This Second Edition is identical in format to the First Edition, published less than a year earlier, and quite scarce, more so in nice condition, as our. Lilith, a rather extravagant fantasy novel, explores the journey into another world with a librarian who takes the form of a raven. Cloth slightly worn at head & heel of spine and corner tips; a few small marks, spine panel with a slight lean. A very good, tight copy with both inner hinges in tact.

London: Strahan & Co, 1872. First edition. First edition. Original blue cloth with bold gilt design on cover and spine, stamped in gilt and black with pictorial design on cover. First edition, first issue with publisher's name at foot of spine and with crescent moon and flaming torch in gilt outside of the front cover circle. 30 illustrations by Arthur Hughes, all edges gilt. In collector's blue morocco case with decorative gilt spine, previous ownership inscription in ink on front free endpaper, minor spotting and browning, minimal soiling to lower board, spine sunned, bumped. Scarce first edition of MacDonald's second full-length fairy tale. In a letter to his wife in February 1871, Macdonald refers to the book which would be published a few months later: "...I know it is as good a work of the kind as I can do, and I think it will be the most complete thing I have done..." Seldom seen on the market today, the book was widely handled by children and rarely seen in presentable condition.

London: Smith, Elder & Co, 1858. First edition. First edition. 8vo. 323pp. Original blind-stamped olive green cloth. The first edition of George MacDonald's first story to be published in book form. A fine copy in its original state, finely blind-stamped olive cloth with diamond shaped central blossoms and petal motif, elaborate borders on both covers, spine with gilt stamped leaf emblem and lettering, original yellow endpapers. MacDonald's faerie romance was aimed at an adult audience. The similarities between MacDonald and Lewis Carroll, who published Alice in Wonderland eight years later abound, culminating with Carroll asking MacDonald and his wife to read the draft of Alice. About as fine a copy as ever seen by this enduring and important classic. The copy of Sir Charles Oman (inscribed) ,noted military historian, and later, John Sparrow, English academic and book collector, both bookplates appear at front. In superb custom made chemise and green morocco-backed slipcase.

First issue with half-title, and superb woodcut illustrations by Arthur Hughes throughout. 13 pp. of advertisements at end. AEG. In nice collector's folding box. Rear cover neatly detached, otherwise a very nice copy, text block starting, minor browning and spotting, minor soiling to covers, a book rarely found in exemplary condition. . No priority is known regarding tan versus green cloth.

Three large original pen and black ink elaborate border designs for Macdougall's celebrated, "The Book of Ruth," executed in 1896, heightened with white, traces of graphite, two signed lower right, one dated '96, on thick wove paper and artist's board, each sheet approx. 475 x 360 mm. (18 3/4 x 14 1/4 in), with image size 10 x 11 1/2". Some pencil annotations as instructions to printer. Occasional spotting and light browning, surface dirt, unframed, circa 1896, (3). The book was issued later in 1896 by J. M. Dent, fully illustrated by Macdougall. "This book is filled with exquisite decorations. Patterns of great beauty flow around the pages, and testify to the power of invention possessed by the illustrator." [The Spectator, review of the Dent & Co. first edition of "The Book of Ruth", 19th December 1896, p. 24] A most rare and important example of what can only be termed the height of English Art Nouveau book design.

Printed in red and black throughout with 22 woodcut illustrations from de Worde's 1498 folio edition, considered the first text illustrations made from engravings. Only a limited number of these were issued in the full red pigskin bindings. With the original four page prospectus printed in red and black as well as an order form, laid-in. A fine set, rarely seen thus.

