "2/4/89 LP [Linus Pauling] explains to me a new technique he wants to use in his research on superconductivity, to prepare extremely thin metal fibers (lead in gold)." Pauling wrote "Rolling Mill" under his sketch. On his professional stationery, Zuckerhandl wrote an explanation of the drawing for David Schulson who purchased it in 1994. "About Linus Pauling's little sketch, I wrote on it the following words..." The words are the same as the description already… Read More
