London: Henry COLBURN, 1818 Two volumes complete, with map, portraits, engravings and tables. Original full leather binding with weak hinges which will need attention in due course. Clean contents, but occasional stains - images on request. Historically important work. Bray produced the first edition of his diaries, which offer a fine contemporary insight to the English Revolutionary period. The diaries include correspondence with key figures, for example Sir Edward Hyde.

Fleetestrete, within Temple Barre, at the Signe of the Hand and Starre, London: Richarde Totteli, 1587 A good to very good copy of Richard Tottel's 1587 publication of Magna Charta with associated statutes. Richard Tottel (spelt in a variety of forms including Tottill and Tottell) was an English publisher specialising in legal publications, for which he was granted a patent in1553. He issued several editions of Magna Charta: this one is similar to his 1576 publication but appears to be longer (by 3 pp). The publication is in Latin, French and English. This copy is bound in full leather, retaining the contemporary boards and adding a new plain spine with raised bands. The old title label has been remounted. Internally there is an armorial bookplate of Thomas Dawson to the front pastedown. The old endpapers have been retained with repair at the joints. London: Methuen & Co. Ltd., 1917 A good copy of the rare 1st edition, which marks the first appearance of Bertie Wooster. In the original light red cloth binding which has been expertly rebacked and is sound and tight. The cloth on the spine is faded and browned. The boards have some light marking (more obvious on the back board) with some scuffing. Internally new endpapers have been added. Contents are complete as per McIlvaine A21a. There is persistent spotting, particularly to page edges and margins. Spotting visible at the foredge. The publisher's listing at the rear is very browned. London and New York : Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1897 A very good copy of the first Macmillan edition with Hugh Thomson illustrations. In the original red decorative cloth binding with gilt page edges and decorative yellow endpapers. The binding has intricate gilt decoration to the spine and front board which was designed by Turbayne. It is in very good clean condition. The front board is very bright with some turning to corners. There is some pulling to spine ends and some scuffing on the pulled areas. The back board is bright with some turning to the bottom corner. All page edges gilted. The decorative endpapers are clean - there is slight spotting on the rear endpapers. Contents are complete, clean and in near fine condition. The tissue guard to the frontispiece is browned and looks to have offset to the title which also has some browning. There is a small crease to the corner tip of p 97/8 and a slight brown mark at the bottom edge of the gutter on p 362/3.

London : J M Dent & Co, 1902 A good set in the original decorative cloth bindings, edited by R Brimley Johnson, and with 12 colour plates by H M Brock. 3rd edition thus. The bindings have gilt titles to spine and front board. The top page edges are gilt; the remaining edges are uncut. With half titles, showing that they were volumes V and VI of Brimley Johnson's series; colour frontispieces; decorative title pages; listing of illustrations; and text with head and tailpieces. Volume I has a preface. Vol I 245pp; Vol II 249pp. All the plates are present as called for. Both volumes have some fading to the blue decoration with some browning to board edges and spines. Corners are turned. Both have been rebacked relaying the original spines and are sound and tight. The original decorative endpapers are present, with professional repair at the joints. London: Richard Bentley, 1856 A good copy of the 1856 reprint of the Bentley edition of Mansfield Park in the original brown decorative cloth binding. Mansfield Park was first reprinted by Bentley as part of his Standard Novels series in 1833. This reissue retains the original frontispiece but without the vignette title. The cloth binding has blind stamped decoration to boards and a flowing gilt design around titles to the spine. It is rare to find one of these novels in the original cloth. The binding is a little shaken with some pulling at the top and bottom of the spine which is cocked towards the front. It is bright and clean. The corners are slightly bumped. Contents with signature to front endpaper; frontispiece; title page; text 424pp. There are browned sections to pp 24 and 25 where a newspaper clipping about the Suez crisis was used as a bookmark. The binding has false raised bands to spine with gilt decoration and titles. It is in very good clean condition, with some scuffing and wear to the spine and to edges. The bottom corners are lightly bumped. Marbled endpapers. Contents in very good clean condition. There is some spotting to preliminaries and to pp 395/6 and the reverse of the rear endpaper.