Art et Medicine was a ground-breaking, high-quality journal of photographs and essays on art and society, combined with medical and pharmaceutical advertisements, published in France during the 1930s, and featuring heliogravures by Andre Kertesz, Germaine Krull, Andre Brassao, and Man Ray, among many other well-known photographers of the day. Offered here is a wonderfully crafted and illustrated MANUSCRIPT BOOK by Hildegard Hudemann in 1948 (on title page), which has been bound in three quarter beige buckram, orange paper-covered stiff boards (beveled). The illustrations are of a very high quality and craftmanship: color title-page vignette and 10 superb color vignettes interspersed in the text. 17 pages of hand-calligraphed text, with hand-watercolored borders, paragraph initials in red, all by Hudemann... i.e. the entire book is hand-produced. Hudemann is best known in her homeland Germany where several of the children''s historical, geographical picture books that she both wrote and illustrated in the 1970s and `80s have been published. This work does not appear to have been published anywhere and may have been created as a gift or proposal for publication. Fine.

Contemporary gray marbled boards, modern three quarter polished calf, morocco gilt label on spine. Illustrations by John Thurston and one by Dodd. A scarce poem by George Marshall: frontispiece, engraved dedication leaf and a further ten plates. Engravings are by Allen Robert Branston, White, Charlton Nesbit, Luke Clennell, Armstrong and Thomas Bewick after John Thurston and Dodd 'A View of the Cape of Goodhope' plate is from an engraving by Bewick after Thurston. A nice copy with large margins, some age-toned brown-toning, frontis with corner foxing likely from moisture. Corners bumped and sl. worn.

John Marston, father of Philip Bourke Marston (1819-1890), was a noted author and critic of the mid to late 19th Century and regularly contributed to poetical criticism to the "Athenaeum." This, his fourth book, Marston dedicated to Charles Dickens (two page introduction). A very nice copy with slight wear to top and bottom of spine, near fine otherwise.

Superbly illustrated by Humphrey with 24 full color illustrations on heavy paper, printed on one side only. A superb copy, corner and side wear, top of spine, but hinges completely in tact and all of the illustrations clean and bright.

Original pebbled green cloth with superb gilt decorations and lettering on front cover. Six exquisite full page PROOF engravings, mounted onto thick art paper. An amazingly nice copy with bright gilt on cover; substantially well-preserved internally considering age and size. The Dowie Dens o Yarrow", also known as "The Braes of Yarrow" or simply "Yarrow", is a Scottish border ballad (Roud 13, Child 214). It has many variants (Child collected at least 19) and it has been printed as a broadside, as well as published in song collections. It is considered to be a folk standard, and many different singers have performed and recorded it.

A striking, large poster by Blanche McManus (1865-1935), acclaimed for her turn-of-the century creative Art Nouveau book covers, illustrations and posters, featuring the book "Crowns of Promise," published in 1895, and containing her own illustrations. The chromolithograph poster features an angel holding a sprig of white lilies, propped up against a stone wall. Very slightly lightly toned, fold to one corner, short closed tears.

A very large, stunning and bold two-color woodcut poster printed in black and yellow, advertising the publication of Helene A. Guerber's book entitled, "Legends of the Rhine," by Blanche McManus (1869 ñ 1935). MacManus studied art in Chicago, London and Paris, and is acclaimed for her turn-of-the century creative Art Nouveau book covers, illustrations and posters. This enchanting poster is dominated by a large female figure in a flowing yellow gown playing the harp, and the text is set off by wonderful wavy black lines. A few closed tears, chipped corners, slightly toned, mounted on linen and matted. In all, very good condition.

A wonderfully colorful and Nouveau-style poster by Blanche McManus (1865-1935), acclaimed for her turn-of-the century creative Art Nouveau book covers, illustrations and posters, advertising the book, "Flotsam," by Henry Seton Merriman, New York: J.E. Rhodes, [1896] with a chromolithographic floral border in green, white, and red. Near fine.

With eight color moveables by Meggendorfer. Pages need re-hinging and mechanisms of most moveables need repair. Still a rare Meggendorfer title, and would do well with appropriate repair.

Fabulously illustrated by Meggendorfer with six color lithographed moveable plates and eight black and white in-text drawings. Occasional minor soiling, corners slightly bumped, hinges tender, lacking free endpapers, pastedowns. A rare survival, with the movable plates all in good working order.
