There is also a line of script on the front free endpaper:"From Mother and Daddy 1933." The interior is clean and the pages are white, no marking or writing. Published in 1875, this first edition is really more to the Good Plus side with wear to the cloth covered boards at all corners, and the top and the bottom of the spine. The binding is remarkably tight, and the title on the front panel is bright and complete. All pages are present; the interior pages are a mellowed white, the paste downs and free end papers are a little darker. The front paste down has the original owner's book plate and the front free end paper has an inscription from a member of the Ward family to the family of the original owner. The first 15 pages document the life of Samuel Ward's life followed by 5 pages about the Ward family. Benjamin Harvey Hill was a U.S. Representative, U.S. senator and a Confederate senator from the state of Georgia. He also had an unsuccessful run for governor against Joseph E. Brown. Hill was a talented orator, he was the only non Democratic member of the Georgia secession convention (1861) where spoke out against the dissolution of the Union with former opponent, Alexander Stephens. After the Civil War he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He later became a Senator from Georgia and served until his death in 1882. He was a well known spokesman for the South. Ben Hill County is named in his honor. This book is in very good condition: some light loss of color to embossed cloth over boards, with no breaks to the cloth. This book starts with a short history of Texas and proceeds to individuals who were important to the gowth of the state. 463pp.., many illustrations and portraits.