The illustrations, with Thomson's acute attention to detail, are a perfect complement to Austen's writing. The binding has gilt titles and decoration with small raised bands to spine and marbled boards and endpapers. Top page edges gilt. The binding is sound and clean with some fading to the spine. It has wear to spine joints and rubbing to the raised bands on the spine.There is wear to spine ends and to corners with a bump to the bottom corner of the back board. LONDON : John Van Voorst, 1856 A VG copy of the first edition in the original blind stamped decorative cloth binding with gilt titles to spine. With colour printed fold out frontispiece, 5 further colour plates and one plain plate as called for. The Revd Tugwell unashamedly addressed this work to 'the amateur rambler about our English coasts' and provides an account in plain language for the rambler to follow. The result is a charming example of victorian natural history - written to encourage the reader to understand nature better. With a listing of locations at the rear. The binding and the original endpapers are in very good clean condition with only a very slight marking to the top of the boards. The contents are also very clean and bright. The reverse of the plates have shadows of the plate images but there is little offsetting to the text. Small light book, please enquire if you would like us to assess postage at cost.

London: Printed for J Jenkins by L Harrison and J C Leigh, 1815 A very good copy, complete with hand coloured vignette title, hand coloured title, hand coloured dedication to the Duke of Wellington, and 51 further hand coloured aquatints. The text paper is water marked 1812; the plate watermark is generally in the gutter but is 1835 for the ones that can be distinguished. This copy has been recently rebound in half leather with marbled boards; spine with title label and raised banding with gilt ruled lines. New endpapers. The pages have not been trimmed, so some edges are quite rough and browned. There is a signature to the initial blank. Westminster : Archibald Constable & Co, 1895 A very good copy in the original decorative cloth binding with full page illustrations, decorative initials, tailpieces and vignettes by Arthur Layard. Scarce and based on an original manuscript which surfaced in Paris in 1357. The binding has very bright boards and a slightly faded spine. The spine has pulling to the ends. The bottom corner of the front board is turned - the back bottom corner has a bump. Internally the front endpapers have a split at the joint. There is an inscription dated 1895 to the verso of the fep. The contents are complete and very clean with a large number of pages unopened. There is light spotting to the verso of the fep and the initial blank, and some spotting to the final leaf and recto of the rep. Top page edges are gilted and the side edges are slightly roughly cut with some spotting at the foredge occasionally visible in side margins.

London : Printed by Stewart and Murray, 1839 A fair copy in the original cloth binding. A scarce work. The binding has wear and the cloth is splitting across the spine and at the spine joints - particularly the rear joint. The spine is cocked to the front with pulling to spine ends. Corners turned. There is some marking on both boards. Endpapers are a little grubby and there are some old pricing figures on the front pastedown. Contents are complete with toning to paper and the occasional grubby mark. There is a light brown stain in the top margin into the gutter affecting pp 15-39 - at its worst it strays into the 2nd line of text - but does not affect readability.

PARIS : L Hachette, 1837 A VG copy in 2 volumes. In half leather binding with gilt compartments, title labels and gilt numerals to spine, and marbled boards. Boards, endpapers and page edges marbled. Vol I 368pp plus errata; Vol II 366pp plus errata. Bindings have a little wear to edges, including the top and bottom of the spine, and corners. Contents clean with light foxing and browning at the beginning and end of both volumes and occasional light spotting elsewhere.

London: Printed by Joseph Streater, for sale by T Basset, J Robinson, B Aylmer, Joh Southby And W Canning, 1688 A very good copy of this important work on comparative anatomy with engraved title; rubricated title and 30 plates. The original publication had 2 separate parts, both complete in themselves - the second section 'The Measure of the Earth' translated by Richard Waller, is not present. Alexander Pitfeild undertook to translate this work, originally led by Charles Perrault for the Royal Academy of Sciences in Paris. Animals, mostly from the royal menageries at Vincennes and Versailles, were supplied to the Royal Academy, for detailed study and dissection. The first publication including 13 species, appeared in 1671 with a second volume 5 years later. The publications had very short print runs and were very expensive being elephant folio with detailed art work mainly by Sebastien Leclerc. London : Benjamin Tooke, 1699 A fair copy of the 3rd edition of this scarce work, first published in French in 1696. With frontispiece, folding map, 2 folding plates, 1 single page plate, a folding table and an illustration in the text. Louis le Comte was Jesuit mathematician, sent to China as part of a Jesuit mission at the behest of Louis XIV. He mainly worked in Shansi, and, after his recall to Paris, published an account of his experience in the form of 8 letters. The work provoked controversy and debate about Chinese Rites. This copy has been rebound by Bath Municipal Reference Library. The cloth binding has gilt titles, date and reference numbers to the spine. It is in very good condition. The endpapers have a Bath reference library bookplate to the fep with reference numbers to the top. There are no other library markings. The endpaper joints have been reinforced. Middelburgh: Jacques Fierens, Boeck-verkooper, inde Globe, 1662 A rare 1st edition copy of the first part of Johannes Goedaert's 3 part work on the development and metamorphosis of insects. This copy lacks the decorative title page but is otherwise complete with 63 pages of hand coloured plates. It has been collated against the 1662 copy held by the Getty Research Institute Library and matches apart from having 5 letters to the tie 5 pages from the Encomium - Getty has 3 letters. Goedaert (1617-1668) was born and lived in Middelburgh and was a painter and a naturalist - being one of the earliest to study entomology. His 3 part Metamorphosis (parts 2 and 3 published in 1667 and 1669) was the product of extensive fieldwork to collect live specimens, and detailed observation and recording of how they developed. The work was ground breaking and quickly translated from the original Dutch into French and Latin. This copy is newer brown cloth with title label and publication note in gilt. First published with Rackham illustrations in 1908, the work proved extremely popular and there were numerous reprints. The binding has nice bright boards. There is a very small mark on the front board. The spine is a little faded and marked. There is a little pulling to the spine and slight bumping to board corners. There is part of a wrapper for Midsummer Night's Dream loose inside the book but it looks slightly too small to have been the original wrapper for this book. There is a small ink inscription - Christmas 1935. To Peter with much love from Lorna' at the bottom of the fep. In the original green cloth binding with a cricketing scenes on the front board and spine. The binding is sound and clean with some pulling and fraying at the spine ends, particularly the top. Corners with light wear. The endpapers have a pencil signature to the fep, which has a couple of light marks. Contents are generally clean with the occasional light mark (mainly in margins) or light area of spotting. Some of the plates have light marking in the margin or to the verso, and roughness to the side edge. A small side edge tear at p 3 has been repaired. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood & Sons A very good copy in contemporary half leather binding with marbled boards and endpapers. Undated but early 1880's. With vignette title page (stating that this is Vol 2 in their new issue of George Eliot's works), second title page, contents list, illustrations list, list of works of George Eliot and text with 6 black and white plates. The binding has raised bands and gilt titles and decoration to spine. It has light wear to edges, including spine bands and corners, and there is some scuffing to the base of the spine. Contents in very good clean condition.

The Hague: Petrum van Cleef, 1766 A good to very good copy of the first edition of this extremely rare work by the naturalist Peter Simon Pallas (1741-1811). This is one of his earliest works, drawing on collections in Dutch museums. It includes several vertebrates which were at that time unknown to science. Complete with 14 detailed and beautifully executed folding black and white plates drawn by the Dutch artist J J Bylaert, and decorative head and tailpieces. With title page with engraving of an owl, dedication, preface, text and corrigenda (244 pp), and folding plates. The binding is of worn but sound marbled boards with red label to spine (possibly contemporary or slightly later and possibly German/Dutch). All page edges red. Internally there is a little ink inscription to the bottom of the fep and occasional pencil annotation. The first plate has some creasing to the outer margin.
